Get Sponsorships For Pageants

With a sponsorship, your child might take home the gold.

In various places across the nation, families enter their children into pageants to earn money for being the most beautiful or talented child in the competition, most notably sensationalized in the television show "Toddlers and Tiaras." However, dressing up your child for a pageant can cost a lot of money up front. If you do not have the money, you can try seeking sponsorships for your child.

Instructions

1. Visit local beauty shops or tanning salons to ask for sponsorship of your child. Many businesses are interested in donating a service, like a free tanning or hair treatment in exchange for you to advertise the shop during the pageant.

2. Request sponsorship from a local jeweler. You may even be able to borrow some pearls to give your child an edge in the competition. You can also try children's clothing boutiques.

3. Send letters to non-local businesses, such as in the next state for sponsorship. Anything you cannot get locally, you might be able to get in another town.

4. Ask your family to help you sponsor your pageant fee. Most relatives would not pass up the chance to see a young relative compete.

Updo Hair Styles For Black Women

When selecting an updo, keep the occasion, image and cost in mind. The occasion, or the event, is the hair's anchoring point. Whether it's a weekend lunch or a business dinner, the occasion determines the appropriate type of hairstyle. Build your image around the occasion, so that it matches the occasion, while still reflecting your own personality. Finally, while the cost is the final consideration, don't let it dictate the style. Save money by bartering services with stylists whenever possible.

Work

Base buns convey an image of sophisticated intelligence; the hair is off the face and is not visible from the front. Hair can be worn natural or straightened, and is braided tightly into a bun, then fastened in place with bobby pins. Even though the hair sits in a raised bun at the base of the head, this style can be considered an updo because the hair is pinned up. Base buns are friendly to almost any budget, because all they require are coated rubber bands and bobby pins. It is a style that must be redone on a daily basis.

Cornrows are braids that lie against the scalp, and can be braided upwards into a ponytail. Hair can be natural or straightened, and braided with natural or synthetic hair. If worn with natural hair, the bun is secured in place with the same method used for the base bun. When covered every night and lightly moisturized, it can last for about a week. Cornrow buns with extensions can last much longer, from three weeks to a month, using the same maintenance techniques. This style can be expensive with or without extensions. Fees include stylists' pay and hair cost (if applicable).

Evening

The topknot is a classic and elegant style. It can be worn with straightened hair, but for a more ethnic look, keep the hair natural. All the hair is gathered into a high ponytail that sits at the summit, where the highest point of both ears would extend to meet in the center of the scalp. Braid the hair and secure it with coated rubber bands and bobby pins.

The straight fall is regal and luxurious. It requires that hair be straightened and pulled back into a ponytail at the crown of the head. If the hair is shorter than 14 inches, using a weft of straight human hair at 18 to 20 inches is recommended. Braid and knot the natural hair coming out of the ponytail into a small bun secured with bobby pins. Pin the human hair weft around the bun with bobby pins until the bun is invisible, covered with long straight human hair. For added drama, if there is any additional human hair left on the weft, cut a 4-inch section off and braid it. Wrap the braid over the human hair around the bun, securing it with bobby pins. The result will be a long, straight ponytail that appears to be coming out of a wrapped braid. This style is expensive, taking into consideration the price of the human hair.

The messy bun is a favorite among young women and those who can pull off the ingenue look. Hair must be straightened and either set or hot curled with large rollers to create lots of volume. Take voluminous hair and loosely sweep it into a ponytail at the crown of the head. Do not secure the rubber band tightly. Instead, use the rubber band as a guide, and pin the hair into the shape of a bun. It is important what while the bun looks messy, it is held securely in place by the rubber band and the bobby pins. Freely let stray hairs and tendrils fall as they may.

Casual

The ponytail is the classic versatile updo. It is playful, yet appropriate for casual wear, and can be dressed up or down, based on accessories such as headbands. Ponytails can be worn with natural or straightened hair, and with or without extensions.

For a more mature look, secure the ponytail at the crown or base of the head. For a more whimsical look, secure the ponytail at the center of the scalp in the same place as the topknot. Ponytails must be redone on a daily basis and are the most economical style of all when done with natural hair, since all they require is a rubber band. If worn with extensions, take hair cost into consideration.

Hairstyles With Big Curls

Big curls look lovely on long hair.

Big, voluminous curls are a sassy and sexy way to give your hair bounce and movement. If your hair is naturally wavy, curls are a pretty easy look to achieve. If your hair is pin straight or very kinky, you will have to use more styling products and time to achieve this look. Obtaining big curls if you don't have them naturally will also usually involve using heat on your hair, such as blow dryers, hot rollers, hair straighteners or curling irons.

Long and Layered

One way to feature big curls is in long, layered hair. This works best on hair that is about mid-back length or even longer. As the hair has layers in it, the curls will be throughout your hair, not just on the ends. Use hot rollers to create the big curls. Allow the curlers to heat up for about 10 minutes. Take pieces of hair about 3 inches wide and wrap each section around a curler. Use clips to hold the curlers in place. Leave them in for about 5 minutes. Lightly mist your hair with hairspray and run your fingers through the curls to make them big and fluffy.

Short and Styled

Try a shorter, molded hairstyle with big curls, which is is reminiscent of the styles found in the 1950s. To create this, your hair should be about an inch below your chin. Use a large-barrel curling iron to create the curls. Start at the top and then curl the ends inward. At the front of your hair, make large, loose curls that fall like waves.

Shoulder-Length Hair

Use a curling iron or a hair straightener to create big curls on shoulder-length hair. If your hair is naturally curly and you would like to loosen up the curls a bit, use a hair straightener to straighten it out and then twist it at the ends to create the curls. Shoulder-length hair works well with big curls, as it isn't too long and won't weigh them down.

Ponytail

Try making your everyday ponytail a bit more dressy. Pull your hair back into a ponytail towards the middle part of your head. Use a curling iron to curl the end of the ponytail into ringlet curls. After you spray it with a bit of hairspray, run your fingers through it to make a bouncy ponytail with curls at the end.

Different Easy Hairstyles

Wearing hair down or up like this is easy, but sometimes women like more variety.

It's easy to get stuck in a hair rut, wearing your hair the same way over and over, day in and day out. Women all love convenience and ease, even when it comes to styling our hair, but we still want to look pretty and chic. That's why we need to learn different easy hairstyles that we can go to, to change up our looks whenever we feel the need.

Chic Ponytail

The ponytail is a hairstyle basic. It can be worn in a sleek tail at formal occasions, or it can be sporty when working out. One way to make your ponytail more chic is to cover the elastic. If your hair is frizzy, use an anti-frizz product. If your hair is stick-straight, scrunch with a curl spray or cream to create waves. Pull your hair into a low ponytail, but leave a strand of hair handing out. Secure your hair with hair elastic, and then use the strand of hair hanging out to wrap around the base of the ponytail to hide the elastic. Use bobby pins to hold this strand of hair in place.

Messy Bun

The messy bun is extremely easy, cute and has an air of "I don't waste time on my hair" about it. Gather your hair as you would into a pony tail. It doesn't matter if you do it as a high or low ponytail; it's your preference. Wrap a hair elastic around it 2-3 times. The last time you wrap the elastic, don't pull your hair through all the way. Leave it looped. To make it messier, pull a few other pieces out. If too much falls out and it becomes too messy for you, you may pin some into place if you'd like, but the idea of this style is for it to appear unfussy and carefree.

