Do Finger Waving Hairstyles From The 1920s

The perfect finger wave takes time and practice.

Older, feminine hairstyles such as finger waves evoke the glamor and refinement of old Hollywood. Many of today's starlets have embraced this vintage style at one time or another because the glossy and sculpted finger wave creates a statuesque look that has stood the test of time when it comes to attractive hairstyles. Finger waves can be time consuming and difficult to perfect and may take a few tries, but the look created is worth the effort.

Instructions

1. Wet hair until it is dripping wet, then put in a liberal amount of styling lotion.

2. Side part your hair, then comb it back so it's diagonal. Press your index finger firmly on top of the diagonally combed hair. You will place your finger where you want your first finger wave to be, and it should be placed at a slight angle. You can get a feel for where to lay your finger from looking at photos of finger waves and where they fall.

3. Hold down the hair firmly with your index finger. Comb the hair below your finger in the opposite direction of the diagonally combed hair (toward the face). It should create a zigzag.

4. Continue to hold hair firmly with your index finger. Give more definition to the wave by inserting your comb about a quarter inch below your finger and pressing it to the right, moving hair toward the finger. This will create a ridge.

5. Hold the ridge in place with a waving clip. This long, thin hair clip will keep your style in place while your hair dries. Clip it over the ridge.

6. Underneath your first finger wave, comb hair back at a diagonal again. Continue with Steps 2 through 5, creating additional finger waves until they reach the bottom of the hair.

7. Dry hair with a hood hairdryer. Be mindful of the waving clips; they might get hot. Alternatively, let your hair dry naturally. Once hair is completely dry, take out the waving clips.
