Updo Ideas

The ballerina bun is a type of updo hairstyle.

An updo can refer to a variety of hairstyles, from the casually elegant to the rigidly formal. An updo is a common hairstyle chosen by brides for their wedding day, by prom-goers who want the perfect fancy hairstyle to match their formal gown, or by women who want a different look without having to cut their hair. Regardless of the occasion, there is an updo idea that can suit virtually any woman.

Ballerina Bun

The ballerina bun, also sometimes called a classic bun, is one of the simplest and most enduring updo hairstyles. To execute a ballerina bun, gather all hair gently at the base of your skull. Use a rubber band to hold hair in that position, forming a low ponytail. Coil hair in a circular motion around the ponytail holder, securing hair with bobby pins. If you have very long or thick hair, it may be necessary to divide hair into pieces as you create the coil part of the ballerina bun.

Ponytail Updo

A ponytail updo, an option for women with shoulder length or longer hair, is created with a high ponytail that allows hair to cascade down the back of the head like a fountain. To create a ponytail updo, gather the hair into a high ponytail at the top of the skull. Secure it with a hair tie or rubber band. Smooth down any stray hairs with a styling gel. For a straight ponytail updo, straighten the ponytail with a flat iron, and then finish with a light spray or hair gloss. For a curly ponytail updo, lightly brush or comb the ponytail into small sections (one inch or smaller,) curling each section with a curling iron set on low heat. You may find it helpful to pin each section apart with a bobby pin as you work. When the entire ponytail has been curled, gently remove any bobby pins used, fluff the curls, and use a hairspray or hair gloss to finish the look.

High Bun

The high bun is an updo style that requires medium to long hair. To execute a high bun, pull hair into a sleek ponytail at the crown of the head. Secure any loose hair at the nape of the neck with bobby pins. Coil hair gently and wind in a circle around the ponytail base, securing with bobby pins as you go. Tuck the end piece of the pony tail into the center of the bun, fastening with a bobby pin.

French Twist

The French twist is a glamorous but easy updo hairstyle. To form a French twist, brush hair straight back, then anchor it slightly to one side of the head with bobby pins. Hold the secured hair down firmly while twisting loose hair inward into a coil. Use additional bobby pins to secure the twist to the skull as you move toward the top of the head. Conceal the ends of the hair into the twist, again securing with bobby pins, to finish the French twist.
