Updos Of The Twenties

Flapper girls of the '20s used finger waves to create updos in their bob hairstyles.

The roaring '20s was the decade of jazz, rebellion and short hair for women. The '20s, which started just after World War I ended and just before the Great Depression, was full of fresh hairstyles from the short, fearless bob to long, luxurious hair that carried over from the previous decade. Recreate the famous updos to bring back the glamour and sophistication of the jazz era.

Pin Curls

Women in the '20s did not have hairdryers, curling irons or straightening irons. To create curls, they had to start the night before and wait overnight for their hair to set into the proper hairdo. To recreate pin curls, which remained popular long after the '20s, wash and condition your hair the night before and towel dry. Separate your hair into four separate sections -- left crown, right crown, left nape and right nape. Work with the left crown section of your hair and use end paper to roll the curls tightly to your head and secure with a double prong clip. Work around your head, from section to section, until all the pin curls are set. Leave overnight and remove the clips in the morning. Comb through the curls, pull hair up to the top of your head and secure.

Chignon

The chignon was famous in the '20s because of the sleek and classic style. During the '20s, women would pull their hair back tightly and wrap the chignon in the back of their head. To recreate the look, wash and dry hair thoroughly and apply a straightening balm. Work the balm through your hair from root to tip and brush hair back into a ponytail. Wrap the ponytail into a chignon and secure with bobby pins. Other ways to wear the chignon include at the center nape of your neck and the side of your head.

Barrel Curls

Barrel curls allowed women in the '20s to add more volume to their hair. To recreate the look, wash and dry hair the night before you want wear the style. Wrap your hair, from the crown of your head to the sides and then the back with 1 to 2 inch barrel curls. Part bangs to the side and pull into a roller. Spray the rollers, and your hair, with a medium-hold hairspray and sleep on the curlers. In the morning, remove the curlers and use your fingers to arrange the curls. The bang curl should remain intact and large. The back and side curls should be pulled up to the crown and back of your head and secured with bobby pins.

Finger Waves

Finger waves were popular in the '20s because it allowed women with the new short bob or Eton crop to have an updo. Recreating finger waves is a trial and error process that is done with styling gel and your fingertips. To create the famous updo, wash and dry your hair until the hair is damp. Apply a heavy styling gel into your hair and comb it through entirely; pull hair into a deep side part. Using your fingers, create waves in your hair by holding the hair with a comb or finger and positioning the curl against the head. Secure the hairdo with a heavy-hold styling gel.
