Keeping hair up off the face makes it easier to notice your dress and accessories.
Selecting the right hair style for prom can seem like a daunting task. Updos are popular choices because they keep the hair off of the face and back, showing off the dress and accessories. Updos also seem more formal than leaving the hair loose or wearing it down. Two classic updos are the chignon and French twist. These styles are easy to create and can be worn with any style of prom dress. Top off your hair style with a sparkling tiara or jeweled hair comb for an elegant finished look.
Instructions
Chignon
1. Pull hair back into a ponytail at the nape of the neck. You can position the chignon in the center of the head or off to one side.
2. Divide the ponytail into two equal sections. Tease the sections at the base to keep them secure within the hair elastic.
3. Wrap the first section of hair loosely around the base of the ponytail. Pin into place with bobby pins the same color as your hair.
4. Wrap the second section around the first, creating a larger bun. Pin this in place as well.
5. Smooth loose hairs and finish the style with a pomade to keep the hair in place.
French Twist
6. Gather hair at the base of the neck. Twist tightly, then pull upward so the twist of hair is laying flat against the head.
7. Twist the hair until it is tight, but not painful, and the hair sits flat around the sides and top of the head. If you have bumps or loose spots, drop the hair and begin again.
8. Fold the excess hair, which extends past the top of the French twist downward, and tuck behind the twist.
9. Weave a hair comb into the twist so that it passes through the outer edge of the hairstyle, then through the hair on the head beside the twist.
10. Gently work the hair comb into the French twist until the edge of the comb sits parallel to the side of the twist and the teeth of the comb securely hold the twist in place.
