Make Ribbon Flower Barrettes

Make Ribbon Flower Barrettes

Create a barrette with ribbon flowers to give to any of your girl friends on a variety of occasions. Create ribbon flower barrettes for your bridesmaids to put in their hair at your wedding, or give a set to your niece or a friend at Christmas. You can make ribbon flower barrettes as simple or complex as you like; just make sure all your flowers will fit on the type of barrette you're using.

Instructions

1. Pull the wire gently out of the ribbon on one side of a 1-1/2 inch wide wire ribbon. This should cause the ribbon to ruffle. Continue pulling until all of the ribbon is ruffled.

2. Cut the excess wire away with a pair of wire cutters. Leave approximately 2 to 4 inches of wire at the end.

3. Fold the ribbon over itself, creating accordion type folds, on the pulled wire side. Stitch through the folds, once you've created 6 to 8 folds. Wrap the ribbon around the center folds, creating a spiral. Stitch back and forth through the bottom of the ribbon as you work to secure the ribbon together. A flower should begin to take shape. Continue doing this until you reach the end of the ribbon.

4. Fold and tuck the frayed end of the ribbon back into the flower, so you can't see it. Stitch through the ribbon on the ruffled wire side to secure the end in place.

5. Cut a small circle, approximately 1 to 2 inches in diameter, out of felt felt or fleece. Stitch it directly to the flower to secure it.

6. Stitch another wide piece of ribbon or a strip of felt to either side of the circle, creating a taut loop. Slide your hair barrette through the loop to hold the flower in place.

7. Apply a thin bead of glue or hot glue to either side of the barrette to secure the flower in place, if you do not plan to remove the flower from the barrette in the future.