Half-up, Half-down

If you can't decide whether to wear your hair up or down, try both! This hairstyle is perfect for all hair types because anyone can wear it. It looks great straight, curly or wavy, sleek or voluminous. Gather the top layers of your hair and pull it back, brushing to eliminate ridges, and secure with a small elastic, barrettes or pins.

Hair Poof

You can choose to adjust the height of your poof depending on how voluminous you want it.

This style is similar to the half-up half-down style, except it has a poof. This style is easy, especially if you're trying to grow out your bangs. Simply begin by pulling back your bangs or a small amount of hair at the top of your head. Once that part of your hair is sectioned off, brush it upward and tease to create volume, then pull hair back and secure with pins. When you're finished, the front of your hair (bangs) will be pulled back and rounded into a poof while the rest of your hair hangs down.

Sideways Front Braid

Braids are no longer just for little girls! If you know French braid, you'll know do this. Part your hair to the side, and holding the front section of hair up, French braid it so it curves along your hair line. Leave the rest of the hair down.

If you don't know French braid, follow these steps.

With your hands, separate the hair you want to braid into 3 sections.

Cross the right strand over into the middle so that the right strand becomes the middle strand. Then cross the left strand into the middle so it also becomes the new middle strand.

Repeat. As you pull strands from the right and left sides, make sure to also pull a small chunk from the rest of your hair so that it forms a cohesive braid all the way down.

Side Ponytail

This is another twist on a low ponytail. You simply create another easy ponytail, but instead of centering it on the back of your head, put the elastic so that the ponytail is 1 inch further to the side. This allows your hair to fall over your shoulder for a very feminine, pretty look.

Put A Haircutting Cape On

Secure the cape at the neck to protect the back from falling hair or chemicals used at a salon.

Hair will fall during a session with your stylist, regardless if you are getting a simple trim or an entire new hairdo. The best way to keep your clothes and skin hair-free is to wear a haircutting cape. These oversized, plastic or cloth capes are available at salons. These capes catch all falling hair. When the stylist is finished, he will pull off the cape and you can leave free of hair trimmings.

Instructions

1. Wrap a towel around your neck prior to putting on the cape to prevent hair from slipping down your back. Fold a hand towel in half horizontally and clip the two ends together in the front of your neck. Hair clips are handy to use or you can pin it with a large safety pin. A stylist will often do this for you.

2. Grab the appropriate size cape. Generally, the bigger the better. Make sure the cape is large enough to fit comfortably around the neck.

3. Sit in a salon chair and drape the cape over your body. Often, a stylist does this without you asking once you're in the stylist's chair.

4. Fluff the cape in front of you so it lays over your torso and both legs. This will keep hair from falling on your clothing.

5. Remove the cape carefully at the end of the cut. Unsnap the back and fold it forward to contain all the hair in the center of the cape. Unfold the cape over a trash can to dispose of the hair. Often, a stylist will remove the cape for you and remove the towel from around your neck. The hair will fall on the floor and salon staff will clean it up.

What Are The Dangers Of Permanent Hair Color

It seems like an innocent thing to use permanent hair color. A person may just want to lighten the hair or make it darker. She might just want to get rid of a few grey hairs popping up on her head. But the chemicals contained in hair dyes, when used many times, can actually cause some types of cancer to occur in the body. It is scary to think that the chemicals in a seemingly innocent bottle of hair dye and the developing agent can harm a person.

Harmful Chemicals

There are several chemicals found in hair dyes that can cause a person harm. They include: ammonia, coal tar, DMDM Hydantoin, lead acetate and PPD.

Para-Phenylenediamine (PPD) is used to darken the hair and is listed by the Center for Disease Control as a potential allergen. PPD is commonly known to cause redness, soreness, itching, a burning sensation, and headaches. A report by the Journal of the National Cancer Institute states that prolonged exposure to dark hair dyes may increase the occurrence of various forms of cancer such as: bladder cancer, leukemia, breast cancer, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

DMDM Hydantoin

DMDM Hydantoin is a preservative found in hair dyes that has been given restricted usage in Japan. According the United States Food and Drug administration (the FDA), DMDM has been linked to immune system problems.

Coal Tar

Coal tar is an ingredient in hair dyes and some dandruff shampoos, and according to the FDA, it can cause cancer in laboratory animals. The ingredient that is believed by the FDA found in coal tar that can cause cancer is called 4-methoxy-m-phenylenediamine.

Ammonia

Ammonia is contained in hair dyes. Other than the nasty smell that ammonia creates, it can cause skin inflammation, coughing and difficulty breathing. Ammonia is often used in household cleaning products to create a bright, clean home.

Lead Acetate

Lead acetate can also be potentially harmful when used many times to dye the hair. Lead was taken out of household paints years ago due to its potential risks. Lead is said to disrupt the function of the brain's neurotransmitters and can also cause blood clots, affect the sensory development and reduce intelligence levels.

Precautions

Pregnant women are advised by health care professionals not to dye their hair. They are also advised not to even highlight the hair or use a hair color that is semi-permanent. The chemicals may cross over to the placenta, thus harming the fetus. Read the labels of hair dyeing products to steer away from these harmful chemicals.

Famous Wedding Hairstyles

A bride will select many items to outfit her for her wedding day--dress, shoes and veil. She already has one accessory in her possession--her hair. Wedding hairstyles are as varied as brides. Celebrities have provided inspiration for many hairstyles, easily interpreted with just a few pins and some hairspray.

Loose Braid

The loose braid can signify romance. On wet hair, apply a scrunching mousse, then let your hair air dry. Part your hair in the center, make two French braids, secure them with elastic and apply a shine mist.

French Twist

The French Twist is achieved by curling dry hair and pinning half to one side of your neck. Take the rest of hair in bunches and pin them to the side, twisting each bunch. Let the rest of your hair fall into a ponytail, then spray your whole head with hairspray.

Flower Updo

On dry hair, separate a top section and pull it into a high ponytail, spraying it with hairspray. Make a second ponytail below the first. Separate small sections from the base of the second ponytail and curl the sections with a 1-inch curling iron. Secure the curls with bobby pins, letting the ends fall free. Repeat the process until the lower ponytail is completely curled and pinned, then repeat the steps with the top section. Add in flowers.

Sweet Waves

Separate dry hair with a comb, and put the top of your hair into a clip, leaving one section of hair at nape of neck. Spray that section with hairspray. Curl small sections of the hair with a 1-inch curling iron. Pin the curls into place and repeat the process for whole head, then spray with hairspray. Wait 30 minutes, unpin the curls and comb the hair gently.

Shorter Hair, No Cutting Involved

Pull the top of the hair into a clip. Take 2-inch sections of the rest of your hair, fold them toward root and secure them with pins. Continue this process for the entire bottom section of your hair. Unclip the top part of hair, roll the ends underneath the pinned bottom sections and secure them with more pins. Apply hairspray.

Facts About Hair Relaxer

Hair relaxers are a type of chemical cream that loosen the curls of the hair. Hair relaxers are used to make tightly curled hair easier to manage, comb and brush.

Hair relaxers loosen the curls.

Invention

Hair relaxers were invented by Garrett Morgan during the late 19th century. Morgan was a clothing manufacturer who accidentally discovered that the liquid that polished the needles and straightened material could also straighten hair.

Types

There are two types of hair relaxers: lye and no lye. Lye relaxers contain the chemical sodium hydroxide while no-lye relaxers contain the chemical guanidine hydroxide.

