Formal Kids' Hairstyles

Braids are practical and easy to do at home for a formal occassion.

A formal hairstyle may be needed for your child when they are attending a special occasion, such as a wedding, first communion, or other celebration. However, young children find it difficult to sit still for long periods of time, which may prove difficult when trying to style their hair in an intricate way. The best formal hairstyles for children are those that look neat and tidy and can be achieved quickly. For little girls, sparkly hair accessories such as hair jewels, tiaras, and hairbands can make everyday hairstyles look more special.

Half up

A half-up style is the perfect compromise if you are considering leaving your child's hair down. A half-up style keeps hair away from the face and getting in the way. To try the look yourself, take a 1-inch section of hair from each side of the face and secure at the back of the head by using bobby pins or elastics. For a more dressed-up look, curls can be added to the hair. When styling a child's hair, it is best to avoid curling irons so that you do not burn your child if they squirm. Instead, use foam rollers; you can wrap the hair around them and remove them after a couple of hours for beautiful ringlets.

Braided

A braided hairstyle is a classic formal hairstyle for girls of all ages and is suitable for many occasions. Braids can be done as pigtails or as one braid down the back of the head and secured with a ribbon that matches your little girl's clothing. The beauty of a braided hairstyle is that it is practical, as the style will hold for a long period of time, but also looks pretty. Braided hair is easier to do on hair that has not been washed for a day or so; if hair is too clean, it will be too soft to stay in place. To braid your child's hair, use simple braiding technique by splitting three sections of hair and plaiting.

Boys

Young boys do not have as many options for changing their hair for formal occasions. If your child usually wears his hair in a spiky surfer style, you can blow dry the hair for a smoother, more polished effect. Boys with textured cuts can also manipulate the hair into different positions by using a wax stick, which can produce a different style for a special occasion.
