Shag Hairstyle Cutting Directions

A shag haircut can look wild and fun when cut and styled right.

Cutting your hair into a shag haircut is easy. All you need are some scissors, a feathering blade, a ponytail holder and the courage to wear the look.

Position

To begin the shag haircut, you must position the head properly. Flip the head upside-down with the hair hanging toward the ground.

Preparation

While the head is upside down, gather the hair into a ponytail. The ponytail should be about four or five inches from the scalp.

Cutting

Cut the ponytail off, still keeping the scissors four to five inches from the scalp. Remove the rubber band and shake the hair out.

Result

You or your subject should have a shaggy, stylish cut as a result. You can even the hair out on both sides if you want the look to be more symmetrical. Cut off any additional hair that you want to remove. For an even shaggier look, use a blade to feather the hair.

Styling

To style a shag look, apply mousse to the tips of the hair and comb through it until the hair gains volume and energy. Use root-lifting gel to keep the style from drooping too much.