Before Relaxing

Care should be taken not to irritate the scalp before applying a hair relaxer. The hair should not be washed for several days before it is relaxed.

Side Effects

Hair relaxer usage can result in hair breakage, thinning and loss. Hair relaxers can also cause scalp irritation and damage.

Warnings

Persons who use relaxers should always follow manufacturer's instructions. The chemicals should not be left on the hair any longer than necessary.

Alternatives

Pressing your hair with hot irons is an alternative to using chemical hair relaxers.

Hairstyles For A Grade Eight Graduation

Wear a hairstyle that looks great with a graduation cap.

A grade eight graduation is a special occasion that often marks the transition from middle school into high school. This graduation ceremony may be the first for a young girl, and figuring out what to do with her hair might be a frustrating situation as she wears a cap that can feel awkward. Hairstyles should be age-appropriate and easy to do, and should look great in photographs.

Side Hairstyles

Side hairstyles are popular for young people, according to Hairstyle Updos. They can look young, fashionable and sophisticated at the same time. Some side hairstyle ideas include side ponytails or off-centered buns. Side hairstyles have the advantage that they look good with or without bangs and with any shape of face. To create a side ponytail, simply gather hair into a low ponytail on one side and secure it with an elastic band.

Chignon

Great for long hair, the chignon is a hairstyle that will never go out of fashion for those with medium to long-length hair. A basic chignon is a knot formed at the back of the head, and the most popular placement of a chignon is at the nape of the head. Chignons originally were made in the shape of a figure eight, but it is acceptable to create any type of twist or knot you like today. Secure a chignon with hairpins and adorn it with sparkling hair clips or small flowers.

Sleek Low Ponytail

Eighth-grade graduates can create a sleek hairstyle by slicking their hair into a low ponytail. However, a flashy barrette should not cover the elastic hairband because the student will also wear a cap. Instead, the graduate should wrap a small section of her own hair around the elastic band and secure the end of the strand of hair with hairpins under the ponytail.

Braids

Braided hair is not just for pigtails. Various hairstyles incorporate braids. For example, a graduate can wrap a braid around a bun, chignon or the elastic band of a ponytail. A unique hairstyle to make with braids includes gathering long hair into a low ponytail. Braid small sections of hair in the ponytail into individual braids, and secure the end of each braid with a small elastic band that matches the color of the graduate's hair. Gather the hair at the end of all the small braids together with a large ponytail, twist the hair into a bun and secure it with hairpins.

Easiest Way To Do Finger Waves

Finger waves are a popular hairstyle for those who want a dressier look. Finger waves can be used for a variety of styles, including horizontal waves, which run parallel around the head or vertical waves that run up and down the head. Use a setting lotion to make it easier to form waves and to help them stay in place.

Preparation

Use finger waving lotion to make hair easier to shape and keep it in place. To apply lotion, part hair to the scalp and comb smooth. Arrange the hair to the preferred style. Put the lotion on damp hair and use a comb to circulate throughout the hair. Apply the lotion to half the hair at a time to keep it from drying. Don't use an excessive amount of lotion.

Making Waves

To make finger waves, use the index finger to shape hair with a comb, using a circular motion. Begin at the hairline and move toward the crown in 1.5-inch sections. To form the first hair ridge, put the index finger above the area for the ridge. Point the comb's teeth slightly upward and insert the comb under the index finger and pull it forward about an inch along the fingertip. With the comb's teeth still inserted, flatten the comb against the head. This will hold the ridge in place. Remove your hand and put the middle finger above the ridge with the index finger on the comb's teeth. Close the two fingers and apply pressure to the head.

To make a second ridge, you'll reserve what you did to make the second. Begin at the crown and draw the comb from the index fingertip to the finger's base. To make a third ridge, you follow the movements used to make the first ridge. Continue alternating this pattern until this half of the head is finished. Once the first half is complete, apply lotion to the other half and begin with the first ridge on that side. Don't try to make the ridges higher by lifting the hair or pushing it; this will distort the ridge.

Once the ridges are formed, put a net over the hair, secured with hairpins or clippies if necessary. Using medium heat, dry hair thoroughly. When the hair is dry, remove the pins and hairnet. Gently comb out hair into soft waves. Whether you want to make horizontal or vertical finger waves, the procedure is the same.

Tips

To make it easier, use hard rubber combs with fine and course teeth. If you want to emphasize the ridges, press the ridge between your fingers, with the fingers against your head. For a longer-lasting wave, mold the waves in the direction of hair's natural growth. Be sure that the hair is completely dry before you comb it out, or the waves won't stay in place. Spray the hair lightly with a lacquer to hold the waves longer and make hair shine.

Take Digital Glamour Photography

Glamour photography is a combination of portraiture and photography. Women have these portraits taken as a gift for their spouse or as a treat for themselves. Originally these shots pictured heavy makeup and big hair. Today's glamour shots are more subdued and natural. High key lighting has been replaced with soft natural light, and a fan creates movement for more flowing hair styles.

Instructions

1. Prepare your subject by helping her apply makeup and style her hair. Encourage your subject to wear solid colors so the attention remains on her face.

2. Have your client sit on a poser about two feet in front of a backdrop that matches her skin tone and coordinates with her attire.

3. Set your lights up with the main light about 3 feet from your subject and at a 45 degree angle. The second light should be behind the camera and at eye level with the subject. Attach an umbrella to reflect the light back onto your subject. Use a hair light pointing directly at the head to create separation between your subject and the background.

4. Take a few test shots to make sure the lighting is right. Add a fan to create movement to the hair. Adjust the fan according to size and speed. This is something that will take some experimenting at first.

5. Finish your shoot and take as many pictures as you can. The best way to get a few great shots is to take many pictures. Touch up any imperfections using your software and print the picture. Present the final product to your client in a frame.

Make A Dance Shirt

Pair your dance shirt with a miniskirt for extra flair.

Dance shirts can be revealing and stylish at the same time, and you don't have to spend a fortune to get them. Choose a T-shirt from your closet that you won't miss, and turn it into something you'll love to show off on the dance floor. You'll just need scissors and some imagination to turn an old T-shirt into a funky blend of 80s punk and modern sleek.

Instructions

1. Select a shirt with interesting color, patterns or fabric. It can have long or short sleeves, and should not be too tight or too short. Do not use shirt with buttons or zippers.

2. Cut off both the sleeves of the shirt to create a tank top; or, for an eye-catching look, cut off only one sleeve. Cut the shirt up the seams on both sides, from the bottom hem up to the armpit. This will open the sides or one side of the shirt completely.

3. Open the shirt and flatten it on a table; it is now only attached at the neck. Cut 2-inch horizontal strips into the left and right sides of the front of the shirt, and repeat on the back of the shirt. This will give it a frayed appearance. If the shirt fits you well, make these strips 2 inches long or less. If the shirt is overly large, cut the strips longer as needed.

4. Tie the shirt back together by tying the strips into knots with those directly across from them, beginning at the bottom of the shirt. This will give the sides of your shirt a braided, but still revealing, look. When you finish, consider cutting the sleeve, if you left one, and making the same ties.

5. Cut a scoop neck in the shirt to reveal more of your neckline and remove any hem. This will make the neckline smoother and sleeker. Begin by cutting only a small semi-circle shape starting from one side of the neck and moving to the other: you can cut more if necessary after you try it on.

Get Waves In Your Hair For Kids

Help your kids get wavy locks without the price of a perm.

