Homemade Saltwater Hair Texturizer

Homemade Saltwater Hair Texturizer

The "beach" look is a popular way to wear your hair. The look means your hair is slightly curly or wavy like you just got home from the beach. If you don't live by a beach or it's too cold to go to the beach, you can get this look right at home.

Get the Beachy Look

Saltwater is the main ingredient in the "beachy" look. Saltwater, wind and sun made your hair look chic and naturally wavy. You can get that look right at home without the beach. Fill an empty spray bottle with water (about 8 oz). Add two, very large, tablespoonfuls of sea salt to the water. Shake the bottle to dissolve the salt into the water. If you need some added texture, mix a teaspoon of hair gel into the saltwater and shake the bottle well. Take a shower to wet your hair, but do not use shampoo. When you get out of the shower, towel dry your hair. Spritz the saltwater to hair. Apply it liberally to your head, combing your hair through with your fingers. Scrunch up your hair with your fingers to a super wavy look and allow your hair to air dry. The saltwater both nourishes and texturizes your hair for that off-the-beach look.

Use Thinning Shears

Thinning shears are a great way to tame overly thick or unruly hair. They take off excess weight and make your hair look more manageable. Thinning shears can thin and shape your hair without altering your style because they only shorten the hair that falls between the gaps in the blade. Follow these steps to learn use thinning shears.

Instructions

1. Buy a high quality pair of thinning shears. The best place to buy good thinning shears is your local beauty supply store.

2. Brush your hair completely; ensure that it's smooth all over. Separate your hair into small sections.

3. Place a small section of hair in the thinning shears. Start with the thinning shears 3 inches away from your scalp.

4. Slide the thinning shears down a little bit and make another cut. Be careful not to cut too much hair at once.

5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 wherever your hair needs thinning. Make sure you don't overuse thinning shears or you could ruin the look of your hairstyle.

6. Use thinning shears every third haircut. If you use thinning shears too frequently you will make your hair appear thin and lifeless.

Make Ribbon Flower Barrettes

Make Ribbon Flower Barrettes

Create a barrette with ribbon flowers to give to any of your girl friends on a variety of occasions. Create ribbon flower barrettes for your bridesmaids to put in their hair at your wedding, or give a set to your niece or a friend at Christmas. You can make ribbon flower barrettes as simple or complex as you like; just make sure all your flowers will fit on the type of barrette you're using.

Instructions

1. Pull the wire gently out of the ribbon on one side of a 1-1/2 inch wide wire ribbon. This should cause the ribbon to ruffle. Continue pulling until all of the ribbon is ruffled.

2. Cut the excess wire away with a pair of wire cutters. Leave approximately 2 to 4 inches of wire at the end.

3. Fold the ribbon over itself, creating accordion type folds, on the pulled wire side. Stitch through the folds, once you've created 6 to 8 folds. Wrap the ribbon around the center folds, creating a spiral. Stitch back and forth through the bottom of the ribbon as you work to secure the ribbon together. A flower should begin to take shape. Continue doing this until you reach the end of the ribbon.

4. Fold and tuck the frayed end of the ribbon back into the flower, so you can't see it. Stitch through the ribbon on the ruffled wire side to secure the end in place.

5. Cut a small circle, approximately 1 to 2 inches in diameter, out of felt felt or fleece. Stitch it directly to the flower to secure it.

6. Stitch another wide piece of ribbon or a strip of felt to either side of the circle, creating a taut loop. Slide your hair barrette through the loop to hold the flower in place.

7. Apply a thin bead of glue or hot glue to either side of the barrette to secure the flower in place, if you do not plan to remove the flower from the barrette in the future.

Care For Textured Hair

Textured hair may be thicker and more course than other hair types. For this reason, extra care may be needed to keep the hair looking healthy. In addition, various processes such as straightening, coloring and relaxing can weaken the hair. More conditioning, along with the use of moisturizing products may help.

Instructions

1. Drinking plenty of water, eating a balanced diet and maintaining good health are vital steps to cultivate healthy hair and overall appearance.

2. Supplement. A multivitamin has benefits for the body, as well as the hair. Omega-3 capsules can be especially helpful for those with textured hair, as it will help with dryness that may typically occur. In addition, omega-3 is thought to stimulate growth and shine.

3. Wear a hat, or use shampoos and conditioners that contain sunscreen. Environmental protection is needed to guard against damage that can occur with sun exposure. Harsh UV rays can break down the keratin in hair, causing hair to fade and become brittle.

4. Shampoo regularly to help decrease build up on the hair. Textured hair may not require daily washing, however, cleansing is needed to remove products that may build up and cause the hair to appear dull.

5. Trim hair regularly to keep it healthy. The ends of the hair may become easily damaged and can travel up the hair shaft, spreading damage. Textured hair may need frequent trimming due to the use of flat irons or other damaging elements.

Prepare A Wedding Reception Checklist

Plan your wedding reception well in advance.

Planning a wedding can be time-consuming and stressful. Make wedding planning as simple as possible by creating a checklist for everything that needs to be done -- including the reception -- from months before the wedding until the actual wedding day. Having every task detailed will make it easier to figure out how much you have to do and how much you can put off until later so you can enjoy your engagement.

Instructions

1. Write a list about what you have to do immediately after getting engaged. If you have a long engagement, you can wait to start on this list - it should be accomplished at least one year before your wedding date. Include setting a wedding date, writing a guest list and determining your budget in this list. Remember, you'll need to write a guest list before setting a budget - the number of people you want at your wedding will determine your budget. Also, you may opt to have your engagement announcement printed in your local newspaper.

2. Create a checklist for everything that needs to be accomplished at least nine months before the wedding date. The following items should be included: booking vendors, including your photographer and videographer, caterer, florist and officiant; asking friends and family to be members of your bridal party; determining your wedding colors and choosing bridesmaid dresses; purchasing wedding rings; planning your honeymoon; and purchasing your wedding gown.

3. Write down everything that needs to be accomplished six months before the wedding. Included on the list should be choosing the music for your ceremony and reception, finalizing the prenuptial agreement, starting pre-marriage counseling, ordering invitations, signing up for a gift registry and sending your save-the-dates.

4. Make a checklist that includes everything that should be accomplished four months before your reception, including sending your wedding announcement to your local newspaper, ordering wedding programs, finding tuxedos for the groomsmen, booking transportation for the wedding day, securing blocks of hotel rooms, choosing a wedding cake and a groom's cake, planning the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner and ordering wedding favors.

5. Breakdown the final three months of the wedding. Three months before the wedding, you should discuss the specifics of the ceremony with your officiant; make final changes to the guest list; purchase your toasting glasses, cake knife, garter and guest book as well as bridal party gifts; write your wedding vows and send invitations. Two months before the wedding, your checklist should include having a hair and makeup consultation, getting your wedding license, having a dress fitting, finalizing your plans with vendors, completing name change documents and booking your hotel room for the wedding night. One month before the wedding you'll want to finalize all of the wedding details as well as create a seating chart.

6. Detail exactly what you have to do during the hectic weeks before the wedding. You'll need to pick up your wedding gown, have the groomsmen attend a final tuxedo fitting, attend the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner, get a manicure, arrange tip envelopes for your vendors and bring decorations to the reception hall. On the day of your wedding, you'll likely want to have your hair and makeup professionally done and schedule enough time to prepare for the ceremony and reception.

Use Thinning Shears On Bangs

Using thinning shears on bangs is an inexpensive way to maintain your haircut. Thinning shears create the trendy, pieced look. Try using thinning shears to cut your own bangs and saving yourself money.

Instructions

1. Have an idea of what style you'd like to create beforehand. Look in magazines or online of bang styles that you like.

2. Wash and dry your hair. Dry hair gives you a better idea of how short you're cutting it. Wet hair is generally longer than short hair. It can give you an incorrect picture of how much you're cutting.

3. Part your hair where you would normally part it.

4. With a comb, measure halfway down your hair shaft. This is the best place to start.

5. With swift motions, used the thinning shears to snip the hair shaft. After a few cuts, step back and reassess.

6. For pieced bangs, only cut halfway down the shaft, moving up if you want them to be shorter. For longer, sleeker bangs, only cut near the very end of the shaft.

