What To Do With A Bad Perm

There are ways to cover up or fix a bad perm.

Don't panic if you walked into a hair salon and asked for a perm and walked out sporting a frizzy mess. You don't have to walk around for a few weeks looking like a prize poodle. There are things you can do with your bad perm to make it look better until it grows out.

Moisturize

One of the most common results of a bad perm is dry, frizzy hair, which is the result of chemicals in the perm removing vital oils from your hair. Do not get another perm or a chemical straightening treatment in an attempt to reverse the perm; this severely damages your hair and leads to breakage and hair loss in addition to the dryness you're already experiencing. Instead, use moisturizing shampoos and conditioner. Twice a week, use a deep-conditioning treatment, which you should leave on your hair for 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing. You can use non-chemical straightening creams and mousses, but avoid using flat irons or curling irons, which can contribute to further dryness and breakage.

Accessories and Updos

Camouflage your bad perm through clever accessories and styling. Try tying hair back with a colorful scarf or using the scarf as a wide headband. Try an updo. To put your hair in an updo, use a de-frizzing product and then twist your hair back in a chignon secured with bobby pins.

Retraining Curl

When wearing your hair down, you can retrain the curl to an extent by rolling your hair in large foam rollers and letting it dry. Make sure your hair is moisturized and avoid using hot rollers. When your hair is dry, remove the rollers for a softer curl.

New Cut

As your perm grows out, consider sporting a shorter style for a while to minimize the contrast between the permed hair and the natural hair. Try a pixie haircut or shoulder-length layers.
