Hair Cuts & Short Styles For Older Women

It is natural for hair to thin with old age.

As a woman, growing older can lead to embarrassing hair thinning. This condition can be disguised with a proper haircut or hairstyle so that the hair appears to be volumized and full. Shorter hairstyles work well on older women because they not only hide thinning hair but also draw attention away from fine lines and wrinkles. Choose a short hairstyle that suits your personal style and maintenance preferences.

Short and Trimmed

Short and trimmed hair works well for older women with very thin hair; this style requires little to no maintenance, making it ideal for those with limited range of motion. To create this style, ask your hairdresser to cut your hair to 2 inches in length all over and layer the hair down to 1 inch. The layering adds the illusion of thick hair by cutting the top layers slightly shorter than the bottom layers. To style this haircut, put a small dollop of medium hold mousse in your palm and work it into your hair until dry. Follow by combing the hair smooth, and the style is ready to wear.

Short and Curly

Short, curly hairstyles work well for older women, as they draw attention up, away from a drooping neckline, to the eyes and mouth. This style works best for women with naturally curly hair; however, a medium perm will add curls to straight hair. To create this style, ask your hairdresser to cut your hair just above chin length and layer it to add volume and body. In order to style this hair, simply comb the curls smooth and finish with an even layer of medium hold hairspray to keep stray hairs in check.

Short with Bangs

Short, straight hair with bangs will frame the face of an older woman, making the neckline appear long and feminine. To achieve this style, ask your hairdresser to layer your hair at chin length before adding bangs to the style. The bangs should be cut in to sweep away from the face on either side, just below eye level, to frame the face and draw attention to the eyes. Style this cut by brushing the hair smooth and combing a dollop of medium hold mousse through the underside to add volume. If you wish to move the bangs away from your face, use small hair clips to fasten them to the sides of your head.
