Instructions For A Home Perm

Get natural-looking curls with a home perm.

Many people shy away from doing home perms because they have heard disaster stories of self perming. Home perms, though, are inexpensive and are easy to perform by yourself or with the help of a friend. With the proper methods and procedures you can get beautiful curls with a home perm.

Instructions

1. Wash hair thoroughly with shampoo and conditioner. Do not scrub the scalp. Leave hair wet, but not dripping. Use a towel to blot any excess water.

2. Section your hair into seven sections using hair clips. There should be one section at the crown of the head, one section from the hairline to the crown, two on the sides and three equal sections at the back of the head.

3. Un-clip the section of hair at the crown of the head. Wrap the hair around the perming rod toward the back of the head. Secure the rod using a bobby pin. If the hair starts to dry at any time while you are wrapping use a spray bottle filled with water to dampen it again.

4. Move to the section that begins at the hairline and un-clip it. Wrap the hair around a perming rod toward the face. Secure the rod in place.

5. Un-clip one of the side sections of hair. Wrap it around a curling rod in a downward motion. Do the same for the other side. Secure the rod using a bobby pin.

6. Un-clip each section of hair at the back of the head and wrap each one around its own rod in a downward motion. Secure each rod with a bobby pin.

7. Rub a small amount of Vaseline around the hairline. This will keep the perming solution from getting onto the skin and irritating it.

8. Apply perming solution to each section of hair that is wrapped around a curling rod. Do not miss any hair. Leave the solution in the hair according to the manufacturer's instructions. Each brand of home perm will be different.

9. Rinse hair, with rods still in place, with lukewarm water. Use an old towel to blot it dry.

10. Neutralize the hair with the neutralizing solution that was provided in the home perm kit.

11. Gently remove the perming rods from the hair and rinse hair thoroughly. Do not use shampoo or you may wash out the perming solution.

12. Apply any conditioner that was in the home perm kit to the hair and avoid brushing or stretching hair for the next day.
