Relief For Scalp Soreness From Braiding

Braids can cause scalp soreness over time.

Wearing hair in braids, whether loose and lowing braids or tightly woven cornrows, can irritate scalp over time. Depending on how long you have had the braids in, the condition of your hair and scalp will impact your ability to withstand the stress your braids cause. Knowing relieve soreness can help you keep your braids longer and know when the time has come to move on to a new hairstyle for the time being.

Tightness

Loosening the tightness of braids can help alleviate scalp soreness. This is especially true with tightly woven braids or longer-length hair. The weight of the hair pulling down on the scalp can cause soreness. By loosening braids, you take pressure off the scalp. By having hair braided loosely in the first place, you can avoid soreness. If you have long braids, pull the braids back in to a loose ponytail on occasion to keep the braids from swinging around. This helps relieve soreness.

Sun Exposure

Braided hair, especially when the whole head is braided in small cornrows, exposes the scalp to the elements. If you have a lot of scalp exposed because of braids, your skin may become sensitive to heat and sun. Wearing a hat or head covering such as a scarf will help relieve soreness caused by sun exposure. You can apply sunscreen or sunblock directly to the scalp area when you will be in the sun for extended periods of time in order to prevent sunburned scalp.

Sores and Tender Spots

You can soothe portions of the scalp which have become sore and tender to the touch due to braiding. A apply topical ointments directly to the scalp. Using an applicator for targeted application, such as a cotton swab, will allow you to get to the sore spots precisely. Use tea tree oil, chamomile tea or lavender extract to help calm down irritated skin. If the sores have progressed to a point where they have formed a scab or emit pus, use hydrogen peroxide or an antibacterial ointment designed for topical use on the skin.

Giving Hair a Break

Don't leave braids in more than a maximum of two months. By taking braids out after one to two months, you will help relieve scalp soreness and thus give your hair and scalp a chance to recover from the stress associated with braids. After taking braids out, wash your hair using a gentle shampoo. Don't use harsh chemicals and hair dryers for a few weeks until your scalp does not feel tender to the touchany longer.
