Cool Emo Hair Styles

Traditional emo hairstyles are short and black.

The term "emo," which is short for emotional, was created in the 1980s to describe a culture that embraces a specific type of music and dresses to display certain emotions. Some teenagers who relate to the emo lifestyle are going through a rough patch and use the style to express their feelings. Cool emo hairstyles are a major part of the emo look.

Traditional

One cool emo hair style is what the emo culture considers the traditional look. It is a unisex hairstyle, fairly short in the back and longer toward the front. The front consists of heavy bangs that sweep across the forehead and eyes. Spike the ends of the hair in the back and front using a strong hold hair product or a straightening iron. Straighten all your hair if you have wavy or curly hair. If you have straight hair, use a flat iron to achieve pointy ends. Spike the back part of the hair. Achieve this look by spraying the back part of the hair with hairspray while you comb it upwards. Hang your head upside down during the process if you are using a hairspray that takes a little time to dry.

Modified

A less extreme version of the traditional emo hairstyle, but an equally cool option, is the modified emo hairstyle. This hairstyle still has sweeping bang across the front but the bangs are less bulky. A modified emo hairstyle for women is sweeping bangs in the front, noticeable layers throughout the hair, and long hair in the back. The noticeable layers throughout the hair enable you to create a large amount of volume near the roots, which is another characteristic of a modified emo hairstyle.

Colored

A traditional emo hairstyle is black but modern emo hairstyles contain chunky blonde highlights or an array of colors. The highlights and colors are not placed in a certain area; you choose the location you want to express your personal style. One example of a colored emo hairstyle is bleach-blonde bangs and top highlights with long black hair underneath. Another way to add color to an emo hairstyle is to incorporate red streaks along the bangs portion of a traditional, unisex emo hairstyle.