If your kids are begging you for the great wavy hair they weren't blessed with, you may think getting them a perm -- or a wave perm -- may be a little too permanent and expensive. Instead, there is a trick that you can do to give your kids the perfect waves they want. And the best part about this homemade wave remedy is that when they take a shower the waves simply wash out.

Instructions

1. Pour warm water into a plastic, clean spray bottle. Fill the bottle to about 3 inches below the rim.

2. Add 3 tbsp. sea salt to the water.

3. Pour 2 tbsp. of olive or coconut oil to the water. Olive and coconut oil are not only for shine, but they will also work to prevent the hair from drying out and keep the hair moisturized.

4. Twist the spray nozzle cap on the bottle and shake.

5. Spray your kid's hair with the sea salt solution until the hair is damp. Use your hands to scrunch the hair, then allow the hair to dry and watch the waves form.

Do Wedding Hairstyles

It is your big day, and of course you want your hair to be perfect. You may choose to do you own wedding hair to save money, or simply because you want to have control over your wedding styling and are comfortable working with hair. It's important to learn do wedding hairstyles before the day of your wedding, and to practice often so your wedding hairstyle is easy to achieve.

Instructions

1. Research wedding hairstyles. Begin your research four to six months before your wedding. Use wedding-related websites or magazines for ideas. Look for models whose face shape is similar to yours to find styles most likely to compliment your face shape. Print or cut out the pictures for reference.

2. Shop for hair accessories that will work with your look and your headpiece. If you decide to wear your hair down in loose curls, consider using pretty pins or headbands. An updo will look pretty with a tiara, broach or silk flower. If you want to use real flowers in your hair, speak to your florist about giving you a few extra flower buds early on the day of your wedding.

3. Practice your wedding hairstyle at least once before your wedding day. Take notes on things that work and don't work, such as where you need an extra bobby pin or how well the curl held.

4. Wash your hair the night before your wedding so that some of the natural oils can build up, which will help the curl hold better. If your hair doesn't hold curl well, wash your hair in the afternoon the day before your wedding to give it a little more time to get "dirty" and lose some of its softness. Your hair should be completely dry when you begin your wedding hairstyle.

5. Curl your hair in sections, starting at the base of the neck. Pin all of your hair up except a section of hair at the bottom of your head. Spray your hair with medium-hold hair spray before curling the next layer. For a curl that is more natural looking, forego the curling iron and pin your hair into loops, called pin curls, when it is wet. Allow the hair to dry completely, then unpin each curl and gently lower the curl, spraying it with medium-hold hair spray before moving to the next.

6. Tease the hair at the roots, especially if you are doing an updo or half updo. Hold small sections of the hair at the crown straight up and tease about 3 inches up the hair shaft. Spray the hair with medium-hold hair spray. When you are pulling the hair back, smooth it back gently with your fingers or a paddle brush.

7. Pull the hair into the style you want, either in a French twist, half updo, glamorous ponytail, or any other style you choose. Finish the hair by spraying it with an extra-hold hair spray.

1. Preheat the CHI curling and flat iron before applying to hair. The CHI flat iron takes only a few minutes to heat. The flat iron temperature can be adjusted from 200 to 392 degrees. The digital setting makes it easy to set the right temperature.

2. Use a heat protectant spray on the hair before curling the hair. A heat protectant spray prevents the hair from being damaged, it adds shine, and curls last much longer. Always apply spray to clean, dry hair.

3. Use the lock-in button to lock the one-inch ceramic plates together to create barrel curls. Section long or short hair into pieces using clips. Wrap the hair around the curling iron. Create barrel curls by sliding the curling iron to the end of the hair. Using the curling iron, roll the hair onto the barrel towards the scalp. Stop rolling once you are near the scalp. Use a comb to protect the scalp from the heat of the curling iron. Hold curling iron in place for a few seconds to let heat penetrate the hair, then carefully unwind hair. Repeat process for the desired sections of hair.

4. Style barrel curls using fingers, or comb. Allow curls to cool before styling hair. Use fingers to comb through hair or use an actual comb. Once hair is fully styled, apply hair spray.

Do An Updo For Medium Length Hair

Create buns, twists and half updos with medium length hair.

Women with hair that's not short or long sometimes experience difficulty in creating their own medium length updo. Since hair is sometimes not long enough to pull back to create long curls or short enough to spike, they might be at a loss in finding a style that works. However, girls with medium length hair can design twisted, curly and smooth updos to fit formal occasions such as weddings, prom, a party or school dance.

Instructions

Messy Bun

1. Create a messy bun for a wedding or prom. Comb or brush hair just enough to remove big tangles.

2. Use thumbs or index fingers to gather hair above the ears into a half ponytail held loosely in one hand. Use the comb or brush to backcomb the underside of this section, giving hair fullness. Lay the section back down and secure all hair back into an elastic ponytail holder. Do not smooth out any hair on top of the head.

3. Curl one-inch sections of hair with the curling iron. Hold each curl for five to ten seconds, just long enough to make a wave or loose curl. Use bobby pins to secure curls around the ponytail, obscuring the elastic piece. Loosen any free ends with fingers to create more fullness and messiness. Spray the style with aerosol hairspray.

Updo Twist

4. Brush all hair to one side of the head. Gather hair in a ponytail and hold it in one hand. Hairspray the back of the hair.

5. Insert hairpins or bobby pins vertically on the ponytail side to hold it in place. It might be necessary to use several bobby pins to fully secure hair. Jason P. Ruel of the Bella Online website recommends placing bobby pins in an "X" formation for better security.

6. Roll the loose hair over the top of the bobby pins, obscuring them from view. Direct the ponytail ends upward toward the top of the head. Use more hairpins to tuck the roll over the existing bobby pins and maintain the style. Hairspray liberally.

7. Curl the remaining ponytail ends on top of the hair. Leave these ends loose or finger them apart for a fluffy style.

Curly Half Updo

8. Design a curly half updo to achieve an elegant look with medium length hair, according to the Bella Online website. Brush hair until smooth. Side part a one- to two-inch section of hair near the forehead to create the illusion of long bangs. Leave this part out in the following steps.

9. Pull hair back into a half ponytail. Gather into an elastic ponytail holder. Alternately, Ruel suggests twisting the half ponytail at the top and using bobby pins to keep it in place.

10. Curl one-inch sections of hair using a one-inch barreled curling iron. Gently brush curls to create a fluffy look.

11. Hairspray the front section of bangs that you side parted in Step One to keep hair out of the eyes. Spray curls in the back of the head in a single sweeping motion.

Hairstyles For Women Over Forty

Women over 40 should choose a hairstyle that suits professional and personal life.

Choosing a hairstyle is sometimes a difficult task for a woman, of any age. Those over 40 want to wear a youthful style without looking too young. While women in this age group might not be as daring as women in their teens and 20s, there are still many options for short, medium and long hairstyles for women over 40. Before deciding on a style, consult with a professional hairstylist for the appropriate look.

Considerations

It is important to do some research on different and popular hairstyles. Many people look to celebrities for inspiration because they are often photographed. When choosing a hairstyle, consider the shape of your face and the texture of your hair. Certain styles don't always look great on all face shapes. Also take into account the amount of maintenance required to keep the hairstyle looking its best. Busy women don't have a lot of time each day to dedicate to a hairstyle that requires curling or straightening. If a color treatment is used, choose a shade that matches your skin tone.

