Short Hairdos With Perms

Short Hairdos With Perms

When working with short hair with a perm, options can seem limited. A short curly look doesn't have the amount of versatility of longer hair, but there are still many looks one can achieve. Perms can create varied types of curls from tight ringlets to gentle waves. Aside from curl types, there are many modern and sleek short cuts that require less daily style time than longer dos.

Perm Types

A perm, short for permanent, is a process done to the hair using heat and chemicals to create waves or curls in the hair. Stylists can adjust the tightness of the curl with the amount of solution. They can also customize the size of the curl with different size rods from small to very large curls. A perm can create looks ranging from traditional round curls to spiral curls to soft gentle waves.

Curly Bobbed Cuts

A one length bob is a classic perm look. The bobbed hair can hit anywhere from ear level and below to as long as above the shoulder. This type of cut can be carried off with any type of curl. A layered bob is another look that works well with hair with a perm. At its longest part, this cut can hit from above the shoulder to ear length. Where this differs from the one length bob is that the hair is textured with layers framing the face in a shag type look. The layers can be cut throughout the hair as well with typically the longest length towards the back of the head. Both of these cuts work well with waves, creating a romantic look reminiscent of a flapper. Tight curls work well here as well, creating a traditional premed look.

Even Shorter Short looks

The ultimate low maintenance short curly cut is cut extremely short and cropped to the head - so short the hair stands on its own. This look requires little maintenance. Going a bit longer you can opt for a curly pixie cut. This cut typically is cut very close to the head and is shorter up front and longer towards the back. This look, sometimes worn by Halle Berry. can be worn with or without bangs and the bangs can be left straight or curly. Another very short cut that works with a perm is a mushroom cut. This is a very short cut that hits above the ear and is one length around the entire head. This cut can also be worn with or without bangs.

Style Tips

Hair with a perm of most lengths can be straightened. Using a straightening iron or hair dryer, cuts with even minimal length can be straightened rather quickly. If the entire head has a perm, these tools can be used to create straight bangs. Using a diffuser can ramp up the curls and gels can eliminate frizz and create more defined ringlets. Gel can also be used to create a modern sleeked back look for any hair style. Headbands often look cute with curly bobs, pixie cuts or mushroom cuts. Barrettes and clips also create a new twist on a short look. Bangs can be clipped back easily for a new look. If your cut has a part, switching from a center part to side part is easy and quickly updates a cut.
