Style Bridal Hair

Learn style bridal hair.

If you are the maid of honor or one of the bridesmaids at the wedding of a friend who is on a tight budget, don't panic if she requests your assistance with her bridal hairstyle. Even if the only hair you've styled is your own, there are tips to keep in mind as you style the bride's hair. Practice well before the big day to perfect the hairstyle, creating a wedding hairdo that is stunning regardless of its simplicity.

Instructions

1. Consider the style of the bridal gown. The bride's hairstyle should be chosen based not only on her preferences, but on what would work well with her dress. If her dress is more on the formal side, a conservative hairstyle would be appropriate. On the other hand, a gown with a youthful design would go well with a playful hairdo. If the wedding dress is inspired by a particular era, take this factor into account when you go over possible hairstyles with the bride.

2. Determine whether the bride should wear her hair up or down based on the neckline of her dress. For instance, if she is wearing a halter-style dress, her hair would look better swept up so she can show off her shoulders. Conversely, a strapless gown would look good whether the bride's hair is up, down or half-up, half-down. The key to choosing a bridal hairstyle that works with the neckline of the wedding gown is to make sure that neither the bride's hair nor her neckline are competing for attention. Instead, each detail should complement the other.

3. Stick with hairstyles that match your level of expertise. Choosing an intricate hairdo does not ensure that the bride's hair will look as though it was styled by a professional; a simple style--such as a ponytail--can look chic and classy as long as you keep it neat and dress it up with a few details like waves or curls, or even flowers (see Resources). Just be certain that the bridal veil or headpiece, if any, works with the hairstyle you plan to create.

4. Let the bride know which styling tools and products you need after you have agreed on a hairstyle. Flat irons, curling irons, curlers, bobby pins, hair gel and hairspray are all available at beauty supply stores. Practice well ahead of time until you have perfected the bride's hairstyle.

5. Step back and survey your work before the bride walks out the door on her wedding day. Be mindful of seemingly small details, such as flyaways and frizz. Tame them with hair serum or hair gel so they don't make what might otherwise be a flawless bridal hairstyle appear anything but impeccable.
