Perm New Growth Hair

Perm New Growth Hair

Most women with kinky hair use hair perms or relaxers on new growth and virgin hair. New growth is new hair that grows after your most recent relaxer. Since new growth hair has not been chemically treated, it is exceptionally curly, and the contrast between the new growth hair and the relaxed hair can ruin a good hairstyle. Since relaxers can damage hair, there are important steps to take when retouching new growth hair.

Instructions

1. Find out when you had your last perm to determine if you are due for a retouch. A retouch is when you apply the perm only to the new growth, and a full perm is when you apply relaxer to the entire hair. Only get a full perm if all your hair is unrelaxed or virgin. Retouch your new growth every 8 to 12 weeks, depending on the texture of your hair. Retouching hair sooner than 8 weeks tends to damage it, increase dryness and increase the likelihood of split ends and breakage. Retouching hair later than 12 weeks is also not a good idea.

2. Make sure the relaxer only touches the new growth. Do not allow the relaxer to touch previously relaxed hair. Even the most gentle relaxers damage and dry hair. Most women who use relaxers are of African descent, and Afro-textured hair is already naturally dry. Therefore, allowing the relaxer to touch previously relaxed hair leads to overprocessing.

3. Protect your hair and scalp when applying perms to new growth hair. Applying relaxers to hair is a dangerous process, and if done improperly, relaxers can burn off the hair or scalp during the relaxing process. Hence, while relaxing hair, use plenty of basing oils and hair protectants, do not allow the relaxer to stay too long in the hair and follow the instructions on the relaxer kit closely.

4. Keep your hair moisturized. Most women who use hair perms already have naturally dry hair, and the perms themselves further dry hair. Therefore, after you have permed your hair, use a deep conditioner, which should come with the relaxer kit. During the interim period-the 8 to 12 week period between retouchs-apply a daily moisturizer to your hair one to three times a day, depending on the dryness of your hair.

5. Visit a hair professional. If you have never relaxed hair or feel uncomfortable doing it, have a hair professional do it. Also, if you experience problems with your hair, speak to a hair professional.
