What Are The Causes Of Itchy & Sore Scalp

An itchy and sore scalp is a common symptom associated with a variety of scalp diseases. It is usually accompanied by redness, pus-filed bumps and flaky, dry patches of skin. If left untreated, the scalp can become infected and require prescription medication.

Products

The products you currently use to shampoo and condition your hair may be stripping the oils from your hair, leaving your scalp dry. The ingredients in the hair products also may irritate your skin, causing your scalp to become sore and itchy.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin disorder that may be caused by changes in weather, stress, fatigue, or autoimmune disorders such as HIV/AIDS.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that causes the cells to produce skin faster than your body can shed the old skin cells. This can cause itchy, sore skin patches.

Fungal Infection

A fungal infection can cause itchy, sore skin and is caused by bacteria entering the hair follicles.

Treatment

Your dermatologist will prescribe either oral or topical antibiotics to reduce symptoms, or you can purchase antifungal shampoos from drugstores without a prescription. Switching your hair products to mild or hypoallergenic brands can also reduce soreness and itchiness.
