About Prom Hairstyles

About Prom Hairstyles

A prom provides an opportunity for teenage girls to dress up and shine. While anyone who wants to literally sparkle can wear a bejeweled headband or crystals in their hair, someone who wants a more subtle look can turn heads as well with a down-to-earth hairstyle. Whether you style your hair at home or leave it in the hands of a hairdresser for the big night, keeping your hairdo coordinated with your makeup and your dress creates a prom look worth remembering.

Significance

For a young lady, a glamorous hairstyle on prom night can be one of the avenues towards a Cinderella-like transformation for the occasion. Even if she wears a stunning dress on the big day, if she does not take care of the other elements of her appearance, such as her hair and makeup, there won't be much to distinguish her prom look from the everyday one her schoolmates are accustomed to. A prom hairstyle need not merely be a classic formal hairdo like a bun or a French twist. If you are attending prom soon, look towards bridal magazines and celebrity red carpet photos for ample inspiration (see Resources below).

Types

While you are limited only by your imagination when creating a hairstyle for prom, there are three basic categories all hairstyle variations fall under.

If you favor romantic curls and a soft style, you can wear your hair down to show off masses of waves or ribbon curls. A girl with naturally curly or wavy hair who wants a distinctive look can also wear her hair down, but in a smooth, straight style.

Gather your hair in an updo if you want an elegant hairstyle on prom night. Someone who particularly wishes to keep the attention on her face or shoulders and arms may especially benefit from an updo.

A young lady who can't quite decide whether to wear her hair up or down can compromise with a half-up, half-down style. Such a hairstyle allows you to pull your hair away from your face while allowing some locks to tumble down your back.

Considerations

For a professional or even celebrity-style hairdo on prom night, book an appointment with a hair expert. Salon-created prom hairstyles do not have to be expensive, as some businesses offer teens special prices for services related to the occasion. If your budget won't allow a discounted session at a salon, at least ask a friend or family member for some assistance with a hairstyle that may be too elaborate for you to create on your own. If you plan on dancing or moving about constantly on prom night, you will want your hair to stay securely in place instead of coming undone, which will appear unflattering in pictures.

Misconceptions

Just because prom is a formal occasion that calls for evening wear and dressy shoes does not mean you cannot wear a playful hairstyle. Prom is a teen event after all, so enhancing your hairstyle with accessories that an older woman might find inappropriate on herself is completely acceptable. You can add details for instance like glitter, fake gemstones, flowers and feathers. Shiny headbands, tiaras and hair extensions are commonly used as well for prom hairstyles. If this is the first time you will be using flashy accessories, avoid embarrassment on the big night by planning ahead of time to see if all the pieces of your look work harmoniously together.

Warning

If you are designing your hairstyle yourself and will be using thermal styling tools, invest in heat-protective serums or sprays to shield your hair from potential damage from curling and flat irons. You could even look into other methods to produce the body or curls that you need. Those who have little or no experience with a curling iron can practice with Velcro or cloth curlers at least a week before the big night; such tools are much safer as they do not destroy the hair shaft nor cause burn injuries (see Resources).
