Why Fine Hair Texture Can'T Hold Curls Easily

Fine hair resists twisting which makes it hard to curl.

Fine hair is very flexible allowing it to be pulled into a curl or hair style, but its lack of protein and diameter cause it to fall out of the curl or style quickly.

Fine Hair Lack of Protein

Fine hair has about half as much protein as thicker hair. This causes fine hair to break and split easily. This lack of protein makes it hard for fine hair to hold styles or maintain volume.

Fine Hair Lack of Diameter

The diameter of fine hair is about a fourth less than that of medium or thick hair. This makes fine hair more flexible which causes hair styles to fall flat. Less diameter causes hair to be straight and rigid so it resists twisting and curling.

Fine Hair Holding Heat

Because of its lack of protein, volume and diameter, fine hair has a hard time holding heat. Most curling techniques, hot rollers, curling irons and steam curlers involve heating the hair. Fine hair looses heat too quickly to allow the curls to set.
