A simple bun is the perfect hairstyle for a special occasion or a hot summer day, and a bun isn't only for those with super-long hair. If you have enough hair to hold even the tiniest ponytail, a bun isn't too far off. With the right tools and a bit of practice, creating a bun in your shorter hair is a breeze.
Instructions
The Basic Bun
1. Beginning with slightly dirty hair, comb hair and pull back into a ponytail, securing with a hair elastic. You may want to try several different ponytail positions and go with the one that offers the longest ponytail.
2. Twist hair until it coils on itself to see how much length you have to work with. The shorter and thicker the hair, the more pins you will need.
3. If you have enough length to securely coil your ponytail around the hair elastic, you're halfway to a bun. Twist your hair with one hand, using the other to coerce it into a circular shape.
4. Insert bobby pins through the bun and to the elastic. Position the pins so that they catch the perimeter of the bun and secure to the ponytail base. Don't be afraid to cross the pins or otherwise use force to get them in place. Use the hand mirror to check your results, and redo until satisfied.
The Donut Bun
5. Beginning with slightly dirty hair, comb hair and pull back into a ponytail, securing with a hair elastic. You may want to try several different ponytail positions and go with the one that offers the longest ponytail.
6. Hold the foam donut against the ponytail and pull hair through the center. The donut will serve as a base filler for the bun.
7. Pull sections of your hair around the donut and pin into place underneath, through the base of the ponytail. This usually requires fanning the hair in one direction in order to hide loose ends.
8. Once you've checked your results in the mirror, top off the look with a light finishing spray to hold in place.