Rolex Submariner Date Problems

After the crown knob is screwed tight, the watch can be worn.

The Rolex Submariner watch can be worn underwater, and displays the current time and date. Once the watch is strapped to your wrist, you might experience problems setting the date.

Date Setting

If you have trouble setting the date, pull out the crown knob (on the right edge of the watch) to its first position. Twist the knob clockwise to advance the day until the current date is reached. Twisting the knob counterclockwise is ineffective. Push the knob back into the watch.

Date Roll Over

If the date rolls over at noon instead of midnight, pull the knob out to its last position. Note that the date rolls over at midnight and advance or roll the time back to the correct time. For example, if you want to set the clock for 2 p.m., twist the knob forward until the date changes to the correct date, advance the time forward 12 hours from 00:00 a.m. and set the time forward to 2 p.m. Push the knob in.

Final Position

If you set the date and worry that the watch isn't sealed properly, push the crown knob in completely and screw it tightly clockwise against the watch. This makes the watch pressure-proof for 330 feet.

Hairstyles For Thinning Hair On The Forehead

Hide the thinning hair

Men and women usually start balding slightly at some point in their lives. Some are early, some later and others never bald at all. Whether thinning hair is caused by genetics, a disease or simply just stress, you shouldn't have to feel uncomfortable leaving home because of your hair. There are all sorts of hairstyles and techniques you can use to help hide thinning hair or balding.

Side Part

Parting your hair on the side can help hide thinning hair. The side part not only shapes your face, but can flow whichever way best hides the thinning. Part your hair on the side that has the least balding so your thickest hair can flow over to the side with the thinnest hair.

Layers

Layers help to create a thicker look. Start the layers closer to the top of your head to make the hair near the scalp look healthy and plentiful.

Mohawk

This hairstyle is made for people with short or thinning hair. Take the excess hair on the sides and use hair gel to bring it all to the middle of your head. Keep applying gel until most of the hair from the side is pulled up into a straight line that points upwards on top of the head. This hairstyle is a more modern way to hide balding.

Bristle Brush and Blow Dry

When you blow dry your hair, turn your hair upside down. This will give it more body and lift the hair near the roots, creating a fuller look near the scalp. Use a bristle brush with many fine bristles. This style brush will also make your hair fuller and more shapely while hiding thinning spots. Don't comb your hair backwards when it is wet, which can make it weaker and cause it to break more easily.

Products and Poof

Use hair gel or hairpray to style your hair where there is thinning. Products will help to mold the existing hair over the thinning areas. Style your hair in a poof on top of your head. This will not only be stylish, but will hide whatever is going on underneath. Use bobby pins to pin the poof in place. Wearing your hair up or down is optional after the poof is set.

Adjust A Toutliner Clipper Blade

The Andis T-Outliner is used by professional barbers for trimming facial hair. With repeated use, the blades will move a little out of place and will need to be oiled and re-adjusted. You'll need to adjust your T-Outliner clipper if you hear a grating noise when the device is turned on. The blade will also drag through hair growth and give an uneven cut as if it is blunt. Re-adjusting your clipper blade takes a little time and can be done quickly with practice.

Instructions

1. Turn off your T-Outliner Clipper and remove the cord from the mains.

2. Remove the two screws holding the blade housing to the clipping with a screwdriver. Take apart the top blade and the bottom blade of the blade set. Remove leftover hair and grime from both blades with a clipper brush.

3. Take off the two inner screws on the lower blade with a screwdriver. Remove a brown felt piece from the lower blade. Wipe both blades and the felt piece with a dry cloth, then a cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol.

4. Put back the brown piece in the lower blade. Slide in the top blade and adjust the relative positions of the blades and brown piece to give the clipper blade your preferred sharpness. Screw back the inner screws.

5. Re-attach the blade set to the body of the T-Outliner clipper. Put in the outer screws to secure the blade.

6. Turn on the T-Outliner clipper. Spread a thin film of lubricant oil across the teeth of the blade with an oil applicator.

Make A Crazy Hairstyle

Every once in a while you just need a crazy hairdo. Crazy hair day at school. Costumes and plays all give you a reason to do something a little different. This is as easy as a ponytail but add some crazy height.

Instructions

1. Brush all the tangles out of the hair. Brush from above and also from underneath. Put your head upside down and really brush it! I do not recommend washing immediately before as the hair is more fly away.

2. Take your hair and carefully pull it up over your head as if you were going to put a ponytail right smack on the top of your head. This position is important so your do doesn't slide around.

3. At this point take your Dixie cup or other cone like item and put it wide side down on the direct top of your head in the middle of all your hair you pulled up.

4. Now take the hair band and make a pony tail tie right at the top of the cup. This way your hair is piled into a cone on the top of your head. Make sure to hide the cup with your hair.

5. Add ribbons or hair paint maybe even a flower right at the top. This looks really strange up close just like a cone head!

Get 360 Waves After Using An S Curl Texturizer

Give your hair the soft look of 360 waves.

360 waves are a popular look for men with low cut African American hair. The style gives the appearance of a wave pattern on your hair. The process of getting natural 360 waves can be very time consuming and requires a lot hair brushing, but the use of an S-curl texturizer helps speed up the wave pattern process. The chemicals in S-curl texturizers help loosen your natural hair's curl and make it more manageable, therefore making it easier to create the 360 waves style.

Instructions

1. Put on your latex gloves. Dip the comb into the container of S-curl texturizer. Use the spine of the comb to scoop up a quarter-sized amount of the texturizer. Spread the texturizer onto your hair using the comb in the direction you want your wave pattern to be. Start at the sides and back of your head, then work your way up towards the crown and front. Spread more texturizer onto your hair as needed.

2. Comb the texturizer through your hair until you start to see an "S" or wave pattern develop in your hair. Rinse the texturizer out of your hair with warm water. Once the texturizer has been completely rinsed out, wash your hair with the neutralizing shampoo. You may need to repeat the shampoo process a few times to make sure that all of the texturizer is out of your hair. Apply hair conditioner and rinse it out after about five minutes.

3. Towel-dry your hair and apply hair moisturizer all over your hair. Set a warm towel over your head to help the moisturizer melt into your hair. Brush your hair out starting at the crown of your head. Brush the hair at the crown and front of your head in a forward direction and the hair at the back of your head in a downward direction. Brush the hair at the sides of your head forward and down in the direction of your cheeks. Continue brushing your hair in this manner for 10 minutes. Tie your hair down with a do-rag.

4. Wear the do-rag to bed to help set the 360 wave pattern. Do not brush your hair out when you remove the do-rag, as it will undo your hair's wave pattern. Repeat Step 3 every day to help maintain the look of your 360 waves.

Cute Haircuts For Preteens

Choose a haircut that is easy to style.

Preteens are at a time of transition. No longer a child, but not yet a teen, they are learning about themselves and their personal style. Cute haircuts for preteens should be easy to take care of and maintain. The right haircut, for both boys and girls, will work with the preteen's natural hair type, and the amount of time they are willing to put into hair styling.

Short and Spiky

A cute haircut for preteen boys is short and spiky. It is perfect for all hair types, from straight to curly. For this haircut, the hair is sheared short on the sides and back. The top of the hair is longer and layered. To style it, preteen boys just need to use gel or hair wax to make the spikes.

Graduated Bob

A graduated bob is lovely on preteen girls. It is a modern version of the classic bob. The difference is that the graduated bob is shorter in the back and longer in the front. The stylist will cut layers throughout the hair, shorter in back and longer layers in the front. Depending on hair type, the graduated bob is relatively easy to style. If the hair is curly, preteens may need to straighten their hair with a flat iron.

Long Layers

For preteen girls with long hair, layers will add movement and volume. The layers in front should start at just below the chin and go all the way down. This will frame the face. Get long layers cut into the back and sides of the hair. This cute haircut is suitable for both curly and straight locks. Bangs are optional but also work well with the haircut.

Long and Texturized

A trendy preteen boy's haircut is long and texturized. This haircut is ideal for wavy hair. The back of the hair is left long. It goes just past the ears. Add layers throughout the hair. The hairstylist cuts the top and front of the hair so it lays flat and sweeps across the forehead.

50s Style Pinup Hairstyles

The 1950s pin-up hairstyles used bows and flowers to accent curls.

