Steps To Relax Black Hair

Among the many different hair types, from naturally curly and thick to straight and thin, the desire for change is sometimes inevitable. The array of styles and types from which to select the "perfect look" can sometimes be overwhelming. Go with the best style that suits and pleases you.

Instructions

1. Separate hair into four parts. The first thing you want to do before applying relaxer is to make sure the hair is evenly divided into four parts or sections (this will make the process a whole lot easier). Part the hair straight down the middle, then straight across (you can start parting across by the top of the ear).

2. Base the scalp. Once the hair is evenly divided into four, grease the scalp and the edges of the hair to avoid burning. If you are using a no-lye relaxer burning is usually unlikely, unless you have really sensitive skin. Greasing and basing the edges of hair means around the forehead, ears, and the neckline (wherever the hair ends in the back).

3. Apply relaxer. Using a relaxer brush (you can find these at any beauty store), start at the top of one of the back sections and apply relaxer to the roots of the hair until complete section is done, then move on to the next.

4. Wash out relaxer. Once all the hair is relaxed use a neutralizing shampoo to wash out relaxer. Continue washing until lathered shampoo is no longer pink, but white (this make take several washings).

5. Apply Conditioner. Many relaxer kits will come with everything you need to begin and complete the process. After the hair is relaxer free, apply either the conditioner that came with the kit or your own, and then comb through for an even spread. You can allow the conditioner sit on the hair for a few minutes, sit under the dryer with the conditioner, or wash it right out. Allowing the conditioner to sit for a while (3 to 5 minutes) provides more body and conditioning to the hair and also give a softer look and feel.

6. Apply setting lotion or leave-in conditioner and style. After rinsing out conditioner, use setting lotion or leave-in conditioner to detangle and hair, then style hair according to your desire. You can choose to blow dry, sit under a domed or bonnet dryer or leave hair wet.