Longer Styles

Longer hairstyles are often age appropriate for women over 40. Taller people generally wear longer styles better than shorter people. Long styles can be worn many different ways for everyday activities and special occasions. Adding layers to a long cut adds more dimension and frames the face. Long styles require more upkeep than shorter styles. It takes longer to wash, dry and style long hair.

Medium to Short

A popular trend among women in this age group is to choose a medium or shorter length style. These lengths are generally around the shoulders and shorter. Medium styles tend to suit people of most face shapes and sizes. A variety of hair textures can be cut to a medium length and styled nicely. Shorter cuts might not work with all face shapes, but they generally require the least maintenance. These lengths provide fewer options than long hair for different styles, such as up-dos, for special occasions.

Caution

While everyone is an individual, some hairstyles are not considered age appropriate for women over 40. Certain hairstyles make a women look much older or younger than she really is. Hair color is another important factor that can be overlooked. Choosing an extreme color that is not your natural color, such as platinum blonde, black, or red, may not be a good choice. Some colors paired with an inappropriate cut can be considered unprofessional in the workplace, depending on your job.

Hairstyles For Women At Age 40

Hairstyles For Women at Age 40

In previous decades, once a woman reached age 40, she was expected to give up on youthful hairstyles and adopt a more mature look. In addition, many women deal with hair that is thinning in addition to turning gray. WebMD advises mature women to try volumizing shampoos and lightweight conditioners to restore fullness to their hair. Since hair color swells the hair shaft, covering gray hair can also make hair appear thicker in addition to taking years off a woman's appearance. The right hairstyle also enhances the mature good looks of women over 40.

Optimum Hair Length

Although the prevailing wisdom used to state that women over 40 should cut their hair short, most women actually look best with a hairstyle that ranges in length from chin length to touching their collarbones, according to hairstylist Gretchen Monahan. The website for More magazine, which is targeted for women over 40, features a range of 15 different hairstyles, the majority of them for medium length hair or longer. First Lady Michelle Obama and Academy Award-winning actress Marcia Gay Harden are among the famous women who wear their hair at this length.

Short Hair Styles

Many mature women still prefer shorter hair, and the right haircut can look youthful rather than masculine. One of the short hairstyles featured in More magazine was a short, cropped style, which is ideal for straight hair as well as for curly or kinky hair. It is especially flattering for women with excellent bone structure and striking facial features, such as actresses Halle Berry or Jamie Lee Curtis. Another short hair option is a layered bob, a style more suitable to straight or wavy rather than very curly hair.

Long Hair Styles

Many mature women put convention aside and maintain their long hair. If hair is shiny and well maintained, long hair can add a youthful flair for a woman over 40. Long hair is suitable for straight or curly hair, and can be especially flattering when face-framing layers are integrated into the hairstyle. However, hair that is dull, with no shape or shine, can drag down a woman's features and emphasize lines and wrinkles. Actress Teri Hatcher wore short hair for much of her career but adopted longer hair after age 40. Actresses Jane Seymour, Salma Hayek and Lucy Liu have maintained their trademark long hair for their entire careers.

Shave A Head Bald

Don't be intimidated by shaving your head for the first time.

Many men choose to shave their heads, either to deal with a balding hairline or simply for the aesthetic appeal. The task of shaving your head for the first time might seem daunting, but it is manageable. The important thing is to take your time in order to prevent razor cuts. With the proper care, you will have a smooth head in no time.

Instructions

1. Trim your hair down to stubble with hair clippers. The shorter the remaining hair, the easier your head will be to shave.

2. Take a hot shower to soften the hair.

3. Apply shaving oil, cream or gel to your head. Work it into a lather and massage it in.

4. Begin shaving your head, beginning with the sides and forehead. Use a brand new razor and shave in the direction of the hair growth. Rinse the blade frequently to reduce the chance of being cut.

5. Move to the back of your head, starting at the neck and working your way up. Use a mirror to help you, and continue to shave in the direction of the hair growth.

6. Shave the coarse hair at the crown of your head last to give the lather time to soak in thoroughly.

7. Re-lather your head and shave it again, this time going against the direction of hair growth for the closest possible shave.

8. Rinse excess lather from your head and apply astringent and lotion to your skin. This will minimize irritation.

Get The Stink Out Of Leather Sandals

Get the stink out of leather sandals with certain solutions.

Excessive sweating or getting your leather sandals wet can cause bacteria and fungus to grow, creating stinky odors. Shoe odor is not a serious problem, but it may be embarrassing when other people can smell it. Regularly cleaning your feet and having proper personal hygiene may prevent odors in your leather sandals, but will not remove remaining odors. Cleaning the leather sandals with certain solutions will get the stink out of the sandals, while killing bacteria and fungus.

Instructions

1. Fill two old, clean socks with baking soda. Tie off the openings of the socks to prevent the baking soda from leaking out.

2. Insert the socks filled with baking soda into the leather sandals to absorb the odors. Place fabric softener sheets inside the leather sandals to absorb moisture.

3. Allow the socks and fabric softeners to remain in the sandals overnight. In the morning, inspect the sandals for remaining odors.

4. Sprinkle 3 tbsp. of baking soda into each leather sandal, if odors remain. Allow the baking soda to remain inside the sandals overnight.

5. Pour the baking soda out of the shoes in the morning. Spray a foot antiperspirant inside the leather sandals before wearing them.

Make Perfume Using Flowers

The essence of fresh flowers can make a wonderful perfume.

Every woman has her own special scent. Realizing that all perfumes interact with each individual body chemistry is just a part of the battle women wage when trying to find that unique fragrance. With most manufactured perfumes containing chemicals, there has to be a more natural way of finding that specific perfume. There is. Make it yourself from your favorite flowers. While more complex combinations will take experimentation, a simple one tone scent is easy to relatively easy to make. Here's just one way how.

Instructions

1. Pick your flowers early in the morning, while the dew is prevalent. Try to get them as close to the time they first open as possible as the flowers will be at their peak at this time. Choosing a flower with a strong scent works best. However, the more subtle fragranced blooms will work as well. You will simply need to complete the process more than once using the same water.

2. Immediately after picking, lightly chop your flowers - you will need about 2 cups. Place them in 4 cups of spring or distilled water that has been poured into a glass bowl. The water should completely cover the flowers. Place a cover on the bowl and let the mixture sit overnight.

3. Strain the water and flowers through the cheesecloth, removing all plant material. If you are using a lightly scented bloom, do step 2 again, using the same water and cutting another batch of fresh flowers. Once you have completed this step, place scented water into stainless steel pot and allow to simmer, reducing to approximately 2 tablespoons of concentrated scent.

4. Place 5 tablespoons of vodka into small dark colored glass bottle. Add the 2 tablespoons of scent to the bottle. Plug in the stopper and then shake gently. Allow to sit for 72 hours before trying. If the scent is too strong, add additional tablespoons of water, one at a time. Mix the water and allow to rest 24 hours before adding additional water.

Relax Hair When It'S Textured

When it comes to making highly textured hair more manageable and easy to comb through, relaxers and texturizers are often used. Chemically, there is no difference between a relaxer and a texturizer; what makes them different is how they're used. Women who want to relax hair that's previously been texturized need to know what to expect for the most satisfactory results.

Types

Relaxers and texturizers straighten or soften the curl of highly textured hair, typically that of women of African descent. Relaxers are generally used to completely straighten the hair, while texturizers are used to gently soften the curl without removing it completely. These products contain the same active ingredients of either sodium hydroxide (lye relaxers) or calcium hydroxide (no-lye relaxers).

