Do [Curly] Kinky Twists

Use either sponge curlers or rod curlers.

Curly kinky twists are touted as being a "protective style" by many women who are transitioning from chemical relaxers to a natural look. Kinky twists involve braiding kinky extensions into your hair and twisting. The twists are set in curls, producing an alluring look with a head full of bouncy curls. While you may be able to put the extensions in the front, top and sides, you will need someone to do the back of your head for you. This is a time-consuming hairstyle, but the results are worth the effort.

Instructions

1. Section the hair into four sections and secure three of the sections with large hair clips.

2. Use a rattail comb to map out a section of hair 1-inch long by 1/2-inch wide. Clip this section off to one side. Secure the rest of the hair against the scalp with a large clip. Take the clip off the small section you will work with first.

3. Apply a small amount of lock-and-hold hair gel down the length of the section of hair. Use a dab about the size of a pea.

4. Place the middle of one kinky extension against the scalp above the section of hair and clip it in place. The real hair is in the middle with the extension hanging down on each side.

5. Begin braiding the section by crossing the right extension over the middle hair, which makes the right extension the middle strand. Cross the left extension over the middle strand, making it the middle strand. Bring the right strand over the middle strand; bring the left strand over the middle strand.

6. Dissect the middle section of hair into two sections, grouping them with the other two sections on either side. You now have two sections of hair instead of three.

7. Twist the two sections of hair together, twisting them tightly all the way down to the bottom. The lock-and-hold gel will keep them together.

8. Place a foam or rod curler at the end of the section of hair and roll it halfway up to the scalp. Secure it in place with the band that is attached.

9. Bring a cup of water to a boil on a stove in a small saucepan. Pour the boiling water into a cup. Place the curler into the cup of hot water and hold it there for two minutes. Remove the curler and squeeze it dry with a towel.

10. Repeat the steps for all the sections of hair and wait 10 minutes. Remove the curlers. Do not brush or pick out the curls but allow each curl to hang individually.
