Various Anime Hairstyles

Anime hairstyles can be for men or women.

Anime hairstyles are all the rage in Japan. Inspired directly by popular anime cartoons that are well loved across the country and the world, people are translating anime hairstyles into real-life hairdressing. Anime hairstyles break the Asian hair tradition of long, sleek, dark hair, replacing it with jagged, colorful and untamed hair styles. Anime hairstyles mostly fit into a few different categories.

Bob

The bob is an old classical haircut but also a favorite of anime characters. While the actual cut itself appears to be more mainstream than some other anime cuts, it's is often livened up with hair dye. Coloring the haircut with blue or bright red or pink hair dye or highlights adds an element of a cartoon character to the look. Anime bobs are mostly finished with straightening irons to achieve a flawless, smooth bob. Despite the sleekness, anime bobs can also be finished with jagged edges on the fringe or at the bottom of the bob to give it that anime twist of the original.

Long, Layered Hairstyles

Those who want an anime look with slightly longer hair would tend to go for the look of a long-haired anime character. The look digresses from traditional Asian hairstyles as the hair is often filled with layers and a noneven fringe. As a result, the hair has a lot of volume, even though the style is typically finished with straightening irons. While the finished look is sleek, this hair style is best finalized with some hair wax to bring out some small quirks created by the layers.

Extra-Long Hairstyles

Some anime characters have very long hair reaching below their waist, and this style is increasingly being translated into real-life hair styles. Many opt to have hair extensions rather than waiting to grow their hair to achieve this look. The finished length of the hair has some wild layers, some of which are quite short to contrast with the length of the longest hairs. Adding in hair extensions is also an opportunity to introduce some different colors to the hair style, from subtle browns to brighter reds and pinks. A popular style for the fringe is to have a thick, long, straight fringe reaching down to just above the eyes.

Male Styles

Anime hairstyles are chosen as much by men as by women. As the typical anime look for men is mid-length to long hair, male and female anime hairstyles are practically interchangeable. Some common anime elements used in male haircuts include having a long fringe that partially covers one eye, and having spikes that stand on end from the top of the head or that point forward. The messed up, "bedhead" look is another popular anime hairstyle for men. Most wear their hair black, while a few introduce streaks of color into their hair, often choosing something bright like blue, red or even white.