The pin-up girls of the 1950s were called rockabilly girls. One such pin-up star during this time was Bettie Paige who frequently styled her hair in classic curls. The different hairstyles of 1950s pin-up girls allowed them to show off volume and shine as well as add accents like flowers and bows. The looks were classy as well as cute. Today, with curling irons and serums, these classic hairstyles require less work while still achieving that authentic 1950s pin-up girl look.

Short Bangs

The pin-up girls of the 1950s had very short, curled bangs. They achieved this look by cutting bangs on the eyebrow. Letting the hair air dry until slightly damp, you add a serum to smooth the hair then use a barrel brush to curl the bangs underneath. Adding heat with a hairdryer, continue curling the bangs under with the barrel brush. Create a tighter curl with a smaller barrel brush and firmly hold the hair with the bristles. Rollers also work for adding a curl to the bangs. Once hair is dry, curl the hair around the roller and pin in place, waiting a half hour to an hour before removal.

The Flower Part

Along with curls, pin-up girls in the 50s also liked to part their hair to one side, then pin a large flower such as a hibiscus to the flat part of their hair. First, you part the hair to the side, then you add a serum to the hair to achieve a smoothed down look. In the 50s, women used to roll hair in curlers overnight. Now you can use curlers or a curling iron, creating curls to one side. With bobby pins, you push the hair flat on the other side, then pin the flower on the flat side.

High Rise Pony Tail

With a curled bang, the pony tail of the rockabilly pin-up girl sat high at the back of their head, fastened with a bow or flower. The pony tail was often one long curl or a bunch of soft loose curls. Today you can add shine with a bit of gloss to smooth down the fly-aways and make your hair sparkle. Use curlers to curl the pony tail or curl it with a large curling iron.

The Swirl

Another look for the 1950s pin-up girl was the swirl. After curling hair entirely, the hair was sectioned off at the top, taking the top section at the forehead and twirling it around in a swirl curl, then pinning to the very top of the crown. Next, girls pinned the other sections on the sides to the back, letting the curls fall in the back, or they pined to one side and added a flower to the opposite side.

Long Shag Haircuts For Curly Hair

Rock a shag haircut to accentuate your waves or curls. Shag haircut layers reduces frizz, lightens your hair and controls your curls. Select shoulder length styles or longer to build volume and add a sexy element to your long hairstyle. Achieve the hottest style using frizz controlling hair products, a round brush, curling iron and blow dryer.

Long and Layered

Some of the most visible celebrities are sporting the long shag haircut. Some stars add hair extensions to lengthen their locks past their shoulders while others are sporting naturally long hair.

Cut long, shaggy layers into your curly or wavy hair. Add medium length layers to your crown with layers getting longer as your hair cascades down your back. Your bangs should be long, around cheekbone length, and layered.

Style this cut using a quarter sized amount of frizz controlling gel on wet hair. Brush the gel through your hair to cover every strand. Scrunch layers and bangs while letting hair to air dry. Use a blow dryer on a low setting with a diffuser if you don't have time to wait for it to air dry. Tip your head upside down and scrunch your layers as you hit them with the dryer. Stand up, brush through your long shag and spritz it with hairspray when it's dry. Scrunch your waves and curls and allow the hairspray to set. Push your hair over to one side and comb with your fingers.

Curly Shag with Bangs

Create a romantic curly style that allows you to keep your bangs. Cut medium and long layers throughout your hair. Bangs should be layered and cut to hit the tip of your nose when wet.

Spray a copious amount of volume building conditioning spray into your roots while hair is wet. Pull the top layers upward and scrunch with your hands. Roll your bangs around your large round brush and blow dry. Allow the rest of your hair to air dry or add the diffuser to your dryer and blow dry your hair on a low setting while scrunching your hair.

Use the curling iron to add an adorable flip to your curls. Rub a dime sized amount of pomade between your hands and run your fingers through the crown of your hair and pull upward. Shake your curls with your pomade covered fingers.

Razor Cut Shag

Bring layers and curls toward your face to frame your features with a long razor cut shag. Thin your tresses before adding layers. Make razor cuts around your face and cut the length so that it's slightly shorter in front and gradually gets longer in back. This style looks great with or without bangs so go with your personal choice.

Add a quarter sized amount of pomade to wet hair to keep frizz under control. Brush your hair toward your face then brush it down. Wind sections of hair around a large round brush and blow dry. Point the brush toward your face and pull the brush toward your face and outward as your blow dry.

Spritz your hair with moisturizing conditioning spray and scrunch your layers to enhance curls. Let the spray dry, then lightly spritz with hairspray and run your fingers through your hair.

Black Hair Style Ideas

Black Hair Styling Art

The uniqueness of African American hair can be troubling to under-skilled hairstylists or to those who are not knowledgeable about the tight curl of African American hair texture. Permanent relaxers help to straighten coarse hair, making it more manageable and easier to style. There are many styles that you can achieve maneuvering black hair.

Weaves

There are a number of styles that can be achieved with weaves alone. Weaves are meant to appear natural and be free-flowing for the purpose of versatility in styling. A nondetachable weave is highly preferred but can be very expensive. Hair is tightly braided underneath so that the weave appears smooth and tracks are invisible. There are also weave ponytails that are available in a variety of hair colors and textures. Lace front weaves have also become very popular because of their easy application. They are very similar to traditional weaves, also allowing versatility and personalized styling. Hair textures of weaves vary, literally transforming black hair into Chinese, Indian or Malaysian textures.

Braids

Braids can take away the stress of maintaining African American hair for months at a time. There are a number of variations to braids. Braids can be created using human or synthetic hair. There are box braids, micro braids, goddess braids, snake braids, among many others. Micro braids are the most expensive because they are microscopic in size and allow the most versatility. These braids can be easily styled like weaves.

Locks

Locks are a lovely alternative to traditional styling but take a more permanent position. Locks can be colored, cut and styled but the matted form of dead hair will be irreversible. Locks are becoming increasingly popular and more mainstream as many black women begin to embrace their heritage and African culture.

Twists

There are natural twists and synthetic twists. Natural twists are a great style for black natural hair and, when taken out, leaves hair loosely curled. Kinky twists can last as long as braids ranging between three to six months depending on the texture of black hair.

Signature Afro

Originating in the 1960s, Afros represented more than just a great hair style. Afros made statements about self-empowerment and political change. As time progressed, Afros have become more versatile in the 21st century and now make a fashion statement. They can be loosely curled, colored or kinky but overall, Afros are a great black hair style that is free of restrictions and has very little limitation.

Create A Halfup Updo

Create a Half-Up Updo

The "half-up" hairstyle is becoming the latest trend in easy-to-do updos. It works for a casual day look, an elegant evening hairstyle or just a quick fix for bad hair days.

Instructions

Creating the Updo

1. The "half-up" updo works best if your hair is at least shoulder length. Some layering in the hair adds interest, but isn't necessary.

2. For best results, you should attempt this updo on hair that is clean but not freshly washed. Squeaky clean hair will likely be too slippery to stay put, so wash your hair the night before or, for an evening event, simply restyle your hair from its day style without re-washing.

3. On dry hair, brush your hair straight back with a Mason Pearson or bristle brush (see resources). Make sure there are no tangles in your hair. If your hair is a little frizzy you can distribute a small dab of shine serum through your hair to tame the frizz.

4. Use the brush to back comb the top layers of your hair. Don't over do it-you're just creating a light cushion and a little lift at the roots.

5. Smooth this back-combed hair with the brush until the top layers are smooth again but the light cushioning remains. To avoid undoing the cushion in this updo, simply skim the top hair back off your face and don't brush all the way to the scalp.

6. Now grab a section of hair at each temple and sweep it back off the face. Use a barrette or a small elastic to secure the hair at the back of the head. In reality, this hairstyle is more like ? up and ? down. To keep it looking trendy, don't sweep too much back off the face-just the very top layers.

7. If you're hair is layered, pull out a few pieces around the face to create soft wisps to complete this updo.

Alternate Styling Option

8. If you want to give your straight hair some big, sexy waves, try setting your hair in hot rollers before creating this updo.

9. Wrap 2-inch sections in alternating sizes of hot rollers, rolling the hair back off the face. Secure each roller well.

