Braids, cornrows and hair wraps place a lot of tension on the hair, which can result in breakage and scalp tenderness.
When hair is wet, it stretches and shrinks much like a rubber band. When it is dry, hair does not have as much ability to hold up under tension. When too much tension is applied to the hair, it breaks.
Brushing
Never brush wet hair. Comb or pick wet hair and brush dry hair. Even dry hair, if brushed too much or too vigorously, can break. Overzealous brushing can also result in a tender scalp.
Heavy Hair
Hair can become too heavy. Overly thick and long hair can make the skin of the scalp very tender to the touch. People with super-long hair may notice breakage along the front hairline.
Braiding and Styling
Braids and ponytails are notorious for scalp tenderness and hair breakage. Braids and ponytails should not be tight against the scalp. Hair has to be able to expand and contract or it will break.
Hair Color
Hair coloring agents will cause scalp tenderness and hair breakage if the color is left on too long, if the chemical mixture is too strong and if too many applications are performed back to back.
Perm
Chemical burns associated with perming can result in scalp tenderness and hair breakage. Rods that are rolled too tight are also culprits of these symptoms.
