Black Hair Style Ideas

Black Hair Styling Art

The uniqueness of African American hair can be troubling to under-skilled hairstylists or to those who are not knowledgeable about the tight curl of African American hair texture. Permanent relaxers help to straighten coarse hair, making it more manageable and easier to style. There are many styles that you can achieve maneuvering black hair.

Weaves

There are a number of styles that can be achieved with weaves alone. Weaves are meant to appear natural and be free-flowing for the purpose of versatility in styling. A nondetachable weave is highly preferred but can be very expensive. Hair is tightly braided underneath so that the weave appears smooth and tracks are invisible. There are also weave ponytails that are available in a variety of hair colors and textures. Lace front weaves have also become very popular because of their easy application. They are very similar to traditional weaves, also allowing versatility and personalized styling. Hair textures of weaves vary, literally transforming black hair into Chinese, Indian or Malaysian textures.

Braids

Braids can take away the stress of maintaining African American hair for months at a time. There are a number of variations to braids. Braids can be created using human or synthetic hair. There are box braids, micro braids, goddess braids, snake braids, among many others. Micro braids are the most expensive because they are microscopic in size and allow the most versatility. These braids can be easily styled like weaves.

Locks

Locks are a lovely alternative to traditional styling but take a more permanent position. Locks can be colored, cut and styled but the matted form of dead hair will be irreversible. Locks are becoming increasingly popular and more mainstream as many black women begin to embrace their heritage and African culture.

Twists

There are natural twists and synthetic twists. Natural twists are a great style for black natural hair and, when taken out, leaves hair loosely curled. Kinky twists can last as long as braids ranging between three to six months depending on the texture of black hair.

Signature Afro

Originating in the 1960s, Afros represented more than just a great hair style. Afros made statements about self-empowerment and political change. As time progressed, Afros have become more versatile in the 21st century and now make a fashion statement. They can be loosely curled, colored or kinky but overall, Afros are a great black hair style that is free of restrictions and has very little limitation.