10. Allow the rollers to cool completely before removing them. Carefully unwind the hair from the rollers, trying to maintain the shape of the curl as much as possible.

11. For more defined curls, coat your fingers with a small dab of styling wax and separate the curls. For a more tousled look, flip your head upside down and shake out the curls with your hands.

12. You are now ready to begin styling your hair using the above instructions.

Make Ladies African Headwraps

An African headwrap is a versatile accessory.

Brightly colored headwraps are traditionally worn by women throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. Some American women of African descent also wear these headwraps as a tribute to their ancestral culture. African women often wear dresses made of the same material as their headwraps, while African-American women often wear headwraps as a unique complement to their Western clothes. African headwraps are simply made of a long rectangle of cloth that the wearer skillfully wraps around her head and uses to cover every inch of her hair.

Instructions

Sew a Headwrap

1. Wash, dry and iron the African-print cotton fabric you have selected.

2. Measure 13 inches by 36 inches with a yardstick and cut out the rectangle shape in the fabric.

3. Fold over the edges of the rectangle 1/2 inch. Then fold them in half on the inside so that there are no visible raw edges. Pin in place. Sew the edges down.

Tie a Headwrap

4. Lay the headwrap's rectangle of cloth down flat with wrong side up. Take two of the short ends, lay the flat edge on the nape of your neck and tie the two ends on the crown of your head. The rest of the cloth should flow down freely from your neck.

5. Fold the left side of the rectangle further than where your hair's center part would be. Do the same with the right side of the rectangle, overlapping where your hair's center part would be.

6. With your hands, twist the headwrap to the left, starting at the long, free edge of the cloth. You can do this yourself or have someone else help you. This will create a twisted tube of cloth.

7. Bring the cloth tube upward and carefully and tightly coil it around your head. Neaten or even it up as you go along as necessary. Tuck the end of the cloth into the top of the wrap.

Make A Christmas Tree Topper Bow

Ribbons and bows are traditional tree toppers.

Bows make great Christmas tree toppers because they invoke the spirit of giving. The custom of decorating Christmas trees dates back to 1600s Germany. The first Christmas trees were decorated with handmade ornaments, candles and sweets. Christmas tree topper bows were made of ribbon. Ribbons adorn everything from clothing to trees since 1700s France. Wire-edge or velvet ribbon produces the best tree topper bows and is available in many colors and patterns. If the bow is for outside display, select ribbon made specifically for outdoors. Create your Christmas tree topper bow by following these simple, yet easy instructions.

Instructions

1. Cut 4 yards of ribbon.

2. Place the ribbon on a flat surface and loop in zigzag pattern. Make three 18-inch loops and one 13-inch loop. Leave 4 inches for the tail, and cut the second tail evenly with first tail.

3. Gather the ribbon in the center and pinch it tightly.

4. Wrap wire around the center and securely twist in the back.

5. Tug the tails downward and lay it flat. Pull the small loop to the middle and fluff it with fingers.

6. Gently shape and arrange large loops.

Make Jheri Curls

Make Jheri Curls

The Jheri curl, also spelled "Jerry" curl by many, is a hairstyle that was created in the early 1980's by a professional hairstylist named Jheri Redding. The Jheri curl quickly became a popular hairstyle amongst African Americans, including celebrities like Michael Jackson, Rick James, and Eddie Murphy. The style does not require a lot of maintenance. All you have to do is keep the curls moisturized and get a "touch up" every two months. You can purchase a Jheri curl kit from most local beauty supply stores.

Instructions

1. Use a rat-tail comb to part your hair into four sections. To do this, make a part down the center of your hair from front to back. Make another part in the center that extends from ear to ear.

2. Apply the softening creme from the Jheri curl kit onto the four sections of hair. Allow the creme to sit on your hair for the specified amount of time that is indicated on the product label. Because most Jheri curl kits contain "Lye", it is very important that you don't leave the creme on your hair past the recommended time. Doing so can result in severe hair loss or breakage.

3. Rinse the creme from your hair with lukewarm water. Wash and shampoo your hair with the neutralizing shampoo that came with the creme. Towel dry your hair.

4. Start rolling your hair with the perm rods, beginning at the nape of your neck and working your way to the front. Only put a small amount of hair on each rod. Be sure to cover each hair rod with rod paper.

5. Squirt the kit's permanent wave solution onto your hair that has been rodded. Spray enough of the solution to ensure that all of the rodded hair is drenched.

6. Cover your rodded hair with a plastic shower cap. Sit with your hair covered for the amount of time specified on the packaging. Generally, this will be 15 to 30 minutes.

7. Rinse the permanent wave solution out of your hair with lukewarm water. This is done while the rods are still in your hair.

8. Squirt the kit's neutralizing solution over your rodded hair. Allow the solution to sit for 5 minutes. Rinse the neutralizer from your hair with lukewarm water.

9. Use a towel to blot the excess water from your rodded hair. Remove the perm rods from your hair.

10. Apply a quarter sized drop of Jheri curl activator into your hands. Place the activator onto your hair. Be sure to rub it in so that it saturates the curls. Spray your curls with Jheri curl moisturizer to give it moisture.

11. Use a wide tooth rake comb or pic to style your Jheri curl.

The Best Hairstyles For Straight Short Hair And A Fat Face

Layered hairstyles look great with round faces.

If you are looking for a hairstyle that will flatter a round or fat face, remember that you want a hairstyle that will make your face look slimmer. Especially for straight hair, a short, layered look can provide movement and break up the roundness of the face. Short hairstyles for round faces shouldn't be too short, though, because too little hair can emphasize the roundness of your face and make your face look unbalanced.

Do You Have a Fat Face?

Fat faces, also called round faces, are as wide as they are long. To determine whether you have a round face shape, you can either trace your face in the mirror with lipstick or measure your face. Measure the width of your face at three points. First, measure the width at the forehead, halfway between your eyebrows and hairline. Then, measure across the top of your cheekbones at the widest point of your face. Finally, measure across your jawline. Next, measure the length of your face from your hairline to your chin. Compare your width measurements and your length measurement. If your face is as wide as it is long, then you have a round face shape.

Short Hairstyles for a Fat Face

For a round or fat face, short hairstyles look best when there are layers breaking up the shape of the face. A short bob with layered bangs and feathery pieces around the cheeks is very slimming on a round face because the layers break up the shape of the face. Straight hair is especially suited for layers because layers give straight hair volume and movement. For very short styles, a pixie cut with long pieces around the ears, neck and forehead can also flatter a round face.

Medium-Short Hairstyles for a Fat Face

If your hair is not quite short enough for a pixie cut or bob, you can also get a flattering hairstyle by using layers. The length of a layered hairstyle that looks best on a round or fat face is between the chin and the neck. The hair should fall forward around the face. For longer straight hair, layered bangs that fall diagonally over the forehead can flatter a round face by breaking up the face shape and providing some visual movement to the hair. Even if your hair is long, getting layers that fall around the face will help your round face look slimmer.

Height Is Important for Round Faces

Another trick for lengthening and slimming a round or fat face is to have a hairstyle with some height. Hair with height elongates the face, making it appear slimmer and changing the shape from round to oval. With straight hair, this means adding volume to the crown of the head with layers or hair products that provide volume. A great cut for women with round or fat faces is a diagonal bob that is short at the back and angles forward to fall between the chin and neck. This hairstyle is cut high in the back and usually adds height and volume to the crown of the head.

Haircuts For Girls With Long Hair

Haircuts for Girls With Long Hair

There are thousands of different haircuts for girls with long hair. Long hair leaves so much room for different trimming and styling techniques that the possibilities are truly endless. It also tends to look adorable on girls of any age and with any face shape. However, remember that the longer your hair is, the more tangles you will have. Keep the cut shorter than waist length for the best results. Hair longer than waist length not only develops terrible tangles, it often ends up getting sat on.

Basics

Long hair is usually trimmed in one of three different styles. It can be trimmed straight across in a sharp line, in an oval with a gentle line or in a "V" with a sharp or gentle line. These three different styles can then be paired with an assortment of bangs, layering and shaping to create any look.

