Make Hair Less Thick

Comb-like shears leave some hair untouched between teeth while cutting other pieces.

Some people crave thick hair, while others struggle to control the volume of their hair. Instead of fighting to tame thick and unruly tresses, make a bulky head of hair more manageable by physically thinning it. Thinning shears specially designed for this purpose have strategically placed teeth that will remove as much or as little hair as you want.

Instructions

1. Purchase a pair of thinning shears. Visit a beauty store to consult with an expert and find a high end set, order a pair online or seek out a less expensive pair at a discount department store. Expect to spend in the range of $30 to $125 for quality thinning shears.

2. Determine the type of thinning shears that is right for your hair. Select a set with two rows of teeth if you don't seek to remove a great deal of hair. Choose a bulk-removing pair with fewer wide teeth if you have exceptionally thick or curly locks. Refer to the numerical label, such as "15 percent removal," which expresses the amount of hair between blades removed per cut.

3. Comb hair until smooth. Grab a small section of hair in your hand, no more than several inches wide, from one side of your head. Distance shears between one-third and half of the distance from scalp to tip. Open shears and slip them onto the strip of hair.

4. Angle shears at a 45-degree angle and close to make a single cut. Open shears and remove from hair. Comb through section to remove cut the hair. Continue moving around head in the same direction, cutting and combing through similarly-sized sections of hair.

5. Repeat once, circling around head, if additional thinning is absolutely necessary. Vary vertical positioning of cuts from previous ones to avoid a patchy appearance. Repeat a third time if your hair is particularly curly, varying the vertical positioning again.