Time Frame

For complete straightening, or relaxing, the relaxer is left on the hair for about 20 minutes. To texturize, or soften the curl, texturizers are usually left on the hair no more than 10 minutes.

The effects of relaxers and texturizers are permanent. You can apply a relaxer to a head of hair that has previously been texturized, but only on the new growth at the roots. You can't put a relaxer onto textured hair. Typically, relaxers and texturizers are retouched every eight weeks. At this point, a person would have about 1 inch of new growth to apply the chemicals to.

Effects

If you apply a relaxer to hair that has already been treated with texturizing chemicals, you will over-process it and weaken it more than it already is. This leads to breakage, dryness and damage.

Applying a relaxer to new growth at the roots will straighten that area of the hair. If the rest of the hair has been texturized, all except the new growth will be slightly curly or wavy. To blend the textures together, you may need to flat iron the hair. For the best, most uniform results, continue texturizing instead of relaxing, or cut the textured hair off and begin relaxing your hair.

Benefits

Women who use relaxers or texturizers usually like the manageability that the chemical treatments provide. These chemicals straighten Afro-textured hair, making it easier to comb through and more willing to stay straight without reverting in humid temperatures (which happens with temporary processes such as hot combing or flat ironing). A woman with relaxed or texturized hair can swim without worrying that her hair will go back to being in its natural, curly state.

Warning

Both relaxers and texturizers break down the hair's bonds, leading to damage that isn't visible to the naked eye. The longer you leave the chemicals on, the more severe the damage is. Consult with a licensed stylist to get the best results, if you want to apply different chemicals to your hair.

Types Of Wavy Hair For Guys

Types of Wavy Hair for Guys

Although many people associate hairstyling as a women's game, many men also visit barbers and hairstylists on a regular basis to ensure they are looking their best. Men's hairstyles come in several different styles, lengths and types. As many men possess naturally wavy hair, several styles have evolved for this hair type, no matter the length.

Layered Hair

One of the most common ways for stylists to trim up and style men's hair-while getting rid of split ends and damaged hair-involves layering men's hair. Layering involves cutting the hair in slightly different lengths in several sections, which allows it to maintain a textured style. Layered styles usually feature medium to long lengths and can be worn naturally-usually parted in the middle or on the side-as well as with gels and pomades.

Tapered Hair

Very similar to layered hair is tapered-style hair. This style provides a classy, stylish and conservative look. This style normally calls for longer hair on the top with the sides and back cut short and tapered. The top hair can take several forms-gelled or left natural, depending upon the person's preference.

Short Gelled Hair

Many men with very short wavy hair have several options at hand; one of the most common is to gel short hair. This short gelled look works for hair ranging from 1/2 inch long to a couple of inches long. Although usually reserved for the below-35 crowd, the gelled look allows for quick and easy styling, only taking a couple of minutes. The hair is usually left scattered in a messy fashion, or combed forward with the fingers.

Longer Frontal Hair

Though hair loss can prove difficult to hide once it reaches a certain threshold, the beginning stages can often be hidden quite well. One of the most common methods involves maintaining medium-length hair but having the stylist or barber cut the front slightly longer than the rest. Maintaining longer frontal hair allows the added length and fullness of wavy hair to create the illusion of more hair, lessening the attention brought to your receding or thinning hair.

Cut & Style Wigs

Wigs can be customized to better enhance your features and reflect your personal style.

Although wigs are designed with a basic style, you can achieve variations through limitless cuts and styles. Add volume and height with simple teasing and smoothing. In moments, you can transform your wig from its basic style to make the wig uniquely your own.

Instructions

1. Seek out a professional hairstylist to cut and shape your wig. Consult with the stylist to trim bangs and remove excess bulk hair. Place the wig on your head so that the cut better enhances your features.

2. Place a wig securely on a wig stand. Add gel or mouse to the wig. Brush the wig lightly from the ends and gradually work your way toward the roots.

3. Add rollers or pin curls to the wig to enhance volume. Gather a small portion of the hair, wind the roller upwards and smooth the hair ends as you go.

4. Circulate cool to medium heat in an even, continuous manner with a blow dryer. Position the dryer approximately a foot away from the wig to avoid overheating. Allow the hair to cool before removing the pin curls or rollers. Tease the hair lightly with a comb to obtain the desired style.

Get Rid Of A Perm For African American Hair

Extensions are one way to ease your transition.

The harsh chemicals used for a perm can cause African American hair to become brittle and dry; stress and heat used to style permed hair can also be damaging. If you're fed up with your perm and have decided to embrace your natural hair texture, follow a few tips to ensure a smooth transition. If you're still aren't sure style kinky curls growing underneath straight tresses, remember you can always rock a wig in the meantime.

Instructions

1. Stop putting chemicals in your hair. The transition phase can be difficult for African American women growing out their natural hair. The natural texture coming through at the roots looks drastically different from permed hair, and you may be tempted to perm your edges so your hair will lay down neatly. Resist the temptation so that your natural hair will be an even length all around. Stay away from products that promise to strip the perm from your hair and return it to its natural texture; putting any additional chemicals on top of your perm will weaken your hair and potentially cause it to break off.

2. Stop putting heat on your hair. Pressing, blow drying or flat ironing your hair while growing out your perm can strip moisture from your hair and cause further damage. Let your hair air dry after washing and conditioning.

3. Decide if you're going to cut your perm out or grow it out. Investigate the options related to either choice. If you cut your perm out, make sure you're comfortable with wearing your hair very short and natural. As it grows, your hair styling options will grow as well, including twists, corn rows, extensions or a simple afro. If you grow your perm out, research transitional styles that camouflage your two textures of hair. Suggestions include corn rows, extensions, a straw set (setting your hair with very small rollers) or wearing it crinkly (braiding or twisting your hair and taking it down without combing it out). Gradually clip off a bit of permed hair every six weeks.

4. Wash and deep condition your hair, leaving it in for 20 to 30 minutes, at least once per week. Allow your hair to air dry to seal the moisture in.

Easily And Quickly Get Tight Curls With Ceramic Rollers

Use ceramic rollers to make tight curls for any occasion.

Using ceramic rollers properly can give you beautiful and smooth curls that are perfect for any occasion. Ceramic rollers evenly distribute heat on the hair, which makes the hair perfectly curled and causes minimum damage. They also reduce frizz so your curls are silky smooth. It can be difficult to use ceramic rollers to get tight curls, but with a few extra steps and products, you can quickly and easily create them.

Instructions

1. Wash your hair as you normally would. This removes any previous products and excess oil, making your hair easier to work with and style.

2. Brush your hair and let it dry for about five minutes so it isn't soaking wet. Use a towel to get excess water out.

3. Turn on your ceramic rollers. They only work properly if they are heated for about 20 minutes before application.

4. Spray a blob of mousse into your hand. For thin hair, a blob of mousse the size of a golf ball is enough. For long hair, use a blob of mousse about the size of a baseball. Brush it into your hair and let it dry. This helps your curls stay tight.

5. Separate your hair into two sections. Place the end of your pin tail comb on top of your ear. Bring the comb around through the hair until it reaches the other ear. Simultaneously grab a hold of the hair that you separate. Brush the hair in your hand and secure it on the top of your head with a hair clip.

