Use Texture Paste

Once texture paste has dried, the artist can scratch and sand it for added effects.

Artist use texture paste to build up and define shapes and areas on mediums such as canvas, paper and card stock. Texture paste is thick and allows artists to create various textures by using a brush or palette knife to spread, scratch and form shapes easier than they are able to do with paint alone. Add color by mixing texture paste with acrylic paint, or directly paint the texture when it has dried on the surface you intend to paint. Once the texture has dried, an artist can sand, carve or scrape the paste to modify the textured surface.

1. Mix texture paste with acrylic paint to add color and increase volume. Add a little paint at a time, increasing the paint amount until you reach the desired color. (As an alternative, apply paint over the texture with acrylic color or oil paint after you complete the following steps and let the texture dry.

2. Use a finger, knife or brush to apply texture paste to a clean and non-oily medium such as a canvas or paper. Spread the texture like butter, creating ridges and valleys if desired. Repeat the process to build up layers. Allow each layer to dry completely to avoid any cracking.

3. Create different textures and shapes while the paste is still wet by using tools such as a palette knife, a paintbrush or your fingers; or press in patterns using a pattern you like from any object such as a mold or a feather.

4. Add in materials like sand or saw wood to build and create effects.

5. Carve or sand the surface, if desired, once it dries.

6. Paint the textured surface if you did not add paint to the texture, or even if you did color the paste, by brushing only the textured peaks and ridges or by pressing firmly with a brush or roller to paint the entire surface.

7. Secure a stencil template to the surface for the texture paint by taping or using glue that is easy to remove.

8. Apply a light coat of texture using a brush or painting knife to the cut out areas of the template. Remove any excess texture. Let the surface dry and repeat if needed to build up.

9. Carefully remove the stencil from the design.
