Formal Hairstyles For Thin Hair

Women with thin hair may think that they only have a few styles available to them for formal occasions. The stress of a formal event is taxing enough without factoring in hair trouble. Regardless of how thin your hair is, there are products and techniques available to give you a boost of volume. With a few pointers you'll be boasting volume in no time. Grab your favorite styling products and get ready to create.

Glamorous Bed Head

This look is ideal for thin hair that is long. This amount of volume is great for prom or a wedding. Length usually adds more thinness to the hair so this style is perfect if you want to retain length and still get volume. Take hair that isn't washed and apply a dry shampoo to the roots. Backcomb the roots with a fine-toothed comb to add lift and volume. Apply a texturizing mousse to the crown and work through the hair with your fingers. Apply hairspray to keep the style light and from going flat.

Volumized Comb-Over

This style is achievable for any hair length but looks especially nice on short hair. Take freshly washed hair and apply a volumizing mousse. Blow dry with a paddle brush so that it is straight but still gaining volume. Once hair is completely dry make a deep side part on one side. The part should start at the end of the eyebrow on either side. Brush the hair to encourage volume and also to tame tangles. Spray a shine spray liberally on the hair.

Big Curls

This style is best for long hair. Take freshly washed hair and apply a curl setting lotion from root to tips. Place large curl rollers in the hair section by section. No section should be larger than 2 inches wide. Once all rollers are in place sit under a hooded dryer until your hair is dry. Usually it takes about 30 minutes for long hair to dry under a hooded dryer. Once hair is dry allow 5 to 10 minutes for the rollers to cool and release the hair. Shake the hair out to give volume to the curls. Finger comb them with your hands and then spray with volumizing hairspray.

High Volume Ponytail

This is a great alternative to the complicated updo that some thin haired women can't master. Take freshly washed hair and apply a volumizing spray with heat protectant that is compatible for blow-drying. Volumizing heat protectants can be found at any beauty supply store. Blow dry the hair straight and apply a leave-in shine serum to reduce frizz. Your hair will have quite a bit of volume at this point. Make a side part in the hair and brush it to keep it neat and tight. Gather the hair into a low ponytail on one side and then secure it with an elastic. If you desire wrap a section of hair, no wider than an inch hair around the elastic to hide it. Embellish the hair with decorative clips for a night out. Finish with volumizing hairspray to prevent the hair from going flat.

High Volume Waves

This style is very simple and takes very little styling time. For an impromptu formal event this style is quick enough to get you out the door looking glamorous. Wash and blow-dry the hair with the fingers to encourage waves and volume. Halfway through blow-drying apply a texturizing mousse to help give the hair more textured wave. Once the hair is completely dry finish with a shine spray and a headband.
