Is It Best To Get A Perm Before Getting Kinky Twists

Kinky twists require little maintenance, allowing you time to enjoy your morning.

Are you interested in a fun new style for your hair? Kinky twists add a playful, fun dimension to your hair, and they are relatively easy to do with the help of a stylist. Another added benefit of kinky twists is the low cost. They are also easy to maintain, and most women can wear them --- even those with thinning hair. Women looking to give their hair a break from chemical treatments often turn to kinky twists as an option.

Should You Get a Perm Before Getting Kinky Twists?

According to Denise Hewitt, a master stylist at Hair Essentials in Maitland, Fla., it is not advisable to get a perm or relaxer before getting kinky twists. This is because chemical treatments weaken the hair, and kinky twists work best when the hair has some texture. After a chemical treatment like a perm, the hair is in a fragile state and may weaken even further during the process of styling the hair. Before getting kinky twist,s it is best if your hair is at least an inch long --- so if you have a short hairstyle, you may need to wait a few months for it to grow out.

The Process

Similar to Senegalese twists, kinky twists involve twisting the hair into spirals. The twists start out with a small braid, and the hair is twisted by rolling the strands all the way to the end. Most kinky twist styles involve adding extensions at the start of the braid and rolling to the end. Roll hair once to achieve a kinky fat style. Tighter twists involve continually rolling the strands and twisting at the same time. Rolling the ends on a small rod will curl them. To seal the ends of each twist, the hair is usually dipped into boiling water, although some stylists will simply use a lighter.

Maintaining Your Style

Kinky twists are a relatively low-maintenance hairstyle. Wash the hair as needed, usually once or twice a week, depending on your lifestyle. Applying a leave-in conditioner after washing will help the hair retain moisture. Moisturizing the hair and scalp while wearing the twists is important, since extensions can sometimes cause dryness and an itchy scalp. Spraying the hair with oil sheen can give the twists a nice shine before going out. With proper upkeep, a kinky twist hairstyle lasts up to three months.

Cost

If you decide to use your natural hair, the cost of getting kinky twists is relatively low, since you will not be purchasing extensions. If your hair is short or if you prefer a longer style with some volume, you might consider purchasing extensions. The best extensions for twists are those labeled as "kinky" or "Afro," since their textures look more natural and will blend well. The cost for extensions range between $8 and $30 depending on length, texture and brand. While kinky twists can be done at home for little money, some people may not have the time. In that case, stylists will braid your hair in the kinky style of your choice, for a cost of $70 to $100 depending on your location.