Natural

A natural haircut works for straight, wavy or curly long hair. Cut the ends in a gentle oval shape, with the hair in the middle of the back slightly longer than the hair at the sides. If you want some bangs, cut them medium-length and side-swept. If you need a little extra definition, use some light layering around the head. If you do get layering, remember that it can make ponytails, pigtails and braids look a little messy.

Clean

To create a very clean and neat style for long hair, you must start with straight or wavy locks. Cut the ends straight across in a sharp line. The bulk of the hair should be, and remain, one length for this style to look good. Finish the style with some short, blunt bangs. This even cut is great for girls who like to wear their hair in sleek ponytails, pigtails or braids.

Carefree

A shaggy cut on straight, wavy or curly long hair gives a very carefree feel. Cut the hair in an oval or "V" shape. Taper the ends of the hair for a rough line and add heavy, shaggy layering around the head. Cut the bangs long and at a slight angle with shaggy layering. Though this style can be pulled up into pigtails, ponytails and braids, the uneven layering creates a very rough look.

Urban

For a long girl's haircut with an urban feel, try some angles and choppy layering. Cut the hair at the back of the head in a "V" with a sharp line. Use heavy, angled layers across the head with a gradually shorter line as the side hair gets closer to the front. Trim the bangs in an inverted circle, with the hair in the middle of the forehead shorter than the hair at the sides. Add some choppy layers to the bangs to help blend them in with the rest of the style. Though this cut works for ponytails and pigtails, it tends to look terrible when braided.

Make Hollywood Style Birthday Cakes

Make a Cake Fit for a Star

A Hollywood birthday party theme is suitable for kids, teens or adults. After sending out glitzy invitations and selecting glamorous decorations, it is time to turn the focus to the ever-important birthday cake. There is a Hollywood-style birthday cake to suit every personality, from the wannabe superhero to the aspirant filmmaker to the family diva. All that is needed is a dash of originality, a spoonful of effort, and a heaping cup of affection.

Instructions

Walk of Fame Cake

1. Bake two 8-inch by 8-inch square cakes. Evenly cut all four corners off of one cake so that a diamond shape remains.

2. Discard or put away the diamond shaped piece. Place the four cut corners around the edge of the remaining square cake to form a star.

3. Make sugar cookie dough and form a round, flat cookie several inches in diameter. Place a child's hand in the dough to make a hand imprint. Bake the cookie as directed.

4. Frost the cake with your choice of frosting. Place the cookie in the middle of the cake.

5. Write "Happy Birthday" and the name of the birthday person on the cake using a tube of icing. Try to write in a fancy script.

Clapper Board Cake

6. Bake a 13-inch by 9-inch sheet cake in the flavor of your choice. Allow it to cool completely and remove it from the pan.

7. Cut a 2 to 3-inch slice off one of the long sides of the cake. Set the cake on a platter or large cake board. Set the large cake straight on the board. Set the sliced piece at a 45-degree angle to the large cake.

8. Frost all of the cake with black or dark brown frosting. Use white frosting to draw diagonal lines on both the thin slice of cake and a 2 to 3-inch edge of the large cake adjacent to the smaller piece.

9. Write "Happy Birthday" in white icing on the black area of the cake. Use a spatula or your fingertip to smear the lettering so that it has a chalk-like appearance.

Sharpen Professional Hair Scissors

Keeping beautician scissors sharp is essential to properly cutting hair. When the scissors are sharp, they will cut the hair better and not leave jagged ends. When the scissors are dull, they can "tear" the hair leaving it looking frayed and frizzy at the ends. Professional hair scissors can be extremely expensive ($400 and more); instead of buying a new pair when the old ones dull, learn to sharpen the scissors to continue receiving great cuts while saving money.

Instructions

1. Open the scissors blades. Hold the sharpening stone in one hand and place the edge of one of the blades against the stone.

2. Strike the blade, carefully and slowly, forward and diagonally against the stone.

3. Move the scissors from the point of the blade forward to the pivot, not back and forth. Always move the blade against the stone and away from your body.

4. Place the second blade onto the stone and repeat the sharpening process.

5. Open and close the scissors quickly. This will discard stone shavings from the blade.

6. Run a damp paper towel over the blades to wipe them clean, then run a dry paper towel over the blades to dry them.

7. Test the sharpness of blades by simply cutting a line on a piece of paper.

Look closely at the cut on paper: If the paper is cut with ease and the line is perfectly straight and clean, the scissors are sharpened properly. If the paper has to be cut with slight pressure or the line is jagged, the scissors are not properly sharpened and need to be resharpened.

Sexy Formal Hairstyles

Perhaps you are going to a black tie event, such as a wedding, a show at the theater or for cocktails at a chic bar. Turn heads with an eye-catching look and a sexy hairstyle. From up-do's to loose, flowing locks, this built-in accessory can alter your look and give you a dramatically beautiful appearance.

Side Pony

A side pony is a playful yet sexy way to wear your hair for a formal event. To achieve this look, start by spraying dry hair with texturizing spray. Part your hair to one side. Back comb the top half and smooth it down with a brush. Loosely gather your hair into a ponytail at the nape of your neck on the opposite side from where your hair parts. For example, if you part your hair on the right, create a ponytail on the left side. Secure the ponytail with elastic. Allow a few tendrils to fall from the ponytail and frame your face. Add a large flower or a decorative clip to give the look more appeal.

High Bun

A bun is often thought of as a formal hairstyle and it can be sexy, too. Create a sexy bun by backcombing dry hair to give it volume. Smooth out your hair with a brush and gather on the crown of your head to create a high ponytail--secure it with elastic. Twist the hair that hangs from the ponytail and wrap it around the elastic--forming a bun. Use bobby pins to hold the bun in place. You can either leave the style unadorned to give it a simple, yet elegant look, or add rhinestone bobby pins or a clip.

Loose Tendrils

Hair that is worn loose can be just as formal and sexy as hair that is worn up. To create a carefree, yet sexy look, start by adding moose to damp hair and blow dry it thoroughly. Create curls in straight hair or add definition to curly hair with a wide-barrel curling iron. Separate your hair into small sections. Twist each section and wrap it around the curling iron. When you remove the iron, you will be left with ringlet curls. Once all of your hair has been curled, flip your head upside down and gently shake it to loosen up the curls. Add a finishing spray to hold the curls in place.

Make A Neck Wrap With Cooler Beads

Make a Neck Wrap With Cooler Beads

Summers are starting to get hotter, and some people enjoy being outdoors, regarless of the heat. These people need a way to stay cool, and one of the best ways is by cooling down the back of the neck. This will help drop the temperature of the entire body, therefore reducing the risk of heat stroke. Cooling neck wraps are great for construction workers, people working at fairs, outdoor lifeguards and other workers who get very hot at their jobs.

Instructions

Make a Neck Wrap With Cooler Beads

1. Cut a strip of material that is about three feet long and about four inches wide. You can use any print you like, as long as the material is cotton. This will allow water to soak into the material to wet the cooler beads and allow excess moisture to come out of the beads and the cloth.

2. Fold the material in half lengthwise and sew up one short end and the long side. Be sure the material is folded so the "good," or right, side of the material is folded in on itself. After the sewing is finished, turn the tube of material inside out, so the "good" side is on the exterior of the tube and the seam is on the inside.

3. Sew the tube about six inches from the closed end to leave a section of the neck wrap for tying. Pour about two to three tablespoons of cooler beads into the tube. Sew up a portion of the tube six inches from the open end then sew that end closed.

4. Soak the neck wrap in cold water for about 15 minutes. If you want a very cold neck wrap, soak it in ice water. The cooler beads will take on the water, causing them to swell and fill the tube. They will have a gel-like feel when they are full of water.

5. Remove the neck wrap from the water, place it on the back of the neck and enjoy. If you will be moving around, use the six inch ties on each end of the neck wrap to tie it to the neck. This will help secure the neck wrap as you move around.

Fix Hair Into Big Top Of Head Bun

It's easy to create a tight ballerina bun on top of your head.

Whether you want a somewhat "messy" bun that doesn't look too formal or a perfectly styled ballerina-type bun, both styles are easy to do yourself. Buns are a great choice for days when you simply don't want to put a lot of effort into a hairstyle. They look great for daytime tasks like school or work, or for a night out on the town.

Instructions

Messy Bun

1. Section off the front part of your hair and sweep to one side. This will create volume on your crown. Brush hair back using your fingers and a hair brush.

