The amount of melanin in hair determines how dark the hair is. The more melanin, the darker the hair.
African-American hair contains the same biological makeup as non African-American hair, but the parts of the hair are put together in a different way. All hair contains the cuticle, cortex, melanin, follicle and sebaceous glands. African-American hair can have up to two times as much cuticle, and has a thicker and coarser texture, according to Treasured Locks. African-American celebrities style their hair in a variety of ways ranging from short and straight to long and wavy.
Tyra Banks
Tyra Banks is a model, producer, and entrepreneur. Tyra has showcased a wide variety of different hairstyles since first becoming a runway model in the early 1990's. In the 2009 season of "The Tyra Show," Tyra wore her hair natural without any extensions or hair styling. The result was a medium-length style that was slightly coarse in appearance. Tyra has also rocked long, stick-straight hair, a bob that fell right below her chin, red hair, and wavy hair. Despite the many changes Tyra's hair is generally worn long and dark with a few caramel highlights. Tyra regularly admits to using hair extensions, or weaves. Many of the African-American contestants a show Tyra produces and hosts, "America's Next Top Model," receive hair extensions when undergoing the makeover process.
Beyonce
This singer and actress keeps her hair shoulder-length and longer and incorporates extensions. Beyonce's hair is usually worn long and wavy. She sometimes wears natural looking weaves that are dark brown and slightly coarse. At the 2009 Oscars Beyonce wore her hair slicked back and in a low curly pony-tail secured right at the base of her neck. Beyonce also sported a natural-looking hairstyle at the 2008 Academy Awards. She wore her hair dark brown with light highlights. For the 2010 Grammy's Beyonce's hairstyle was far from natural-looking. Beyonce wore blonde hair extensions with Bella Via Hair Glitz, which are sparkled strands of hair.
Rihanna
This singer wears hear hair in a very short, angled style. Rhianna generally wears her hair very dark, with bangs or side-swept bangs. Rhianna's hairstyles are considered edgy and flattering for her long and angular face. She has worn her hair black, a warm blonde, and two-toned with the front part of the hair dark brown and the back blonde. Rhianna's hair is known for being very short and full of layers. In 2010, Rhianna changed her hair dramatically when she cut it into a bowl-style and dyed it bright red.
