Tight curls and headbands characterized the flapper style.
In the '20s, women's hairstyles changed dramatically from the longer, coiffed hair of the 1910s into the short, flapper styles of the '20s. The hair was considered a sign of female freedom, and was met with excitement and terror, according to the Hair Archives. Today, women wear '20s styles for fashion or costume parties.
Chignoned Bob
According to the Hair Archives, women in the '20s stirred up controversy with new hair styles, especially the "bob." Young women embraced the bob, a blunt cut with even-length hair from the back to the front of the head. Some young women, too frightened to commit to cutting the hair completely short, created techniques of resembling the bob without the emotional stress of cutting the hair short. According to Vintage Dance, to create the bob with long hair, place deep finger waves in the hair and pull the hair tightly behind the ear. Pull the remaining hair into a chignon (updo) or roll it under, so that it mimics a short, flipped bob.
Hair Accessories
Vintage Dance outlines many of the hair accessories that women in the '20s used to glamorize their look. Bands decorated with flowers, beads or pearls were popular. Women constructed bands out of ribbon, and wore them in a tiara-like style, rather than under the back of the hair as is popular today. Popular colors included blue, silver, cream and purple.
Bangs
Part of the "bob" style, bangs were very popular among women in the '20s. However, different types of bangs suit different faces, according to the 1920s-1930s website. For example, if the bangs slope to one side of the face and there is a cowlick, the bangs should part at the point of the cowlick. Curled or waved bangs (which women often wore in the '20s) need to be tapered to hold the finger wave. The most important thing to remember with bangs is that bangs should compliment the face of the woman wearing them.
