Bun Hairstyle Ideas

The hair bun is a classic and elegant updo.

Hair buns are a simple and classic way to pull together any look. Ranging from the romantic messy bun to the modern high bun, there are many bun styles to choose from. Hair buns look great with both straight and curly hair and tend to work best with longer hair. However, if you have shorter hair, you can still create classic bun looks by simply clipping in hair extensions before styling a bun. You can also try using wrap-around hair pieces, which are designed to add volume and extend shorter ponytails.

The Romantic Messy Bun

If you want a romantic, carefree look, try out the messy bun. This style can be worn for either casual or formal events, depending on your accessories. The messy bun can either be placed near the crown or low on the nape. Placing the bun higher creates drama, while a lower bun has a more sultry look. To create this look, start by creating volume. If you hair isn't naturally wavy, take 1-inch sections of your hair and curl random pieces with a 1-inch curling iron. Loosen the curls with your fingers. Spritz with hairspray. If you have naturally wavy hair, simply apply a smoothing serum or anti-frizz serum throughout. Gather your hair into a ponytail and secure it with an elastic either at your crown or your nape, depending on your preference. Twist and wrap the ponytail around until you create a bun. Loop the ends into your elastic. If you hair is thick, secure another elastic around the bun. Leave the bun messy. Loosen a few face-framing pieces from the bun to soften the look. You can accessorize with a headband for a youthful style or a jeweled pin for a special occasion.

The Modern High Bun

The modern high bun is chic, sleek and adds instant drama to any look. This bun is placed at the crown, creating height and volume. More refined than the messy bun, the high bun works best with stick-straight hair. To get this look, straighten your hair in 1-inch sections with a flat iron. Apply a shine-enhancing serum throughout. Gather your hair in a high ponytail at or above your crown. The higher the bun, the more impact you will create. Secure the ponytail with an elastic. Twist the ponytail tightly around the center and secure with an elastic. Tuck in any stray strands with bobby pins. Slick back your hair with hair gel to create a smooth, sleek look. Spritz hairspray over the entire look to hold it in place. If you want a dramatic, voluminous, bun but don't have the long hair necessary for this look, simply clip in hair extensions before styling the bun or wrap a couple faux hair pieces around your natural bun to create the illusion of thick, long hair.

The Double Bun

For a fun, youthful and artistic look, try out the double bun style. To create the double bun, begin by parting your hair down the middle. Gather your hair and create two low ponytails. Secure the ponytails with elastics. Loosely wrap your right ponytail into a bun and secure with another elastic. Repeat this step with the left ponytail. Spritz hairspray all over to hold the style in place. Accessorize with a couple of jeweled barrettes if you wish.
