What Is Semiformal Dress Code

What Is Semi-Formal Dress Code?

Choosing appropriate clothing for a party or reception and dance can sometimes be tricky. Because of all the different designations such as formal, white-tie, business casual or semi-formal, you need to know what kind of clothing and/or accessories are appropriate for each level of formality. Understanding which is which will help you avoid embarrassment.

Women

When you receive an invitation to an event which specifies semi-formal, this means a cocktail-length (knee-length) or long dress. You have to wear sheer hosiery. Leave the business pumps at home and put on the dressy pumps. You can accessorize with tasteful jewelry.

Men

Men wear suits to semi-formal events. The suit should be a good-quality dark suit with a dark tie and white shirt. You should wear dark socks and black shoes.

Occasions

Semi-formal events are holiday parties, weddings and dance/receptions. The annual office Christmas party can often be designated as a semi-formal occasion.

Types

Semi-formal attire can also be called "holiday" or "cocktail" attire. Sometimes, formal Christmas parties fall into this category.

Options

You do have options available which you can choose, depending on the time of day or the actual event. If the wedding or party takes place during daytime hours, men can wear a light-colored suit with a brighter-colored shirt and tie. Women can choose to wear a dressy pant suit, rather than a long dress or cocktail dress.
