Removing Semipermanent Hair Dye

Why it's Easier to Remove Semi-Permanent vs. Permanent Hair Dye

Semi-permanent dye does not contain peroxide, an ingredient commonly found in permanent hair-dye. Semi-permanent dye is designed to not penetrate the hair cuticle, which means it will eventually fade within six weeks. Permanent dye will never come out, and the only true way is to wait for the dyed hair to grow out.

Over-the-Counter Dye Removal Products

There are several products you can buy at local drug or beauty supply stores designed to remove semi-permanent hair dye. Modulate by Igora or hair color remover from Goldwell are recommended by many users on Internet forums discussing the subject of rectifying hair dye mistakes, as in Color Oops.

Home Remedies

Washing your hair with a shampoo that has a high "pH" level (Prell is a good one to try) several times within the first day of the dye disaster should get most of its color out.

If it has been more than a day and you want to try and get the color out, mix lemon juice and vinegar together and use a paint brush to coat your hair with it. Wait 10 minutes and wash again. You should notice a gradual lightening of the color. Repeat these steps every day once a day for a few days until you are satisfied with your hair color. Don't perform this ritual more than once a day, because the concoction can cause your hair to turn greenish when overdone.