2. Secure your hair in a loose ponytail on top of your head. Pull the hair through the elastic, pushing it forward slightly to create more volume in the front of your hair.

3. Curl sections of your ponytail to create loose waves.

4. Secure the sections of your hair using bobby pins along your scalp. Vary where you pin your hair to create an unbalanced, messy bun.

Ballerina Bun

5. Dampen hair with water using a spray bottle.

6. Pull hair back and apply a small amount of gel. Pull hair into a high ponytail with a hair elastic, using a brush to smooth hair as you pull it back.

7. Twist the pony tail and shape it into a tight coil. Use hair pins to secure hair by sliding them from the outer part of the hair into the bottom of the bun.

8. Apply hair spray to make sure the bun and strands of hair stay in place.

Diy 80s Hairstyles

DIY 80s Hairstyles

The 1980s were dominated by creativity which was reflected in the hairstyles. Hair was big and bold for both men and women. The hairstyle was an integral part of the everyday look. Although hairstyles from the 80s may look complicated, they are actually very easy to recreate. Many 80s hairstyles will require some sort of gel or spray to keep the hair in place since so many styles forced the hair into unnatural positions.

Instructions

Women

1. Tease the hair. 'Big hair' was popular during that time, and teasing created that full look. To tease, hold a piece of hair and begin to comb it in reverse. Instead of inserting the comb into the strands of hair and pulling it downward, push the comb against the hair, upwards, to disturb the hair's natural order. Take another piece of hair and repeat the process. Lock the style in place with hairspray.

2. Gather your hair into a one-sided ponytail. A single ponytail, prominently placed on the side of the head was fashionable in the 1980s. Wrap a thick, ponytail holder or scrunchy, around the base of the ponytail to give the style some flair.

3. Add color to your hair with hair paint. Wearing multiple colors in your hair will give you an 80s look. The more different streaks of color, the better. After spraying hair paint on several sections of your hair, tease the hair.

4. Cut thick bangs on the front of the forehead, and tease them. Lock them in place with hairspray.

Men

5. Spike your hair. Pour a generous amount of gel in your hands, then push your hair up and out so it is sticking out everywhere. You can also form parts of your hair into spikes. This look was popular amongst punks and creative types, and often complimented with bright colors.

6. Cut your hair into a Mohawk. Shave or cut the hair from the left and right side of the scalp, leaving a single, middle row of hair. Force the middle row of hair to stand straight with gel.

7. Style your hair into a mullet. The mullet required that the sides and top of the hair remain short, or tapered, and the rest of the hair be allowed to grow down your back.

8. Keep all hair short on your head, except for a single rat tail on the base of the scalp, above the neck, which you will allow to grow long, down your back. The tail should be only a one to two inches wide. The rat tail style was influenced by the mullet.

Bun Hairstyle Ideas

The hair bun is a classic and elegant updo.

Hair buns are a simple and classic way to pull together any look. Ranging from the romantic messy bun to the modern high bun, there are many bun styles to choose from. Hair buns look great with both straight and curly hair and tend to work best with longer hair. However, if you have shorter hair, you can still create classic bun looks by simply clipping in hair extensions before styling a bun. You can also try using wrap-around hair pieces, which are designed to add volume and extend shorter ponytails.

The Romantic Messy Bun

If you want a romantic, carefree look, try out the messy bun. This style can be worn for either casual or formal events, depending on your accessories. The messy bun can either be placed near the crown or low on the nape. Placing the bun higher creates drama, while a lower bun has a more sultry look. To create this look, start by creating volume. If you hair isn't naturally wavy, take 1-inch sections of your hair and curl random pieces with a 1-inch curling iron. Loosen the curls with your fingers. Spritz with hairspray. If you have naturally wavy hair, simply apply a smoothing serum or anti-frizz serum throughout. Gather your hair into a ponytail and secure it with an elastic either at your crown or your nape, depending on your preference. Twist and wrap the ponytail around until you create a bun. Loop the ends into your elastic. If you hair is thick, secure another elastic around the bun. Leave the bun messy. Loosen a few face-framing pieces from the bun to soften the look. You can accessorize with a headband for a youthful style or a jeweled pin for a special occasion.

The Modern High Bun

The modern high bun is chic, sleek and adds instant drama to any look. This bun is placed at the crown, creating height and volume. More refined than the messy bun, the high bun works best with stick-straight hair. To get this look, straighten your hair in 1-inch sections with a flat iron. Apply a shine-enhancing serum throughout. Gather your hair in a high ponytail at or above your crown. The higher the bun, the more impact you will create. Secure the ponytail with an elastic. Twist the ponytail tightly around the center and secure with an elastic. Tuck in any stray strands with bobby pins. Slick back your hair with hair gel to create a smooth, sleek look. Spritz hairspray over the entire look to hold it in place. If you want a dramatic, voluminous, bun but don't have the long hair necessary for this look, simply clip in hair extensions before styling the bun or wrap a couple faux hair pieces around your natural bun to create the illusion of thick, long hair.

The Double Bun

For a fun, youthful and artistic look, try out the double bun style. To create the double bun, begin by parting your hair down the middle. Gather your hair and create two low ponytails. Secure the ponytails with elastics. Loosely wrap your right ponytail into a bun and secure with another elastic. Repeat this step with the left ponytail. Spritz hairspray all over to hold the style in place. Accessorize with a couple of jeweled barrettes if you wish.

Ways To Fix Long Hair

Long Hair

Long hair can provide many different styling options. Leave hair down and long, fix it into an updo, sleekly straighten it or style it into carefree curls. A ponytail is a standard style for long hair, but there are other ways to fix long hair as well. Create casual or formal styles easily with long hair.

Updos

Fix long hair into a stylish updo. An updo can be formal or casual. Pull hair back into a tight ponytail. Leave a fringe of hair around the face to soften the look or pull it all back into the ponytail. Twist the ponytail around itself and as you are twisting allow the ponytail to coil into a circle. Place bobby pins into the hair as you are coiling it. To create a formal updo, make sure that all of the hair is neatly pinned into the coil. To create a casual updo, allow some curls and tendrils of hair to escape the bobby pins to create a tousled look. Spray the hair well with hair spray.

Curls and Waves

Create a style with curls and waves. Blow-dry freshly washed hair so that it is straight and smooth. Heat the hot rollers. Separate the hair framing your face into two-inch sections. Roll each section on a medium-size hot roller away from your face. Separate the hair on the top, sides, and back into three-inch sections. Roll each section on a large-size hot roller in all different directions. Leave the hot rollers in the hair until they are cool. Remove the hot rollers and run your fingers through your hair to tousle the curls. Do not brush or comb through them. Spray hairspray all over to set the curls.

Down and Straight

Wear long hair down and straight. Blow-dry freshly washed hair with a flat brush. Pull small sections of hair taut with the brush and direct the blow dryer from the base of the hair to the tips. Part the hair straight down the center or in a zig-zag part, or pull bangs across the forehead in a side-swept style. Heat a straightening iron and use it to straighten small sections of hair by pulling it through the hair from the scalp to the tips of the hair. Spray hair with a finishing spray to calm any frizzy fly-away hairs.

French Braids

French-braid the hair by beginning with three small sections at the top of the head. Cross the left section over the middle section and cross the right section over the middle section. Add a small amount of hair from the loose hair near the left side of the braid to the left section and cross the left section over the middle section again. Add a small amount of hair from the loose hair near the right side of the braid to the right section and cross the right section over the middle section again. Continue braiding in this fashion, adding additional hair from the left and right sides each time until all of the hair has been French-braided. Place an elastic band into the hair to secure it.

Cute & Short Hairstyles For Teen Girls

Experimenting with hair is practically a rite of passage for teen girls. Hair can be used as a means for her to express herself or something she can do when she feels like she needs a change. Since hair grows--making every haircut temporary--there are tons of styles she can choose from that will be both cute and flirty. Consider letting her experiment with different styles by pinning her hair up or taking the advice of a hair stylist before she takes the plunge.

Before You Begin

Have her look through her favorite magazine, find pictures of her favorite celebrities or decide on a look she knows she wants. Take these examples to the hair stylist so there will be no questions or surprises on cut it. Consider face shape as well. Very short hairstyles don't always work on those with heart-shaped or round faces--girls with those kinds of faces should try for bobs instead of very short cuts.

