Middle School Hairstyles For Girls

Middle school girls can wear a variety of different hairstyles.

The middle school years are often considered the transition period between elementary and high school. The students are no longer "kids," yet have not become "teens" quite yet. At this age, girls often develop an increased interest in their looks. As they begin experimenting with fashion, makeup and hairstyles, they strive to express their personality through their appearance. When selecting middle school hairstyles for girls, choose a style that works best with her personality and lifestyle.

Short Bob

For the preteen with an active lifestyle, a short bob hairstyle is a great look. This short hairstyle is relatively easy to maintain and can be easily pulled away from the face during sports or school activities. As explained by the Beauty and the Bath website, "The best bob hairstyles are easy to care for, allowing you to do what you need to and still look amazing with minimal touch-ups throughout the day." Since middle-school girls spend the majority of their days in school, they do not have much time for re-styling their hair every few hours. After initial styling in the morning, the bob hairstyle gives pre-teen girls the ability to move through their day without thinking about their hair. For an edgier look, have the stylist add choppy layers. For a softer look, opt for a side part and wispy, sideswept bangs.

Long and Layered

If the middle-school girl prefers a more glamorous look, opt for a long and layered hairstyle. Whether she wants it to fall just below the shoulders or extend down to her lower back, a long hairstyle adds instant beauty without a lot of maintenance. The main benefit of this hairstyle is that it works with any type of hair, including straight, wavy and curly. To keep the hairstyle somewhat simple for the middle-school girl to style on her own, only layer the look slightly. Short layers around the face and long layers in the back provide volume, yet require limited styling. After the hair is washed, it can be dried naturally or with a hair dryer. For extra volume, Velcro rollers or hot rollers can be used.

Ponytails

With a few creative modifications, the traditional ponytail can transition from a cute elementary-school hairstyle to a more mature middle-school hairstyle. The options for ponytails are numerous. A middle-school girl might choose a high ponytail, low ponytail, sleek ponytail, messy ponytail or side ponytail. When working with a traditional ponytail, add a bit of flair by pairing it with a chic headband or scarf wrapped around the head. For a messier style, twist the ends of the ponytail into a messy bun and pin them against the head. For a sleek look, gather the ponytail at the nape of the neck and pull it to the side, just below the ear. Add soft curls throughout the hair and a glittery headband.
