What You Need To Do A Kinky Hair Twist

Kinky twist is a natural style done with few products.

A kinky hair twist is the process of twisting your natural un-relaxed hair into individual twists to achieve a hairstyle. Although most twists are done on hair that is completely natural; kinky twists can also be achieved on hair that has been permed or relaxed, by adding hair extensions. The process of twisting your hair is very simple. Kinky twists can last up to a month on hair that has extensions added. However, if you are twisting your natural hair, the twist may only last a week.

Hair Extensions

To achieve a kinky twist with relaxed hair, hair extensions will need to be added. Afro kinky extensions are available for purchase at most African American beauty supply stores. The hair is synthetic and comes in two sections, packaged in one pack. The average pack costs $5.99 and comes in a variety of colors and lengths.

Styling Gel

Any type of hard hold styling gel will work best on kinky twists. The only way the hair, whether it is natural or relaxed, will stay twisted for a long period of time is determined by the styling gel used. The styling gel is applied to the hair before you start the twisting process. The hair will need to be heavily saturated with the gel for the twist to keep its hold.

Rat-tail Comb

Using a rat-tail comb will provide you with a straighter detailed line. Although the parts for kinky twist do not have to be perfect through the middle and back of the head, when you reach the front of the head, the part should be exact and very neat.

Small Curling Rod

Attaching a small curling rod to the ends of each twist provides a natural finishing look to the ends of the twist. It is also a great way to lock the style in place, as the curl makes it difficult for the twist to unravel. To keep the curl from not falling or deflating, attach the rod in a spiral motion and dip the ends of the twists in hot water and allow them to dry completely, before detaching the rod.

Oil

Spraying a few mists of oil-sheen on the twists will keep the hair shining as well as healthier. African-American hair tends to become dry faster than that of other ethnic groups. Therefore, oil-sheen should be applied once a day for every day the twists are in the hair. This also keeps the hair from becoming brittle, which can result in breakage.

Do a Kinky Twist

Part your hair in small squares in the pattern of your choice. If you are using extensions, wrap the hair around the part of your natural hair that you want to twist. Add styling gel to both your hair and the extension. If you are not using extensions, add the gel directly to your hair. Divide the hair in two sections. Holding one strand in each hand, lap the left strand over the right strand in a clockwise motion. Continue this process until you reach the end of the twist. Take a small curling rod and roll the end of the twist. Leave the rod on, while you complete the rest of your head. After your whole head is completely twisted, dip the ends of the rollers in hot water. Allow them to air dry and remove the rods. Spray the hair with oil and style as usual.
