1950sinspired Hairstyles

The romantic, stylish and elegant updos of the 1950s are still worn today.

During the 1950s color TV was brought to the public, Truman ordered the construction of the hydrogen bomb, and teenagers became an emerging fashion voice. The 1950s brought us soft, sexy curls, pretty updos and ponytails. Today's modern hair trends reflect that of the past and can be worn both day to day or on a special night out.

The Updo

Create a Grace Kelly-inspired elegant, yet simple updo that enhances your neckline and makes your look seem effortless. According to BecomeGorgeous.com, updos will be one of the hottest hairstyles for spring and summer of 2011. A more modern take on the famous updo is the slicked back, full ballerina bun where the hair is made into a ponytail, teased, then wrapped up to create fullness in the bun. The Barbie-inspired modern chignon with a twist at the base of the neck is another fun updo that is easy to create that is elegant in style.

The High Quiff

Looking like you walked off a Paris runway is achieved when sporting the high quiff. A timeless style for all ages, this hair style is edgy and can be worn with a trendy hair accessory or with simple bobby pins. This is a super finished style, loaded with hairspray, works best on day-old hair that has time to accumulate some natural hair oils. The high quiff is created by teasing your hair on top of your head with a close tooth comb, then softening it by combing it gently to appear smooth and pinning it with bobby pins or a clip to keep it in place. Worn sky high at the crown or in a sleek hair bump at the front of your head, the high quiff is considered a classic hairstyle by many experts.

Soft Curls

Equate yourself with the sexy symbolism of Marylin Monroe by styling your hair into soft, sexy curls worn down. This hairstyle can be worn by those with poker straight or naturally wavy locks. Using a volumizing mousse, blow dry your hair with a diffuser attachment to maintain curl when hot rolling for a softer look. When you remove the hot rollers and find you haven't achieved a tight enough curl, you can enhance curls with a curling iron where needed. When the curls are set, use your fingers to soften the look. Finished, this look is soft and sexy, just the way we remember Marilyn Monroe.

The Ponytail

One of the most revered styles of 1950s was the ponytail. The beauty of this style is -- there's nothing to it. To create a ponytail, gather all of the hair behind your head and secure it into an elastic hair band or ribbon. This simple and classic style, still worn by most females, can be modernized with a bubble effect. Tease your entire pony to give body for the big bubbles, then wrap a second hair band around the center of the ponytail, then another 3 inches from the ends. Fluff out the hair between the bands to get a modern twist on the classic ponytail.
