Bleaching can leave your hair with mild to severe damage due to acidic action of strong chemicals or wrong handling or extreme heat application during the procedure. The ruined hair might feel dry, spongy, porous, brittle or rough due to damaged hair cuticles which cover the cortex, carrying the hair's natural color. While store-bought potion and products might help repair the condition, there are quite a few easy, natural ways to get your hair healthy after bleaching.
Cutting and Coloring
As soon as you notice damaged hair, make it a point to save the rest of the undamaged hair by getting a hair cut. Make an appointment with a salon and insist on a careful trim to get rid of the damaged portions of your hair while retaining the healthy parts. This will help your hair to grow faster. Also, a nice sharp hair cut, every two to three months, makes your hair look lustrous and well-maintained. Since your hair is bleached, you have to dye it regularly so that the fading of the bleach does not make your hair look worse. Dye your hair a slightly darker shade, closer to your natural color, to give it a healthy look.
Drying and Styling
Bleached hair is usually stripped off all its moisture, making it ultra dry and brittle. Avoid the process of blow drying your hair as this will make your hair more dry and give it a frizzy look. Stop blow drying while your hair is slightly damp or use a cool temperature. Let the rest dry on its own. This will retain some moisture and look healthier. For extremely dry hair, you can apply heat protection creams after a head bath to reverse the condition. As straightening and perming can also damage your hair, avoid these processes, especially since your hair has been ruined with bleach already. This will prevent further breakage and is one of the most important tenets to remember about protecting your hair after bleaching.
General Measures
The most effective method to cure damaged hair post-bleaching is to settle on a regular hair care regimen. Once every week, take one-quarter cup of coconut oil and heat it for a couple of minutes. Mix this with the juice of half a lime and rub the concoction into the skin of your scalp and roots. Make sure each strand of hair is rubbed with the mixture. Cover your head with a warm, damp towel and leave undisturbed for 30 minutes. Remove the towel and wrap a thick cloth around your head for no less than 12 hours, and even overnight. Afterward, rinse your hair well with cold water and any shampoo of your choice. Application of herbal powders like henna, amla and shikakai (a teaspoon each mixed with the shampoo) can help to condition your hair naturally. Let your hair air dry. In general, drink lots of water and eat plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits.
