Girls' Hairstyles Of The '80s

Extreme amounts of hairspray were used in the '80s.

Woman's hair during the '80s screamed volume and lots of it. The more volume that girls could pump into their hair, the more it was admired. Some hairstyles were influenced by pop culture icons like Cyndi Lauper and Madonna. Take a glimpse at some of the unforgettable hairstyles frequently worn by girls in the '80s.

Perms

Most women had to have a perm during the '80s, as it was hard to achieve the type of volume that hair trends called for without some salon assistance. Hair was manipulated into tight spiral curls with harsh chemicals. These strong chemicals made hair frizzier, dryer and coarse, which made backcombing easier. Perms were popular with just about any length of hair. Girls with short hair would leave length at the top and have it permed and teased while keeping the rest of it short.

Crimping

Textured hair was a big thing during the '80s. A crimping iron with two metal plates that interlocked was used to crimp hair. Hair was placed into the heated plates and the result was even waves similar to the result of taking your hair out of small braids. Crimped hair was often gathered into a voluminous ponytail and secured with a hair scrunchie that matched the rest of the girl's outfit. Crimped ponytails were also teased so they would be as frizzy and as large as possible.

Ponytails

Tight ponytails were a good way for girls to get attention. Ponytails were not worn in a traditional way (centered in the back of the head), and instead were worn in unusual placements. A popular ponytail was one worn to either side of the head that was positioned right above the top of the ear or aligned right behind it. Ponytails were often teased and curled to achieve maximum volume. For girls who had short hair, hair was gathered up and secured with a ponytail holder. The hair was then teased and sprayed so it would fan out like a fountain. These ponytail looks were often worn with a tight ponytail holder along with a matching scrunchie.

Extreme Bangs

Girls in the '80s often spent hours in the mirror backcombing their bangs until they reached as high as possible. Girls would use hot curling irons or hot rollers to curl hair off the forehead. Then round hairbrushes along with a blow dryer was used to tease bangs until they were inches off the scalp. Bangs were secured in place with tons of hairspray. These tall, bizarre bangs were worn with hair that was down or in a side ponytail.
