Bathing While Pregnant

Bathing While Pregnant

There are certain challenges, as well as plenty of misconceptions, associated with bathing while pregnant. While there are measures that should be taken to protect the safety of yourself as well as your baby, these are simple to achieve. Bathing can be a relaxing and peaceful haven for an aching pregnant body. Pamper yourself while taking a few easy, common sense steps to make bathing while pregnant a wonderful and enjoyable experience.

Instructions

1. Keep the water temperature under 100 degrees. ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) recommends keeping your core body temperature below 102 degrees. If it is raised beyond that level, your heart rate will rise, which can compromise blood flow to the baby. If the water is comfortable to step into right away, it is close to your body temperature and thus safe enough to enter while pregnant.

2. Prevent falling accidents by using a rubber bath mat inside the tub. If your bathroom floor is tiled rather than carpeted, place a soft, secure mat outside the tub so that when you step out you will not slip. Avoid stepping on the edge of the tub to get out as this also poses a falling risk. Later in pregnancy when your balance is getting more unstable it’s best to only bathe when there is another person at home, just in case you do fall or need assistance getting out of the bathtub.

3. Bathe during pregnancy as frequently as you want up until your water breaks. When the amniotic sac and mucous plug are still in place, the baby is well-protected from outside contaminants. After the amniotic sac is broken it is possible that germs may enter the vagina and pose an infection risk.

4. Use bubbles, salts, fizzies or oils in your bath during pregnancy. These items are perfectly safe for you and your baby and can help you relax and enjoy your time in the tub even more.
