What Is A Dressy Suit

Dressy suits for men and women.

Forget feeling flustered about what to wear for formal occasions. The dressy suit is a classy tailored option when deciding what to wear for an evening event. By definition a dressy suit is an ensemble of matching formal evening wear. Choose a suit that is either two pieces brought together or separates that can still coordinate into one look.

The Nighttime Suit

Men and Women Dress Suits

At first glance, the nighttime suit may appear all too similar to your day suit. After all, it's simply a tailored jacket and pair of pants or a skirt. However, you'll decipher the difference between the suit you'll wear to work from the suit reserved for formal occasions by a few finishing touches such as texture, color, or embellishments.

Gentlemen, does the suit have a sheen to it? Is it white or another color too bold for the office? Ladies, perhaps there's a thick fur collar or beading on the lapels. If these questions yielded a yes, then it is probably a nighttime suit you're looking at.

Day Suit Accessorized For Night

Matching formal wear could merely mean accessorizing your day suit into an evening ensemble. A brooch carefully placed along the lapels, a bow tie and a stiletto heel are all accessories that can transform your day suit into one suitable for a formal occasion. Pairing a bold earrings with red lips and a sleek stiletto heel, might be all that is needed for a female to formalize her day suit.

A dinner shirt or waistcoat -- a vest -- will formalize a suit for a man. When buying a dinner shirt, seek an option with pleats on each side of the buttons and a wing-tip collar allowing for bow ties.

The Dress Suit

Women's dressy suits.

For women, the dress suit is an ensemble of a dress and jacket, such as a well-cut, tailored black dress and a matching jacket. Yet, what makes this suit dressy is that the hemline will generally fall below the knee, hitting the ground or slipping out into a train. Similar to the nighttime suit, this option may have a sheen to the texture or lovely little beads throughout for a fancy formal touch.

Gentlemen will find their dress suit to either be a dinner jacket or tuxedo. Typically white, black or midnight blue, these jackets will carry the finishing touch of a satin lapel or a handkerchief worn in the breast pocket. Trousers without cuffs are preferred for formal attire and it's also exemplary for them to be held up with suspenders or braces.

The Non-matching Dressy Suit

For the creative individual, a dressy suit might already exist in your closet. Remember, by definition a dressy suit is merely "matching evening wear." So, it could be that the pair of dressy black pants in your closet might look stunning with that white tuxedo jacket. Or, maybe your little black dress could be formalized by the metallic jacket already hanging in your wardrobe. When coordinating separates for a complete look, focus on textures and colors. Similar textures work best together; meaning that your black summer pants work with your black summer blazer. Warm tones work best with warm tones -- oranges and yellows -- and cool tones play best with cool tones such as blues and purples.
