Do An Updo For Medium Length Hair

Create buns, twists and half updos with medium length hair.

Women with hair that's not short or long sometimes experience difficulty in creating their own medium length updo. Since hair is sometimes not long enough to pull back to create long curls or short enough to spike, they might be at a loss in finding a style that works. However, girls with medium length hair can design twisted, curly and smooth updos to fit formal occasions such as weddings, prom, a party or school dance.

Instructions

Messy Bun

1. Create a messy bun for a wedding or prom. Comb or brush hair just enough to remove big tangles.

2. Use thumbs or index fingers to gather hair above the ears into a half ponytail held loosely in one hand. Use the comb or brush to backcomb the underside of this section, giving hair fullness. Lay the section back down and secure all hair back into an elastic ponytail holder. Do not smooth out any hair on top of the head.

3. Curl one-inch sections of hair with the curling iron. Hold each curl for five to ten seconds, just long enough to make a wave or loose curl. Use bobby pins to secure curls around the ponytail, obscuring the elastic piece. Loosen any free ends with fingers to create more fullness and messiness. Spray the style with aerosol hairspray.

Updo Twist

4. Brush all hair to one side of the head. Gather hair in a ponytail and hold it in one hand. Hairspray the back of the hair.

5. Insert hairpins or bobby pins vertically on the ponytail side to hold it in place. It might be necessary to use several bobby pins to fully secure hair. Jason P. Ruel of the Bella Online website recommends placing bobby pins in an "X" formation for better security.

6. Roll the loose hair over the top of the bobby pins, obscuring them from view. Direct the ponytail ends upward toward the top of the head. Use more hairpins to tuck the roll over the existing bobby pins and maintain the style. Hairspray liberally.

7. Curl the remaining ponytail ends on top of the hair. Leave these ends loose or finger them apart for a fluffy style.

Curly Half Updo

8. Design a curly half updo to achieve an elegant look with medium length hair, according to the Bella Online website. Brush hair until smooth. Side part a one- to two-inch section of hair near the forehead to create the illusion of long bangs. Leave this part out in the following steps.

9. Pull hair back into a half ponytail. Gather into an elastic ponytail holder. Alternately, Ruel suggests twisting the half ponytail at the top and using bobby pins to keep it in place.

10. Curl one-inch sections of hair using a one-inch barreled curling iron. Gently brush curls to create a fluffy look.

11. Hairspray the front section of bangs that you side parted in Step One to keep hair out of the eyes. Spray curls in the back of the head in a single sweeping motion.
