Do 40s Glamor Curls

Large curls are characteristic of the 1940s.

Glamorous 1940's hairstyles are en vogue, with celebrities such as Christina Aguilera and Katie Perry favoring vintage hairstyles. A head of large, flowing curls is characteristic of the vintage '40s glamor hairstyles. Pin curling is the ideal method for creating these large, flowing curls. You can even sleep while your hair dries and curls. In the morning, styling takes just a few minutes as you remove the bobby pins and add hair accessories to complete the '40s hairdo.

Instructions

1. Dampen your hair with a spray bottle filled with water or style your hair after showering.

2. Brush your hair to remove all tangles.

3. Part your hair with a comb. Side parts are most commonly associated with vintage hairstyles. The side part should be positioned approximately one inch to the left or right of where you'd place a center part.

4. Separate a 2-inch square section of hair at the front of your scalp, just beside your part. Use large chunks of hair for this hairstyle, as this will produce large, '40s style curls.

5. Hold your thumb and pointer finger approximately two inches apart, and wrap the section of hair around your thumb and pointer finger, starting at the tip and working toward the root. This will create a coil of hair.

6. Place the coil of hair flat against your scalp, and run a bobby pin across the coil to hold it in place. This is called a pin curl.

7. Put all of your hair in pin curls, working in 2-inch square segments. It's generally easiest to start at the front of your head and work your way toward the back, while also working from the top of your head down.

8. Dry your hair with a hairdryer with a diffuser attachment or allow your hair to air dry overnight. If you allow your hair to dry overnight, wrap a satin or silk scarf around your head to keep your hair smooth.

9. Release the pin curls once your hair is dry. Remove the bobby pins, starting with the bottom sections of hair and working toward the top of your head. As you remove each curl, brush the individual curl once, then immediately twirl the section of hair in the direction of the curl to redefine it.

10. Style with your fingers. Do not brush out the curls, as this will turn them into waves. Add a headband or use a scarf as a headband for a traditional '40s look. Alternatively, secure front sections of hair at the temples with clips.

11. Apply a light coat of hairspray to maintain the curls, especially in humid weather.