6. Take a small section of hair from the bottom half. Brush it and get any knots and tangles out. Spray a full line of hairspray on this section. Carefully place the end of the hair onto the rollers vertically. Wind up the hair onto the roller until the roller is touching your scalp. Most ceramic rollers come with pins to secure the hair, but you can use a bobby pin if yours didn't.

7. Repeat Step 6 for all of the hair on the bottom half of your head. Once you're done, repeat for the hair you secured on the top of your head. Then, spray a little bit of hairspray on your head and leave the rollers in for 10 to 15 minutes, or until they have cooled.

8. Focus your attention on one roller close to the bottom of your head. Remove the pins that secure the hair and slowly pull out the roller in a downward direction. Work your way up and repeat for all of the rollers.

9. Spray your hair with hairspray to make the curls stay intact.

Sharpen Oster Clipper Blades

Give the perfect cut everytime with sharpened clipper blades.

Oster scissors, or clippers, are mainly used as grooming shears. When sharpened properly, the blades can last a very long time. The water from wet hair and the alcohol from the cleaning solution can dull the blades of the clippers. To prevent dulling and ensure a clean cut every time, the blades need to be sharpened on a regular basis.

Instructions

1. Fill a large pot with light machine oil. Soak your sharpening stone in the oil overnight. Doing this will lubricate the stone, making sharpening quicker and easier.

2. Hold the scissors open in your dominant hand. Grasp onto the pivot of the clippers (where the two blades intersect), and position the first blade to be sharpened pointing down and resting on a hard surface. Hold onto the sharpening stone with your non-dominant hand.

3. Place the sharpening stone at the pivot of the blades. Using a smooth, straight motion, slide the stone from the pivot to the point of the blade. You do not need to apply a lot of pressure. Repeat the motion several times, keeping count of how many times the stone crosses the blade.

4. Turn the clippers around so that the second blade's point is facing downward resting on a hard surface. Repeat Step 3 with the second blade. Ensure that you slide the stone across the blade the same amount of repetitions as the first blade.

5. Open and close the scissors quickly as if cutting something. This will help knock off any shavings or burrs left on the blades. Wipe down each blade with a paper towel to clean off any oil that may remain on the blades.

Make A Silk Flower Arrangement Around A Hurricane Globe

Floral wreaths create festive displays around hurricane globes.

Hurricane globes make beautiful centerpieces on dining tables for special occasions. You can dress up the globe by adding a silk floral arrangement around the glass. A circular wreath base is a popular choice for these arrangements, because it is the same shape as the hurricane globe. Because the wreath sits around the globe without attaching, you can make different wreaths for a variety of occasions using different colors and types of flowers and greenery.

Instructions

1. Cut the stems from each of the flower blooms and greenery. Leave approximately 2 to 3 inches of stem so that you can secure the flowers and leaves to the base. The stem should not be so long that it sticks out of the back of the grapevine wreath base. Test each stem when you cut it and trim, if necessary.

2. Glue each flower bloom to the wreath base. Place hot glue on the stem and insert it into the grapevine wreath. First, make a ring of flowers in the center of the wreath with the largest blooms. Then, use smaller blooms along the sides, slightly offset from the larger flowers. You can place the flowers side by side or space them approximately an inch apart, if you prefer more greenery in your wreath.

3. Fill the open spaces in the wreath with greenery. The grapevine wreath provides a rustic look, so it is not necessary to cover the base completely unless you want a full look. Glue each stem in place as you fill the wreath.

4. Glue a ribbon bow onto one side of the wreath. Allow the wreath to dry completely. Choose a ribbon color that coordinates with the silk flowers.

5. Place the hurricane globe and candle in the center of the wreath.

Make Arabic Wax For Hair Removal

Some women in Middle Eastern countries still make Arabic wax as an all-natural hair remover. Since ancient Egyptian times, women used sugar waxing as part of their beauty regimen. Today, there are many products used for hair removal. However, some of these products can contain harsh chemicals. For people who may prefer to use natural ingredients, an Arabic wax may be an option. With some simple ingredients, you can make a sugar wax at home.

Instructions

1. Combine 2 cups of sugar, and 4 tbsp. each of lemon juice and water in a saucepan. Simmer the ingredients in the saucepan over low heat.

2. Allow the mixture to thicken and turn golden brown. Stir the mixture with a spoon consistently so that the sugar crystals dissolve. It may take between four and eight minutes for the mixture to thicken and acquire a syrup-like consistency. Do not allow the mixture to boil over or burn.

3. Wait until the mixture turns a darker brown. Lower the heat and check the mixture's temperature with a candy thermometer. The temperature should be approximately between 250 and 270 degrees F.

4. Turn off the heat and let the mixture cool for two to three minutes. Pour the mixture into a microwaveable container and allow it to cool. Test the mixture with the fingers for consistency and heat level before applying it to the skin. If the mixture is too cool, then you can reheat it in the microwave.

5. Prepare a quick sugaring wax in the microwave. Combine the sugar, 4 tbsp. of honey and lemon juice with a spoon in a microwaveable container.

6. Microwave the mixture at medium heat for approximately two minutes. Remove the sugaring mixture from the microwave and allow it to cool. Proceed to use the Arabic wax.

Hairstyles For Short Curly Hair For Women

Don't be afraid to let your hair dry naturally.

There are two keys to beautiful short curls. Keep the hair moisturized with weekly deep-conditioning treatments, which will cut down on frizz. Ask your hairstylist to cut layers into your hair, which will keep your curls from getting weighed down and will also keep your hair from taking on the dreaded triangular shape many curly headed women fear. Curly hair can be beautiful when it's left down, but don't feel limited by having short hair. There are plenty of styling options for this kind of hair.

Flower Power

Make a side part in your hair. Use a flat brush to flatten out the curls a little and make them more wavy. Tuck a flower--either fake or real will work--behind your ear on the side with the part. Use a bobby pin to secure the flower. Add some red lipstick for a romantic, old-Hollywood look.

Add a Headband

Use curl-enhancing lotion to give your curls extra definition. Pull a few ringlets forward next to your face. Place a headband on the crown of your head, a few inches back from your hairline. The headband will be partially blocked by the volume of your hair, so choose a sparkly headband that will stand out. Use a curling iron to define the curls that frame your face.

Bob It

This style will trick people into thinking your hair is longer than it is, and looks polished enough for formal events. Roll the curls at the back of your hair under and secure them at the nape of your neck with bobby pins. Allow the pieces at the front to fall forward next to your face. Don't worry about making it look perfect. This style looks best when it's a little messy.

Build the Height

Use a curling iron to define the curls on the top of your head. Lift these curls and use a comb to tease the underside to build volume. Pull back the hair on the sides of your head. If your hair is extra curly, wet this hair first and slick it back with a comb. Hold the slicked hair with hairspray, then twist the curly hair on the top of your head into a bun. Secure the bun with bobby pins.

Go Natural

Don't be afraid of a natural look. Remember that are plenty of women with stick-straight hair who would love to have your curls. Let your hair go fully natural or style it into a wild, flower-child look. After getting out of the shower, apply curl-enhancing lotion and let your hair air dry. Once it's dry, run your finger through your hair, separating the curls. Flip your head upside-down to give the hair extra volume. Finish the look off with some volumizing spray to keep your hair looking wild and bold all day long.

Is Eyelash Perming Safe

Is Eyelash Perming Safe?

Women who are tired of mascara and eyelash curlers may be considering an eyelash perm. Eyelash perming is a semi-permanent solution to flat, lifeless lashes. There are some concerns about the risks of the procedure, however, so before you sign up for an eyelash perm, make sure you understand the risk you are taking.

