Make A Classy Chignon

A chignon is an elegant, yet conservative hairstyle appropriate for work.

A chignon is a classic updo hairstyle with a number of possible variations. A perennial favorite of brides, prom-goers and businesswomen, the chignon begins with a humble ponytail. It's the height of the ponytail -- and the way you twist and pin it -- that allows you to make the look uniquely yours. You can adorn a chignon with flowers, feathers or a dramatic hairpiece for formal flair.

Instructions

1. Apply smoothing serum to freshly washed and dried hair. The cleaner your hair, the better for making a chignon. Comb your hair to evenly distribute the serum.

2. Brush your hair to one side with the paddle brush, smoothing it close to your head, and gather it into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck.

3. Divide the ponytail into two equal halves. Tease each half; holding the hair out straight, placing the comb at the ends and pushing it up the hair toward the root. Continue to backcomb your hair for one to two minutes. Gently smooth the backcombed sections with the paddle brush.

4. Twist the two sections of hair around each other, until the twisted piece begins to curl toward your head. Wrap it around itself in a spiral.

5. Pin the chignon in place by inserting a bobby pin every inch, all the way around.

6. Finish with a spritz of hairspray to hold the sides in place.
