Crazy Hair Colors & Styles

Extreme hair styles are not just for Halloween anymore. The more that people get creative, the more we start seeing it in their hairstyles with anything goes trends. Funky hairstyles are a result of coloring and cutting and there seems to be no specific style that is intended. Each color and cut is precisely unique. These are not the average Joe hairdos. The cuts are often asymmetrical with razor cuts and alternating colors.

Mohawk

The Mohawk is a likely the winner for outrageous hairstyles, especially for females. This style is associated with the typical "punk rocker." Many Mohawks are tall on top and come in a bizarre assortment of colors, such as bright orange, pink, turquoise and purple. There are a few different types of Mohawks. Some are long with sharp points, while others are short and spiky, but wider than a typical Mohawk. There are also Mohawks that resemble the mane of a horse where the Mohawk is at the top and there is a tail that falls down the neck.

Retro Hair

Retro hairstyles have been fashionable through the years and in some way still can be acceptable and well-liked. Pin curls, the American wave, the pompadour and finger waves all fit in the retro hair style category. The Marilyn Monroe hairstyle has found its way back and sits high atop the retro hair list along with tie back bobs. The style can also be short, sleek, and with bangs.

Dreadlocks

Dreadlocks are seen more often than in past years and they are a more accepted funky hairstyle. However, dreadlocks are far from being main stream. As a rule, more men sport dreads than women, but they are acceptable for both. The matted hair that appears to be fused together and requires no maintenance whatsoever is typical of dreadlocks. The process of getting dreadlocks requires a good deal of back combing or "ratting" of the hair to the point where it is knotted and tangled. Then pieces of that hair are gathered and actually twisted, and then a hair wax is applied. This process is repeated until the hair is complete, which can take anywhere from three to five hours. Some people keep their dreadlocks in for up to five years.

Coontails

Coontail hairstyles look like the tails on a raccoon. This hairdo involves creating stripes in the hair, usually, but not always, in black and white. The hair must be straightened daily with a flat iron so all of the stripes are completely visible. Perfecting this style requires a lot of effort. The odder the colors incorporated into this style, the more outrageous it becomes. This hairdo also needs a lot of volume, especially at the crown of the head. The coontail is fine for all lengths of hair and it is best if it is not layered. As of today (2009), it is a very popular hair style with teens, according to Latest Hairstyles.com.

Emo

Emo hairstyles are not one particular type of cut or color. Emo is short for the word "emotional" so any cut, style or color that is deep and personal would be categorized as an Emo hairstyle. These funky hairstyles mirror the typical punk look that was more popular three decades ago. Each Emo hairdo will be different, so you could not go to a salon and necessarily ask for the Emo cut because the style and color is within the person and coincides with the way that they feel. The majority of Emo hairstyles do include bangs and some will literally cover the face or one eye. The colors are really dark, rare and rich. Emo hairdos are usually messy, but that look is intentional.
