What Wear While Pregnant

Bright tops make your face glow.

Even though a normal pregnancy takes just nine months, you may feel as though you have been pregnant forever by the time your baby arrives. Your rapidly changing body feels unfamiliar to you, and your favorite clothes quickly become too small. Learning what to wear while pregnant can help you feel good about yourself, save you from purchasing unnecessary clothing and keep you looking attractive throughout your pregnancy.

Instructions

First and Second Trimesters

1. Wear your regular clothes during the early days and weeks of your pregnancy. The recommended weight gain for the first trimester is just two to four pounds, according to a publication from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Choose pants or skirts with a bit of stretch to provide extra room in the waist and keep you comfortable.

2. Analyze your wardrobe for skirts and pants that still fit you in the hips and thighs after you pass the 12-week mark. Purchase a wide elastic band that fits around your midsection. This allows you to extend the life of your non-maternity pants and skirts by holding up your unbuttoned pants or skirt.

3. Try on your longer tops and blouses. Your breasts are likely larger, and even though these shirts cover up your expanding tummy, they may be too tight in the chest. Put away shirts that no longer fit, and save the few that still do.

4. Invest in a few maternity shirts and bottoms. Avoid purchasing your entire wardrobe while you are in the second trimester, as you may be surprised how much larger your belly will become during the third trimester.

5. Look for tops with fashion details that will expand as your baby grows. Side elastic panels, wrap tops and shirts with belts that tie at the back are all maternity styles that do not look too big on you in the early second trimester, but will still fit later in the pregnancy. Pair these tops with maternity pants or skirts.

6. Purchase some maternity jeans or shorts to wear during the second trimester. If your work requires business clothes, purchase two pair of neutral pants, two dresses and a couple of skirts. Shop at consignment stores or consider secondhand maternity clothes from an online source to save money. Choose bottoms that have either a waistband that fits below your belly or an elastic panel.

7. Meet with a bra fitting specialist in a department or maternity store to choose a few well-fitting bras. Maternity bras, while more expensive, offer a superior fit. You may need to move up in both band and cup size.

Third Trimester

8. Wear the maternity clothes you purchased during your second trimester, but add a few more pieces to avoid becoming bored with your entire wardrobe. The seasonal changes that may occur between your second and third trimester may require that you now wear short or long sleeves, depending on your climate.

9. Layer light maternity sweaters in the fall and winter over your shirts to add visual interest, and help take the focus away from your belly. Wear shirts and tops that do not bind or constrict your movements. Even if you enjoy showing off your third trimester belly, shirts that are too tight may be uncomfortable under your arms or ride up to expose the maternity panel of your pants.

10. Wear skirts and dresses if you feel uncomfortable or constricted in pants. A black wrap dress will skim your body, make you feel slimmer and not bind you. Long maternity skirts in a neutral color allow freedom of movement and coverage, while shorter A-line maternity skirts look great with a pair of flats.

11. Choose comfortable but stylish shoes during this final trimester. If your feet and legs swell, you may need to purchase new shoes in a larger size. Flats, open sandals and leather boots a half-size larger will likely be more comfortable than toe-pinching high heels.