Long Bangs

A bob is cute and simple, but long, side-swept bangs add a bit of drama. This is a style that suits a girl who usually parts her hair on the side or with thin hair. The side part will give her a bit of extra volume while the bangs in front add a hint of mystery.

Pixie Cut

A short layered cut looks great on those with long, slender faces and thin hair. This cut suits a girl who want a low-maintenance 'do--she'll simply step out of the shower and let it air dry. Blow-drying it, however, and adding a little bit of hairspray, will give it a little lift.

Bob with Heavy Bangs

A bob with heavy bangs is an option for those with larger facial features; it gives the bob cut some extra edge. As seen on the singing sensation "Lady Gaga", a chin-length bob with big chunky bangs gives those with oval and round faces a bit of a rockeresque vibe while still wearing a classic haircut.

The Boy Haircut

A boy-cut hair style (cut exactly like it sounds, to resemble a male haircut) can give a girl a much- needed change. This hairstyle is especially good for someone with hair that has been over processed with tons of dye and bleach products--a short hairstyle will get it back to its healthy roots. Consider teasing it a bit at the root to give it the appearance of a little extra volume. Don't forget to spritz with a little hairspray.

Short Hairstyles For Africanamericans With A Natural Crop Haircut

A woman with short, natural hair has plenty of options.

Short hair is becoming an increasingly popular style for black women. Pop stars and Hollywood actresses are beginning to crop their hair, and ordinary black women are following suit---often in defiance of cultural preferences for "weaved" or processed hair and family pressure to wear more conservative looks. "Natural" hair, or hair that has been untreated by chemicals, has experienced a similar renaissance, and the number of its devotees is growing. There are several beautiful ways to style African-American hair that is both natural and very short.

Decorate with a headwrap or a colorful scarf

Some women---especially those who are transitioning from chemically straightened hair to natural hair---choose a short-cropped style sometimes called a TWA (teeny weeny afro). While the hair is at its very shortest and growing out, they can "dress up" their style by wearing colorful headwraps and scarves. Those scarves can be purchased at many hair-care stores in African- or Caribbean-immigrant neighborhoods. They're also available at websites that specialize in hair-care products for black women.

Simple, elegant style

If your hair growth is as long as your thumb, you can use an elastic headband and pull it back, away from your forehead. Let it sit at the center of your head and tuck the hair under the bottom of the band, or simply let it flow back loose. A simple black elastic band is elegant, but you can choose a headband with a large flower or a bow. They can be thin or thick in width, and come in multiple colors so women can layer two or three if they wish.

Mini twists or Micro braids

If your hair is slightly longer, you can braid or twist it. Senegalese women are especially famous for their braiding technique. Some braided and twisted styles can be quite expensive and take hours to do. Be sure to find a reputable stylist who specializes in natural hair. If the braids are too tight, they can cause discomfort and break the hair. If they're too lose, they can look messy and come undone, wasting the time, money, and effort you put into your style.

Put In A Curly Perm

The beautiful, lush curls of a good perm make for a striking, enviable hairstyle. The look's versatility and easy maintenance make it a desirable style for many women. If you are thinking about trying to achieve this full-body look with a curly perm, there are some important tips to remember before embarking on this easy-to-achieve look.

Instructions

1. Buy a curly hair perm kit that is most appropriate for your hair type and texture. Find a kit that includes a pre-curl softening cream and hair cap.

2. Part your hair into sections with a dry comb. Open the small tube of curl activator and pour the solution into the larger squirt bottle container of curl gel. Wear the gloves provided and cover the cap of the squirt bottle with your forefinger. Shake vigorously until the perm solution has been mixed. Apply the pre-curl softening cream to your hair or gently coat your hair with Vaseline and allow to set for 10 minutes before applying the perm solution. Repart your hair into the same sections as before with a dry comb.

3. Wear the gloves provided with the kit (or a set of rubber gloves) and apply the perm solution from the squirt bottle into your palm. Gently rub the solution into your hair with your fingertips and massage the solution into separate pieces of your hair. Next, starting at the root, comb outwards and evenly, allowing the solution to set in your hair. For a deep-set curly perm, bring the perm solution all the way to the ends of your hair follicles. Apply the plastic cap (if provided) or shower cap over your hair and allow the solution to set for the recommend processing time on the kit. For thinner and finer hair, start off allowing the solution to process for only half the time recommended on the box kit.

4. Wash your hair evenly with warm water until the excess perm color is rinsed and the water runs clear. Repeat this process to insure your hair is fully clean. Depending on the quality of conditioner provided, apply your own separately purchased curly hair deep conditioner and allow the conditioner to set between five and 15 minutes (depending on your hair texture and type) under a hair or blow dryer. Blow dry your hair until lightly damp, then towel-dry. Spritz your hair with curling texturizer.

Solutions For Frizzy Thin Curly & Long Hair

Certain oil-based conditioners can contribute to hair frizziness.

Curly hair by definition is very delicate, especially when thin. This can cause breakage and frizziness that is all the more noticeable when hair is worn long. Some women are born with a predisposition to frizzy hair and elements such as the harsh sun, humidity, over-styling and over-processing can leave hair dry, frizzy and unmanageable. Gels, hairsprays and mousses with a high alcohol content also contribute to frizz.

Humidity

Hair swells and expands when wet or in a humid climate. To keep thin, frizzy, long curly hair from getting too big and frizzy, try a periodic conditioning treatment in a salon. This will reduce split ends and close cuticles, which is where water enters the hair shaft. Applying an at-home deep conditioning treatment is an alternative to the salon. Using a leave-in conditioner is also beneficial for this hair type--however do not saturate hair, as this can weigh it down. After blow drying, a serum can be applied to hair to manage it and keep the frizzies at bay. If hair is super frizzy, use serum on damp hair while blow drying. This will seal the cuticles, keeping water from causing hair to swell as it dries.

Washing and Conditioning

Frizzy curly hair should not be washed every day, according to the TargetWoman website. Shampooing strips hairs of natural oils that keep hair from frizzing. Shampoo also dries hair out, which promotes frizz. Thin, longer hair can break more easily, which is another reason to shampoo less often. Wash hair two or three times a week. Choose a shampoo and conditioner for hair thickness as well as for frizz reduction. Deep conditioner should be left on overnight if possible. Try sitting under a hood dryer or wrapping hair in a towel, which causes heat to seal in the conditioner. There is a wide array of products available for curly hair. Read labels to match product to your curly hair type. Clarifying shampoos can be used once a week to get rid of product buildup. TargetWoman also recommends regular use of a leave-in conditioner for this hair type.

Styling

Use a wide-tooth comb or fingers when styling this hair type. This will cause less breakage. Do not comb hair while wet, as it can stretch and break hair, promoting more frizz. Scrunching wet hair can also cause breakage; instead try blow drying (set on low) with a natural-bristled round brush. Plastic bristle hair brushes can cause frizziness on all curly hair types, however frizz is more prominent on thick hair after brushing. Avoid touching hair too often which can tangle it and cause frizzies. Overuse of styling products will dry out hair and promote frizz. Hair damaged from perming, bleaching and dying can also cause hair dryness and frizz.

Do Gradient Nails

A gradient effect is the gradual fading of one shade or color into another and serves as a stylish and colorful nail design. As professional as it may look, it can be done at home with a few basic nail supplies and polishes. The great thing about this nail design is that you can customize it to your liking; experiment with different colors, glitter polish or even add rhinestones or nail art stickers for extra glamor and shine.

Instructions

1. Apply one layer of base coat to clean, dry nails. Let the base coat completely dry.

2. Apply two coats of light-colored nail polish to nails. Wait about 5 minutes between coats and let dry for approximately 15 minutes.

3. Apply a coat of the dark-colored polish from the tip to about a quarter way down the length of your nail. Make sure to not paint any farther than this in order to create a strong gradient effect.

4. Apply a coat of the top coat polish to your nails while the dark polish is still wet. Make sure to paint inward toward your cuticles, all the way down the length of your nails. At this point, the top coat should be fading and blending the dark polish into the lighter one. Wait 20 to 30 minutes for your nails to completely dry.