Function

The procedure begins with your lashes being cleaned and dried. Then a small piece of adhesive cotton is placed along the lower lash line. A perming rod is glued to your eyelid, and your lashes are combed and curled over the rod. Once they are in place, a diluted perm solution is placed on them. You will wait, with your eyes closed, until the solution has done its job. The perming rod is removed and the lashes are washed to remove the solution and glue, giving you a beautiful curl to your eyelashes.

Significance

Because of the strong nature of perming chemicals, many wonder whether eyelash perming is safe. The FDA has not yet granted approval to the products used to perm eyelashes, even though there have been few documented cases of severe injury after an eyelash perm. The FDA still feels that placing perming solution near the eyes poses a danger to someone undergoing an eyelash perm. However, this risk is not yet strong enough for the FDA to pull the product from the market, and since FDA approval is not required for cosmetic products, eyelash perming is readily available.

Time Frame

A typical eyelash perming procedure takes 45 minutes to 1 hour. During that time the customer must keep his or her eyes closed to avoid any potential damage caused by perming solution leaking into the eyes. A gentle adhesive forces the eyes to remain shut. The results can last up to four months, but most customers report that their results last for closer to five weeks. Once the eyelashes all fall or grow out, the procedure's results will no longer be visible.

Warning

It is possible to purchase eyelash perming kits online. However, you should not try to do this procedure at home. While there does not appear to be a high level of danger associated with professional eyelash perming, doing the procedure yourself increases any risk significantly. Besides the risk of harming your eyes with the perming solution, you also have the risk of causing your eyelashes to fall out, curling them too tightly, or missing some of your lashes and creating a lopsided look. If you are going to have your lashes permed, let the professionals do it for you.

Considerations

So is it safe to have your eyelashes permed? No official decision has been made. Thousands of men and women have had their eyelashes permed with no apparent damage other than slight discomfort after the procedure, so many salon professionals feel it is safe. The FDA is not yet sure, and until FDA approval is granted, there will be a question of the safety of the procedure. If you are considering an eyelash perm, have it done at a reputable salon or spa so that you can feel confident with the results.

Different Perm Rolls

Different perm rods impart different curl types.

Perms had their heyday in the 1980s, when tight poodle curls defined the era and home-perm kits graced drugstore shelves. But the permanent wave has undergone a metamorphosis since then, with new perm rods and rolling techniques that create looser, softer curls. Whether you want ringlets or a body wave, your hairdresser can help you get them with the right perm roll.

Perm Rods

The rollers used to create a perm are called perm rods. Whether you get loose or tight curls depends on the size of rod you use and the number of times your stylist wraps your hair around the rod. Perm rods are color-coded, with red being the smallest and purple being the largest. Stylists use red rods for tight curls in short hair. Purple rods are generally used for body waves, or loose curls in long hair. The standard, all-purpose perm rod is gray, which creates tight curls in hair between 3 to 5 inches in length.

Rolling Technique

In a traditional perm roll, known as a croquignole wrap, the stylist wraps the client's hair around a standard rod in layers, rolling from the tips to the roots. Spiral perms, which create ringlets in long hair, require a different rolling technique. The stylist wraps the hair around a corkscrew- or boomerang-shaped rod, never allowing the hair to overlap. While it is possible to do a spiral perm with a standard rod, it's not ideal, as standard rods aren't long enough.

Other Perm Rolls

If your goal in perming your hair is to create volume rather than defined curls; body waves and root perms, which use large rods and fewer wraps, are your best options. For an uneven curl pattern that looks more natural, try a spot perm, in which the stylist rolls only a few sections of hair around the rods. Stacked perms and multi-textured perms use multiple rod sizes to create a layered look.

Piggyback Perm Roll

Croquignole wraps use only one perm rod per curl, and the rollers go from the crown to the nape in rows that look like ladders. When doing a spiral perm with traditional rods or perming very long hair, the stylist might use a technique called the piggyback roll, which requires two rods. The first wrap goes in a corkscrew pattern from the root to the middle of the hair length; the second goes from the middle to the ends in using croquignole technique. The goal in piggybacking perm rods is to create a consistent curl pattern down the length of the hair.

Fairytale Wedding Hairstyles

A special fairytale bridal hairstyle reminiscent of Cinderella.

When you think about a fairytale wedding, the first image that comes to mind is the bride. A fairytale bride may be styled after a variety of maidens or princesses from story book lore, like Cinderella or Beauty and the Beast's Belle. These days, Disney even hosts fairytale weddings, which include fairytale bridal styling. There are a handful of fairytale wedding hairstyles that will ensure that the bride looks like the perfect fairytale princess on her big day.

The Cinderella Updo

Cinderella's fairytale hairstyle has been a classic for years. When she arrived at the ball transformed, her simple updo accessorized with her beaded head band, brides everywhere wanted to mimic her. To create this look, sweep hair up into a simple updo. The length of your hair will determine how many pins you will need. When the updo is in place, attach a beaded or pearl studded headband to complete the Cinderella look.

The Giselle Curls

Giselle, the star of the break out Disney hit Enchanted, has long, curly flowing hair that many brides would kill for. It's not hard to get the Giselle fairytale hairstyle for your wedding day. The look can be achieved with hair that is at least shoulder length or longer. Divide the hair into sections when it is wet and twist it round and round until it reaches the scalp. Then pin the hair until it is dry. When the tight twisted balls are let down, you will have long curly locks, just like Giselle.

The Belle Half up Half Down 'Do

To be a fairytale bride like Belle in Beauty and the Beast, it requires long hair and a combination of a stylized bun that sits on top of the head along with long flowing locks that hang below. The style has been extremely popular for fairytale brides because the separation allows for a perfect place to pin the veil. To get the look, take a section of hair from the top of the head and sweep it into a small bun. Allow all the remaining hair to hang down. If your hair is straight, you might want to use a curling iron or pin curlers to get wavy curls. A veil can easily be attached around the bun, or fairytale bride flowers, ribbons or other accessories can be added.

Hairstyles For Prom For Black Women

An updo is an elegant prom hairstyle for black women.

Getting ready for the prom is a time that girls and women love. The focus is often on the dress, hair and makeup for the evening. Black women have different hair concerns in terms of styling than do other women because black hair tends to be more curly and coarse than the hair of other races. Of course, many black women choose to use a relaxer to straighten their hair or a flat iron for more versatility.

Bob

A sleek bob, adorned with a colorful accessory, is a lovely look for prom for black women. The bob should be fairly short, around chin length, with soft layers and side-swept bangs. Even if the hair is fairly straight and relaxed, you will want to run a flat-iron over it to make it pin-straight and smooth. Use a styling cream to put the bangs in place. Add a clip with a flower or rhinestones on it and pin up one side of the hair.

Low Bun

For black women with longer hair, an elegant, low bun is an option for the prom. It's an option for curly or wavy hair, as well as straight hair. If you would like a smoother look, flat-iron the hair first or blow-dry it using a large, round brush. If the hair is wavy, smooth it back but allow loose tendrils to hang out around your face. Use a curling iron to create curls in the tendrils.

Updo

An updo is another option for black women with hair that is at least shoulder-length. The hair is swept back and held with decorative clips and bobby pins. Use a shine serum to control any baby hairs or frizz. The updo looks lovely with angled, side-swept bangs. Use pomade to hold them in place. To add interest, add a decorative headband to the hair.
