Low Bun Hairstyles For Graduation

The hair bun is the perfect updo for a graduation ceremony.

When deciding wear your hair for graduation, consider pulling it in to a low bun. This chic, yet elegant hairstyle is a classy updo was made famous by stars such as Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly. Whether you want to pull it to the side or straight down the nape, the low bun will never fail. The hardest part of the hairstyle is deciding exactly how you want to style the bun.

Traditional Low Bun

The traditional low bun is the classic version of the bun. Often spotted on brides, the hair is pulled into a ponytail and secured at the nape of the neck. Twist the hair and coil it downward so it is secure at the nape with bobby pins. Add embellishments to the hair by wrapping flowers or rhinestones around the bun. Smooth the hair with a shine serum or pomade and secure with hairspray.

Low Side Bun

Pulling your hair into a low side bun is a modern-day version of the classic bun. There are two ways to create the low side bun -- slicked back or a messy version. Both versions require the hair to be pulled to the side of the head and secured behind the ear. Like the traditional bun, wrap the hair around the ponytail holder and secure to the head. The slicked back version requires a shine serum applied to your hands to smooth hair and tame flyaways. The messy version involves pulling hair upwards to create volume around the crown of your head. Secure the entire style with hairspray.

Loose Side Bun

The loose side or back bun is a similar version of the bun but without the tight wrapping. Pull the hair to the back nape of the head or to the side, behind the left or right ear. Secure the hair with a ponytail holder. Twist the hair, similar to a traditional bun, but once you wrap it around the ponytail holder, secure the style with another ponytail holder. This will loosen the hair instead of being a tight coil. Secure the hair with hairspray and smooth any flyaways.

Braided Bun

A simple twist on the side bun is to add a braid that extends from your front hair line to the bun. Gather a section of hair at your front hairline and create a French braid with only a section of hair from the hairline to the back of the hair. Lay the braid with the rest of the hair. Pull all the hair, including the braid to the side of your head into a low ponytail secured under the right or left ear. Wrap the bun as normal. The back of your hair will show a braid extending downward into the bun. Another option includes adding more braids, smaller braids or a headband braid to the hairstyle.
