If you want to change flat, straight hair into voluminous, textured locks, retexturizing is an option. Because chemicals make up permanent solutions, hair is often damaged in the process of going from drab to fab. Damage can cause hair to lose body, straighten or even break off in areas. Minimizing the damage and enhancing your hairs' health not only makes your hair look better, but actually helps your perm last longer. The upkeep of perms can be frustrating and time consuming, but with these quick tips, you can easily keep your hair looking alive and full for months!
Instructions
Eliminate the Damage
1. Throw out the heat. Straighteners, curling irons and heated curlers harm hair. Besides, the whole idea behind perms is to get the curly volume without the effort of these damaging tools. Avoid hair dryers if at all possible.
2. Drop the dye. Just like perms, hair dyes and highlights are made of harsh chemicals. Adding the chemicals in coloring solutions to already permed hair may damage your new curls.
3. Do not shampoo every day. Your hygiene will not suffer if you wash your hair every two or three days. All that shampoo takes a toll on your strands.
Rehydration
4. Although you should not shampoo every day, conditioning should be done once a day. Chose an intense conditioner with high proteins. Many brands have intense, repair conditioners.
5. Use leave-in conditioners and defrizzing sprays. Look for products that claim to smooth and prevent frizz. This step is especially important if you choose to use a hair dryer.
6. Deep condition once, every other week. Olive oil is a great home conditioner that leaves your curls sleek and healthy. Take about 1/2 cup of olive oil and spread throughout your hair from roots to ends, paying extra attention to the ends. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes. Rinse, then shampoo well and follow the treatment by your usual conditioner.
7. Take fish oil. Omega-3 fish oil has proteins that help keep your nails, brain, heart and hair healthy. They will strengthen and shine your strands. You can get bottles of Omega-3 fish oil in most grocery and drug stores. Take between 1,200 to 2,400 mg each day with a meal; however, consult with your medical doctor before taking any supplement to ensure there will be no medical interactions.