5. Apply another coat of top coat polish to your nails to seal in your design and prevent chipping.

Hair Weave Styles For The Prom

Getting hair extensions weaved into your own hair is a great way to add length and body to your tresses. When styling your hair for prom, the extra hair resulting from the weaved extensions will give the stylist more to work with, therefore enhancing your style. Also, once prom is over, you can still rock your new, extended hairdo for weeks.

Twisty Braids

This is a great style for people with medium-length hair. The stylist will apply the weave to the underside of your hair, with most of the volume at the back. The extensions will usually be cut and styled afterwards, so it is best to prepare yourself for a long sitting. You can choose from either synthetic hair (which is cheaper and can look unnaturally shiny), or 100 percent human hair (which can cost hundreds of dollars, but looks natural and lasts longer).

After the weave is applied, pull your hair into a ponytail in the middle of the back of your head, but don't secure it with a hair tie. Twist all of the hair upwards, letting pieces spill out from the top of the twist in a waterfall effect. Secure the twist with bobby pins. Since your hair now has more weight because of the weave, you may need upwards of 50 bobby pins to fasten the twist. More bobby pins (as long as they are the same color as your hair) are better than excessive amounts of hairspray, since this can make hair look crusty and dull.

Once you have secured the twist, begin braiding the waterfall-like pieces from the bottom to the ends. Secure the ends of the braids with tiny, clear rubber bands as close to the ends as possible. The braids should be about a quarter-inch wide or smaller to get the twisty effect. The weave will make braiding much easier, since the added length will allow for longer braids and more flexibility. Once all of the waterfall-like hair is braided, take the end of one braid and twist it slightly. The braid will kink and create a twisty curl. Secure the end of the braid to the back of the crown of your head with a bobby pin. Repeat this for the rest of the braids, randomly pinning the braid twists around the crown of your head. To hide the ends of the braids, secure a vintage-style barrette or a medium-sized faux lily at the back of the crown of your head.

Vintage Side-Part

Once you get a weave, you might want to show off your long tendrils. An easy way to do this is by creating a vintage side-parted hairstyle with your hair cascading over one shoulder.

Apply a curl-enhancing cream or mousse to towel-dried hair. If you have naturally curly or wavy hair, this style requires less work. For straight hair, have a ceramic flat iron handy. Create an extreme side-part with a comb and blow dry the hair from the roots to the ends. If you have straight hair, use a wide, flat brush to curl the hair inwards towards your face. If you have curly hair, use a diffuser nozzle attached to the hair dryer. This will help to avoid frizz.

Once your hair is completely dry, pull all of your hair (including the weave) over your shoulder on the side the mass of your hair is. Clip the hair on the other side right behind your ear with a vintage barrette. Since you don't want your hair to flop down onto your back, secure the rest of it to about midway around the back of your head with bobby pins. If you have wavy hair, your style is complete. For straight hair, position the ceramic flat iron about a third of the way down your hair. Flipping your wrist in a circular motion, arc the flat iron upwards and around, twisting your hair around the barrels loosely. This will create a subtle wave. Finish off this style with a spritz of shine serum for a glossy, Hollywood finish.

Different Pin Up Hairstyles

Pin up hairstyles were popular from the 1930s to the 1950s.

Pin up hairstyles symbolize the timeless glamor of the 1930s to the 1950s. Those retro hairstyles were all about seductive and feminine curls.

Pin Curls

These simple styles of the 1940s were the most "stylish" pin up hairstyles, according to Hot1940sHairstyles.com. Get the look: Divide washed and air-dried hair into small sections, set each section in "pincurls" using bobby pins, and leave overnight. Finger comb your hair in the morning.

Rockabilly

Inspired by Betty Paige and the era of rock and roll, the rockabilly style is sporty and stylish. Get the look: Use hot rollers on damp hair, then backcomb the "inside of the front curls to create volume and pouf," recommends Hot1940sHairstyles.com.

Finger Waves

The finger waves made popular during the flapper period are still a favorite of celebrities and brides. Finger waves soften feminine facial contours and add an undeniable sophisticated touch.

Accessories

Accentuate your pin up hairstyle with accessories. Nothing about those hairstyles was demure; use oversize barrettes, floral clips, headbands, and wraps.

Considerations

Pin up hairstyles are labor-intensive. Expect perfection with practice. Tools and styling products are mandatory. Personalize and customize the styles for a unique look.

Short To Medium Haircuts For Round Faces

Choosing to wear your hair in a short or medium style is up to you. Just keep in mind that face shape is important when choosing the best hairstyle for yourself. If you've got a round face, you need to know what looks to gravitate toward and which to avoid.

Face Shape

If you're trying to decide if you have a round face, you can judge for yourself by looking at a few features. Round faces are widest at the ear and cheek level, and the length of the face is close, if not equal to, the width. If you have a round face, you'll have a rounded hairline and chin.

Short Styles

Now that you have determined your face shape, you can choose one of the many short styles that will look right on you. Hair can be cropped extremely short or have a longer, shaggy look.

Choose a short hairstyle that will frame the face with layers. Layers add softness and a slimming effect when styled at the sides of the face. If you choose to wear your short style curly, avoid curling near the sides of the face. Instead, curl the crown for a flirty lift.

Make sure you have fullness at the crown of the head to create height. This will give the illusion of a longer, slimmer face and therefore create a more flattering look.

Medium Looks

For medium hairstyles, you can wear your hair wavy or straight, but avoid one-length cuts. The most unflattering style on a round face is flat, one-length hair, with blunt straight bangs. With a few slight variations, this look can be turned into a sexy medium style.

Instead of blunt bangs that hang straight down into your eyes, shortening the face, go for long, layered bangs. With layered bangs you can wear them swept across the forehead or clipped back, when you want a more sleek look. Adding long layers to your hair will add movement and take out the bulky look of hair.

Make sure the only fullness you create in your hairstyle is in the crown of the head. Keep the sides slim and closer to the face. Long angled layers at the front of the face will create a sexy, face-framing look. Wear this style by leaving your hair down, or leave some loose tendrils when you pull your hair up in a sexy updo.

Haircuts For A Man With A Big Forehead

If you have a large or wide forehead, you can find haircuts that will flatter you. The key is to use your hair to draw attention away from your forehead. Wear your hair long or short, cut a variety of bangs and play with texture to achieve a more balanced look.

Bangs

Perhaps the best tool men have for minimizing a prominent forehead is bangs. Bangs cover a large forehead and draw attention to the haircut rather than to the forehead. There are endless ways to utilize bangs. Most men can pull off classic straight bangs, which should hang somewhere between the hairline and the eyebrows. Use hair gel and a comb to get straight bangs to hang in place.

For men with curly hair, layer bangs and allow them to curl up in different lengths. This look is masculine and allows you to spend less time fixing your hair. For most curly haircuts with layered bangs, run a little curling gel through your hair while it's damp and allow it to dry naturally.

For a trendy look, wear long, side-swept bangs. These bangs are usually quite thick and are paired with a side part. The bangs start at the part and go to the opposite side, sweeping over the eyes. Keep the rest of your hair long, with the bangs shorter than the rest of the hair, or short, with the bangs longer than the rest of your hair. Most men who wear long, side-swept bangs straighten their hair with a flat iron so that every hair will be in place.

Parts

Part your hair on one side or the other, not in the middle. No matter what texture or length your hair is, go with a side part, and allow one side of your hair to fall onto your forehead. This will cover and "break up" your forehead so that the entire forehead won't be seen.

Texture

Wear your hair either straight or curly. Wearing your hair straight is best if you want to wear your hair longer, to wear side-swept bangs, or to wear straight bangs. Straight hair can fall onto the forehead, which helps cover it.

If you wear your hair curly, your hair is more likely to have more volume. The more volume you have in your hair, the more the eye will be drawn to your hair and not to your forehead. If you want to wear your hair curly, ask your hairstylist not to thin your hair.

Facial Hair

Pay attention to your facial hair when you're thinking about a new haircut. Growing a mustache, beard or both can help draw the eye down toward your chin, instead of up toward your forehead.

Men with wide or long foreheads should avoid noticeable sideburns, which will draw attention to the forehead. Keep sideburns short and thin, or get rid of them, to keep the eye away from the forehead.
