If you want to create a flattering hairdo that doesn't involve a trip to the beauty parlor, buy some hair rollers, a box of bobby pins, a fabric-covered elastic band and some decorative hair accessories. Do-it-yourself hairdos can turn out looking better than some professionally created ones, and the money saved is an added bonus.
Setting Your Hair
If feminine curls are what you're after, you need enough rollers to cover your entire head. After washing and air-drying your hair, set your hair with a row of rollers, starting from the front of your head to the back. Set the sides of your hair, rolling small sections of your hair under. In about 4 hours, or overnight, the rollers can be removed and your hair can then be combed and styled. Hair that is set in rollers looks great without having to do anything else to it. (Note that before setting your hair, you may want to apply a little mousse to it to give the set a little body.)
Creating Fancy Dos
If you're looking for a hairstyle that's a little out of the norm, lifting and twisting the top section of your hair is a technique you can use to create a little height and sophistication. Secure this section of your hair with an elegant hair clip to keep your hair in this position. You can let the rest of your hair drape your shoulders, if you desire, or you can gather your hair into a ponytail and hold it together with a matching hair clip. Another way to create a fancy do-it-yourself hairdo is to comb your hair back and braid it. When the braid is complete and secured at the end with a fabric covered elastic band, fold the braid up against the back of your head and tuck in the end of the braid so the elastic band is concealed. Secure a flower to the back of your head, right above the folded braid.
Make It Simple
A ponytail is a simple do-it-yourself hairdo that always gives a polished look. After setting your hair in medium size rollers, comb hair back and gather it into a chic ponytail. Secure the ponytail in place with a covered elastic band. Once in place, the elastic band can be concealed with a small section of hair from the ponytail by wrapping the section of hair around it and securing the ends with a hairpin. Another way of hiding the elastic band is to tie a pretty ribbon around it. Curl wisps of hair along the sides of the face for a romantic look.
